Thirteen
Jenny folded the newspaper she was reading and stepped out of the Impala, rounding it to catch up to Sam and Dean.
"I found a case." Jenny mused, smiling partially. "A girl was supposedly kidnapped by a cult."
"Doesn't sound like our kind of gig." Dean frowned as Jenny shrugged.
"Does the girl have a name?" Sam asked as Jenny read the paper again.
"Katie Holmes." A crash from inside the roadhouse caught the threes attention, all quickly walking in to find Ellen and Jo yelling at one another.
"I am your mother, I don't have to be reasonable!" Ellen yelled at Jo, who looked as furious as her mother.
"You can't keep me here!"
"Oh, don't you bet on that, sweetie." Jenny and Dean shared an awkward look, slowly turning their heads to Sam, who looked at them with the same expression.
"What are you going to do, are you going to chain me up in the basement?"
"You know what, you've had worse ideas than that recently. Hey, you don't wanna stay, don't stay. Go back to school."
"I didn't belong there! I was a freak with a knife collection." Jenny inhaled quietly, remembering her very short few years of high school.
"Yeah, and getting yourself killed on some dusty back road, that's where you belong?!" Ellen shook her head, spotting the three standing awkwardly. "Guys, bad time."
"Yes, ma'am." Jenny and Sam spoke quickly and in sync. Dean laughed awkwardly.
"Yeah, we rarely drink before ten anyway."
"Wait. I wanna know what they think about this." Jenny's eyes widened nervously, clasping her hands together.
"I don't care what they think!" Ellen yelled as a small family walked into the roadhouse, all blinding Jenny with their brightly colored, matching t-shirts.
"Are you guys open?" The father asked, Ellen and Jo turning to him.
"No!"
"Yes!" The two children looked petrified, the mothers eyes widening as the father slowly stepped back.
"We'll just... check out the Arby's down the road." The four quickly rushed out as the phone rang. Ellen stalked over to the phone as Sam, Dean and Jenny cautiously made their way to a table.
"Harvelle's. Yeah, Preacher." Jo rushed over to the table the three hunters were sitting at, dropping a folder in the table.
"Three weeks ago a young girl disappears from a Philadelphia apartment." She slid the folder to Jenny, who didn't take it. "Take it, it won't bite."
Jenny glanced over to Ellen, who had her back turned in the four. "No, but your mom might." Dean shuddered a breath. Jo pinched her lips, still holding the folder out to Jenny, who slowly took it.
"If your mom kills me, don't touch my bones because I'm coming back to haunt you, Jo." Jenny glared at Jo, who waved her hand away.
"This girl wasn't the first. Over the past eighty years, six women have vanished. All from the same building, all young blondes. Only happens every decade or two so cops never eyeball the pattern. So we're either dealing with one very old serial killer, or—"
"Who put this together? Ash?" Dean interrupted as Jo plopped down, frowning.
"I did it myself." Jenny hummed, impressed by how put together the folder was for someone who had never been in a hunt.
"I gotta admit. We hit the road for a lot less." Sam shrugged as Ellen walked over, causing Jenny to jump out of her skin and toss the folder at Dean.
"Good. You like the case so much, you take it." She suggested, Jo's mouth dropping to the ground.
"Mom!"
"Joanna Beth, this family has lost enough. And I won't lose you too. I just won't." Ellen stood for a minute before walking away, Jo growing agitated and dashing off.
Jenny slowly turned to Dean, gesturing to where Ellen just was. "Now, I'm not really scared of a lot of things... But she terrifies me."
...
"I feel kinda bad for snagging Jo's case." Sam spoke solemnly as he, Jenny and Dean walked into the apartment of the missing woman.
"Yeah, me too. Wish we took my case instead." Jenny grumbled, crossing her arms as she looked around the apartment.
"Yeah, maybe she put together a good file. But could you see her out here working one of these things? I don't think so." Dean commented and Jenny nodded in agreement. Even while she thought Jo had potential, she didn't think taking her on a case was a good idea.
Sam pulled out an EMF, walking around with it. "You getting anything?" Dean asked his brother, who shook his head.
Jenny paused as something squelched beneath her boots and she grimaced, squinting her eyes shut for a moment. She looked down, lifting her boot up to reveal a black goo stuck to her shoe.
"What's that?" Sam asked, walking towards Jenny as Dean joined. She knelt down, examining the goo.
"Oh shit." She mumbled, looking up to the two. "It's ectoplasm." Dean looked away with slight annoyance as Jenny grabbed a tissue from a nearby table, wiping her hand down.
"Well, I think I know what we're dealing with here. It's the Stay-Puff Marshmallow Man." Dean joked, his brother rolling his eyes.
"Does this mean I can make a s'more? Haven't done that in a while." Jenny asked, frowning when the tissue ripped apart. "Dammit."
"Guys, I've only seen this stuff, like, twice. I mean, to make this stuff you have to be one majorly pissed off spirit." Sam explained, gesturing to the light-switch. "It's over there, too."
"All right, let's find this badass before he snags any more girls." Jenny paused, staring at her hands for a moment before glancing up at Dean.
"I hope this ghost has preferences. Blondes, right?" Sam and Dean looked at her and nodded, the three leaving the apartment.
As the three walked down the hallway, Jenny was suddenly yanked back behind the wall by Dean, who pressed a finger to his lips. She frowned at him in confusion, peeking behind the wall to see the landlord and Jo talking. Jenny's eyes widened in shock.
"Oh boy." Jenny, Sam and Dean all walked towards Jo and the landlord, Jo's eyes widening for a moment before attempting to act normal.
"Jo, hey. What are you doing here?" Jenny asked through a clenched smile, looking to the landlord.
"There you guys are." Jo smiled, looking to the man. "This is my sister, Jennifer. That's her boyfriend, Dean and their buddy, Sam."
"Quite a sister you got here." The landlord smiled as Jenny hummed, throwing her arm over Jo's shoulder and squeezed her arm tightly.
"Yep. She sure is a kickstarter." Jo grimaced under Jenny's grip.
"So, did you already check out that apartment? The one for rent." Jo asked as Dean and Jenny nodded.
"Yeah. Yes. Loved it. Heh. Great flow." Dean laughed awkwardly as Jenny moved to stand next to Dean.
"Really spacious." She chimed in, Dean's arm snaking around her waist. The landlord, Ed, frowned in confusion.
"How'd you get in?" Dean and Jenny's were quiet for a moment, Sam looking at Ed awkwardly
"It was open." Dean answered, and Ed shrugged.
"Now, Ed, um, when did the last tenant move out?
LANDLORD
Oh, about a month ago. Cut and run, too. Stick me for the rent.
"Well. Her loss, their gain! 'Cause if Dean-o and Jenny-B love it, it's good enough for me." Jenny froze for a moment, shooting Jo a warning look with the nickname. Dean tugged her closer, the dark haired woman falling deathly quiet. Jo pulled out a wad of cash, handing it to the landlord with a grin. "They'll take it."
After Ed walked away, Jo turned to Jenny to see her distasteful look. "What's up?"
"Oh, nothing. Just, don't call me Jenny-B, and why the fuck are you here?" Jenny snapped slightly, Jo giving her a partially rude look as the four walked back to the apartment.
"Does your mother even know you're here?" Dean asked as Jo looked at the sofa for a moment, humming.
"Told her I was going to Vegas."
"You think she's gonna buy that?" Dean frowned, looking at Jenny, who was back to examining the ectoplasm by the light switch.
"I'm not an idiot. I got Ash to lay a credit card trail all the way to the casinos."
"You know, you shouldn't lie to your mom." Dean grumbled.
"And you really shouldn't be here either. You see this, Jo?" Jo turned to Jenny, who was pointing at the goo. "You know what this is?"
"Uh... sewage leak?" Jenny's expression dropped and she looked at Sam, then to Dean.
"Yeah. She's going home."
"What! Come on I've never been on a case before."
"And apparently, for good reason. That's ectoplasm, Jo. Which means there's a very evil, very dangerous spirit here." Jo shrugged it off, Jenny's brows raised.
Before she could make another remark, Dean's phone rang. "Yeah. Oh, hi Ellen." Dean slowly turned to Jo, who backed up awkwardly. He held the phone away, still looking at Jo. "I'm telling her." The two had a furious, muttered argument until Dean put the phone back to his ear. "I haven't seen her. Yeah, I'm sure. Oh, Jen?" Jenny's eyes widened, shaking her head. "Nah, she went out on a beer run and to talk to some of the vic's friends." A shirt moment of silence. "Absolutely."
Dean hung up the phone, Sam and Jenny sharing a look, then looked at Jo.
