Forty-Five

Jenny stared at Madison's door, and Dean stared at Jenny, whose hand was raised to knock, but hesitated. After a moment, she knocked loudly, and Sam answered.

"How you doin'? My head feels great, thanks. Oh, by the way, thanks for not attacking Jenny." Dean snapped at Madison, whose eyes widened.

"We've gotta talk." Sam told Jenny and Dean, dragging the two in another room. Jenny was visibly uncomfortable standing in the house, rocking back and forth with her arms crossed. Sam stared at her for a moment with a solemn expression, sighing quietly. "She says she has no idea what I'm talking about."

"She's lying." Dean snapped, scoffing.
Or maybe she really doesn't know she's changing, you know? Maybe – maybe when the creature takes over, she blacks out."

Dean deadpanned, humming. "Like a hot Incredible Hulk. Come on, dude, she ganked her boss and her ex-boyfriend. That doesn't sound rash and unconscious."

"Yeah, but what if it was, Dean? I mean, what if some animal part of her brain saw both those guys as threats? Hell, the cop, too." Sam argued, Jenny still quiet as she thought.

"What are you, the Dog Whisperer now?" Dean asked, his brother glaring at him.

"Look, man, I just... I don't know, there, there, there was something in her eyes."

"Yeah, she's killing people!" Dean yelled, Jenny snapping back to reality and looked at them.

"But if she has no control over it—"

"Exactly. She can't control it." Dean interrupted, pressing a finger into his brothers chest. Sam looked to Jenny for help, and she stared at him silently for a while.

"If you think for even a second that I will side with you on this, Sam, then you are crazier than Madison thinks you are." Jenny said quietly, and Sam raised his brows in defeat.

"Jenny, she doesn't know what's happening to her."

"And I'm supposed to care? She's killed people, Sam. They may not have been the nicest people, but they didn't deserve to die. Werewolves don't care about feelings. If they see someone as a threat, they're going to kill them. That's how it works." Jenny snapped, fists tight as she spoke.

"I almost died to a monster like Madison before. My parents died to a werewolf. I'm not letting anyone die again."

"I'm not putting a bullet through some girl's chest who has no idea what's happening. And I'm not going to let you do it, either." Sam stepped in the way of Jenny, who stared up at him angrily.

"Sam, she's a monster, and you're feeling sorry for her?" Dean asked, his little brother glancing to him.

"Maybe I understand her."

"You understand the murderous, claws and fangs part of her, Sam? Because from what I remember when you were possessed, it quite literally was not you." Jenny stated, trying to step out if Sam's way, but he only grabbed her, forcing her in front of him.

"Look, there might be another way we can get the job done without having to waste her." Jenny frowned in confusion, looking to Dean.

"Are you thinking what I think you're thinking?" Sam walked over to his bag, opening John's Journal, flipping through the pages.

"Dad's theory – "lycanthropy might have a cure if you kill the werewolf who bit you, severing the bloodline"." Sam read as Jenny scoffed. "What?"

"It's a theory, Sam. A theory that doesn't work. There is no cure to lycanthropy." Jenny stated bluntly. Sam shrugged.

"It's worth a shot." Jenny raised her hands in surrender, frowning.

"Fine. But when she turns again, I'll be the one to put a bullet in her head." Dean gave Jenny a shocked look at how cold she had suddenly been with the idea of killing a werewolf, watching as she walked out of the room.

Madison was tied to a chair sobbing quietly, staring down at the floor. Jenny started to walk to the front door.

"Why can't you just let me go?" Madison cried. Jenny paused, staring at the doorknob.

"When I hadn't even hit double digits, my parents died. Murdered, by a monster." She answered quietly, slowly turning around. "Their hearts were torn out of their chests, eaten by the thing that killed them." Madison inhaled through her tears, slowly looking at Jenny. "When I was a teen... Their dad took me on my very first case. The same damn thing that killed my parents..." She revealed her scar to Madison, who gave her a puzzled look. "It almost killed me."

"Why do you still do this if you almost died?" She frowned. Jenny hid her scar again and scoffed.

"Because I have to. Because if I did stop, I know Sam and Dean would follow, and then who would save people from the demons that hide in your closet? Or kill the furry monster under your bed?"

"I didn't want to kill them, Jennifer." Madison said quietly. Jenny nodded, pressing her lips together.

"I know. But I can't risk someone else getting hurt if I can stop it."

———

"I'm telling you, it's a werewolf's hunting grounds." Sam stated after talking with Madison. Jenny crossed her arms, shrugging.

"Maybe, but that doesn't mean it's gonna be out there tonight." Dean said with a frown.

"It's the right time of the lunar cycle. Look, I know it's a long shot."

"Hey, you're forgetting something. Maddie's probably gonna turn soon, all right? We can't just let her take off to an all-you-can-eat buffet." Dean chuckled, Jenny thinking for a moment before she nodded.

"I'll stay with her." She stated with zero confidence, looking at Dean, whose eyes widened.

"Are you nuts? Alone?"

"I need to get over this fear one day, Dean. There will be plenty of werewolf cases down the road."

"And if she busts loose?" Dean argued. Jenny stayed quiet. "Jenny?"

"Then I'll do what I do best." Sam gave Jenny an unsure glance. "I can do it."

Sam sighed quietly, looking ti his brother. "We can save this girl, Dean. We need to go out there."

Dean realized Sam was feeling more intensely about this than usual, sighing after a long pause. "Fine."

Sam left the room, Jenny and Dean staring at one another for a moment. "If anything starts to go wrong with Madison—"

"I'll call you. Scout's honor." Jenny raised three fingers, trying her best to hide her fear with the joke. Dean stared with worry, taking her hand. His eyes flickered between hers, looking as if he wanted to say something, but was too afraid.

He gave her a long kiss,m before leaving the apartment. After a while, Jenny walked into the living room, noticing that Madison was still crying.

———

Jenny sat directly across from Madison, watching as the full moon began to rise above the skyline. Jenny's gun was laying on the table nearby, and she stared at it cautiously.

Suddenly, Madison's fingernails began to grow, stretching into claws. Her eyes turned bright blue, baring her fangs. Jenny's eyes widened, wanting to stay frozen in place before realization ran over her. Madison broke free of her restraints just as Jenny reached for her gun, throwing her into the glass table that had her gun.

Jenny yelled in pain as she grabbed her gun off of the ground, aiming it at Madison. The werewolf growled as Jenny slowly stood up, trembling as she clicked the safety off.

Madison lunged at Jenny and she rolled out of the way. Madison fell into her bedroom and Jenny slammed the door shut, grunting as she pushed the entertainment center in front of the door, trapping the werewolf inside.

Jenny breathed heavily, taking a step back before hissing in pain. Her leg had a cut from the glass, but not anything that she should worry about.

———

Jenny moved the entertainment center back to where it originally was, opening Madison's door. Her bedroom was trashed, Jenny sucking in a sharp breath.

"It should be over now. You'll never have to see us again." Jenny reassured, thought she was highly skeptical.

Standing, Madison surveyed her bedroom. Furniture was overturned, and there were claw marks covering every inch of the walls. When she turned around, Jenny is gone.

———

"It was sort of sad, actually. Glen had no clue what was going on. Hey, why do you think he turned Madison instead of just killing her in the first place?" Dean asked as Jenny took a large bite of her taco.

"He was in love with her." She answered, looking up at Madison's apartment building.

"Maybe his primal instinct did, too. Maybe he was looking for a little, uh, hot breeding action." Jenny coughed on her taco, trying not to look at Dean. "What?"

"Nothing. Nothing." Sam gave Jenny a concerned frown, Dean slowly turning to his brother.

"Speaking of Madison ...?"

"Oh, whatever." Sam scoffed as his brother laughed.

"Don't "whatever" me, man, you liked her. Maybe, uh—"

"Dean, she thought I was a stark-raving lunatic."

"She thought all of us were stark-raving lunatics, dude." Jenny spoke through a mouthful of taco, shaking her head.

"You saved her life. You were the one to kill Glenn." Dean slapped his brothers shoulder from the front seat, and Sam shook his head.

"Yeah, but she doesn't know that."

"You know, for a stake-out—" Jenny let out a strangely manly yell, turning to Madison with wide eyes and still, a mouthful of taco. "Your face car's a bit conspicuous. What are you still doing here?"

Jenny looked to Dean, who hummed. "Honestly? Uh, we're pretty sure you're not gonna turn tonight, but we've gotta be a hundred percent, so... you know, we're ... lurking."

"I think you're going to turn." Jenny said nonchalantly, taking another bite of her taco as Dean whacked her arm. Madison frowned at her.

"You know, you seem to be a pretty negative person." She commented, and Jenny laughed.

"No. I'm not. I just know the truth." Madison crossed her arms, raising a brow.

"And what would the truth be?"

"That the cure isn't actually a cure and you'll turn into a werewolf tonight—"

"Jenny—" Sam warned, but the woman ignored him.

"And you'll probably disappear into the night and go god knows where." Jenny shrugged.

"That sounds insane... But, if we're gonna wait it out... we might as well do it together. And prove you wrong." Jenny hummed in amusement at Madison's words, finishing her taco.

———

"You were telling the truth, weren't you? About everything. What you did – it was to help me." Madison stated as they all entered the apartment. Sam nodded in confirmation. "I did all of those horrible things ... when I turned."

"You didn't know." Sam argued, but Madison shook her head.

"So, when will we know for sure? Moonrise?" She questioned as Jenny sat down, humming in pain. Sam and Dean turned to her quickly, frowning.

"I got thrown into a glass table did you expect me to walk away without an injury?" Jenny gestured to her leg, the four going back to their conversation.

"No, I don't think so." Sam stated, watching Madison with a frown. "You turned middle of the night last night. I think we've gotta hang in until sun-up."

"Well, it looks like we've got ourselves a few hours to kill. Poker, anyone?" Dean grinned, clasping his hands together.

———

Jenny laid her gun on the end table, watching Madison as the moon began to rise. Sam and Madison watched Jenny from the couch, nervously glancing to the gun.

"Oh, no, you guys talk. This is just precaution."

———

Jenny looked out the window, frowning as the sun came up, and Madison sighed in relief.

"Does – does this mean it worked?"

"Yeah. I think so." Sam smiled, and Madison held hers.

"Oh, God, thank you. Thank you so much." Madison stood up and gave Sam a hug. Dean cleared his throat and they pulled away. "You, too, Dean. Thank you."

"I'm sorry, Mads." Jenny started, stuffing her gun away. "I guess I should have more optimism for the anti-hero's." Madison smiled softly, nodding.

"All is forgiven. Thank you, Jenny." There was a long, awkward pause, Jenny and Dean looking to one another before they both cleared their throats.

"So, we're just gonna head back to the hotel and ... uh... watch some Pay-Per-View, or something." As Jenny and Dean left, the older Winchester pumped a fist in the air.

———

Sam rushed into the motel room without a moments thought, slapping his hand over his eyes as Jenny yelled, and Dean threw a blanket over the two of them.

"Sorry! Sorry!" Dean grumbled, giving his brother the all clear, and he opened his eyes. "She – she turned."

Jenny and Dean shared a look, both sitting up. "What?"

"I couldn't grab her in time."

"We'll find her, Sammy. Ah— uh— Give is a minute." Sam left the room quickly, letting Jenny and Dean get dressed as he attempted his best to get rid of the imagine that had already burned into his skull.

After a few minutes, Sam, Dean and Jenny were rushing down the stairs of the motel. "I already called Bobby." Sam started, rushing to the Impala. "He doesn't know anything. Except he knew severing the bloodline wouldn't work. Just like Jenny." Jenny raised her hands up to state the obvious.

"Look at that. Jenny was right again. And who didn't listen!?" Jenny shouted to the world, turning back to see Sam glaring at her. "Sorry."

"They all say it's impossible to reverse it."

"How come she didn't turn when we were with her?" Dean frowned.

"Madison was asleep every time she turned. Obviously being awake didn't change her." Jenny once again stated the obvious.

"So, what, Sam puts her to bed and then she wolfed out?"

"What the hell does it matter, Dean? Look, we've gotta find some way to help her, some legend we missed or something."

"There is no way to save her Sam. You know that." Jenny argued as Sam shook his head.

"No. There has to be a way—"

"There is none! Like i've said! A silver bullet to the heart is the only way you cure them." Jenny yelled, watching as Sam tried to keep himself composed. "I know it's hard, Sam. But you have to face the facts. We can't save everyone."

"Well, then we have to look harder! Until we find something."

"Sammy, I don't think we've got a choice here anymore." Dean spoke softly. Sam's phone rang and he answered it quickly.

"Madison, where are you? ... Well, do you see any street signs? ... All right, hold on, Maddie. We're coming to get you, just stay where you are." Sam hung up the phone, The three getting into the Impala.

———

Madison was quiet for a long time. Everyone was as they all stared at Jenny's gun.

"I don't remember anything. I probably killed someone last night. Didn't I?" Madison let a tear slip, and the three hunters looked at each other.

"We don't know. There's no way of knowing yet." Jenny spoke, avoiding eye contact with Sam.

"Is there something else we can try to make it go away?"

"We'll find something. I mean, there's gotta be some answer, somewhere." Sam stated, and Jenny finally looked at him, shaking her head.

"Sam. Take it from the girl who's been afraid of werewolves her whole life... There is. No. Cure." She didn't mean to sound harsh, but Sam and Madison had to come to terms with it.

"Is – is she right?" Madison hesitated, watching as Sam choked up and turned away.

"Well, we could lock you up at night, but..." Dean trailed off, sighing as he shook his head. "You bust out, and some night you will, someone else dies. I'm sorry. I am."

Madison let out a soft cry, stifling. "So, I guess that's all there is to it, then."

"Stop it. Don't talk like that."

"Sam, I don't wanna hurt anyone else. I don't wanna hurt you." Madison picked up the gun, staring at it for a moment before looking at Jenny.

She raised her brows in shock as Madison handed her the gun, though she was silently hoping she would hand it to Sam. "Madison..." Jenny mumbled, quietly admitting to herself that just maybe, there was a chance at helping the poor woman.

"You said it yourself a thousand times. You can't help me, Jennifer." Jenny looked at Sam, whose tears started to slip. "I can't do it myself."

"Madison, no." Sam said firmly, the woman turning to him.

"Sam... I'm a monster." Jenny's eyes flickered between the two as she felt a lump form in her throat.

"You don't have to be. We could find a way, all right? I can. I'm going to save you." Madison let out a hard cry, shaking her head as she tried to smile.

"You tried. I know you tried. But this is all there is left." Madison forced the gun in Jenny's hand, and she stared at it, unsure. "I don't wanna die. I don't. But I can't live like this. This is the way to save me. Please."

Jenny turned to Sam, who couldn't hold anything in anymore. Jenny breathed sharply, looking to Dean.

"Sam..." Dean spoke in a gentle voice, leading his brother out of the room, now leaving just Madison and Jenny.

Jenny stared into the fearful eyes of the woman she had actually started to like from the few hours they spent together. "Mads—"

"I know... I'm not the one that killed your parents." Madison started, shocking Jenny slightly. "And... I know that I'm not the one that gave you that scar. But I— But I hope that this will bring you some sort of peace, like it will for me."

Jenny stifled a cry as a single tear slipped, which made Madison let out a soft chuckle. "I guess you're not as heartless as I thought."

"C'mon don't make me sob." Jenny laughed, sniffling as Madison did. Jenny looked down at the gun, pressing her lips together. "Are you sure?"

"I don't want to hurt Sam more than I already am." Madison slowly knelt down, and Jenny stayed still. "It's okay."

Jenny kept staring for a moment, taking a step back as she very slowly raised her gun to Madison's chest.

"Mads." Jenny whispered, watching as Madison closed her eyes. "I hope that... You can really forgive me for the things I have said to you."

She nodded slowly. "I forgive you." Jenny wiped her nose, steadying her hand and her breath.

"And... I hope the afterlife treats you well."

Jenny pulled the trigger.
