chapter 1 Christmas concert
A young man who appeared to be in his mid-20s was sitting in a school hall, it was clear he was popular as everyone looked at him. he paid them no attention to them his focus was on something else, he looked almost like snow white if the character had been born a man, pale white skin black hair and not red lips but eyes that seemed to almost be red but were a unique brown colour. if he wanted to, he could have any man or woman he wished but he didn't want that, not at the moment those around him who were single or were gay whispered to each other or their friends. "OK he's so handsome" "I know" another person whispered to their friend "OK is he single or what? if he's not his partner is so lucky" "I think they're single, they can't be a dad they have to be a big brother uncle or cousin right? no way are they a dad" he could hear some of the conversations, he ignored them water off a ducks back to him.
Once all people there were sat in their seats the headteacher came out they, where an older woman who appeared to be in her 40s her burgundy hair was pulled back into a ponytail, she wore a Christmas jumper with black pants and high heels not too high. she said "welcome everyone! to our Christmas concert, each class and year have been working hard to make this a great show, this year it is the turn of Mr Halls year 3 class to do the nativity play if you look at your programs it tells you the order the years and classes will come out" some parents looked at their programs to see when their children would be out.
The headteacher said "now first we have the nativity" the hall went dim and it started the parents watched, hoping to see their child or children. a small group was sat on a bench in their school uniform they were the narrators of the nativity the first child stood up a young boy and said his line aloud, not making any mistakes which the young boy was glad about. the show was going smoothly with a few hiccups here and there such as a forgotten line or two which was normal. soon a young girl stood up her blonde hair which at times looked almost white, was styled in pigtails with some hair left down. she had tinsel around her pigtails with small bells attached she said her line perfectly. shed practised hard to get it right, she looked into the audience and saw her father there who was recording her she smiled glad he came she knew he was busy but tried to make time for these events.
When she finished the adults clapped, she sat down so the rest of her class could get on with their performance, when she sat down a boy next to her whispered "you did good, why are you smiling?" she looked and whispered "my dad came, I thought he'd be too busy to" the boy nodded understanding. the nativity soon finished and the adults clapped the class bowed, some went and sat down on the floor in front some went out of the hall as they were taking part in something else in the Christmas concert. the young girl was one of those taking part in something else, she left the hall when she left, she heard her name "Amalia" she looked to see who had called her. it was a teacher they came over and said "have you finished?" she nodded making her little bells ring and said "yes miss, what do I need to do now?" the teacher said, "you just need to get what you're going to read out and come back" Amalia said, "yes miss" she left to get what she needed from her classroom she was nervous about this.
While she was doing that her father watched, he'd put his phone away 'it's a shame she wasn't in the actual nativity, it would have been nice to see her dressed up but there's always next year she's 7 I've got 3 more years of this' he thought to himself smiling as he watched. he saw no use in filming someone who wasn't his child, the concert went on once the school choir finished their last song, the headteacher said "we will take a small break, then continue" this let the children get a drink. unfortunately, they couldn't go to their parents yet though some didn't listen and went to their families, some adults took this as a chance to take any babies to the bathroom and change them or feed them, some went outside for a quick smoke while others answered calls or made them.
Amalia was sat waiting she felt nervous 'I hope I don't mess this up, I really don't' she thought "is everything OK?" she looked to see who had asked her that she saw an older girl. she nodded and said "yeah" the girl sat and said "really? you look nervous" Amalia said "I don't know," the girl said "it's OK if you are, this can be scary since there's a lot of people you know even if there's your family watching, is your family here?" she nodded "yeah my dad" "well I'll tell you a few tricks to help with nerves and stage fright, you just focus on your family if that doesn't work my nanna says to imagine the audience is your stuffed animals and things" Amalia nodded and said "thank you, but I'm scared ill mess up what I'll say," the girl said "it's OK if you do, everyone makes mistakes all you do is read it in your own time" Amalia nodded again.
The girl tried to calm her down, stage fight and nerves were not nice to have, soon a teacher came over saying "OK girls the break is almost over, please go to the bathroom if you need it and make sure you have everything you need" the older girl went to do what she needed to do. the teachers were organising the students in the order they were to go on, soon it was time for Amalia the headteacher said "now to finish our Christmas concert off, we have a student who won a competition we held in the school, the students were free to enter or not the competition was to write about Christmas, it could be anything a poem, a story what Christmas means to them, even their best memory or even a letter to Santa it was very hard for us to pick a winner, but we have the winner is a year 3 student her name is Amalia Michalis" the headteacher clapped so did everyone else.
Amalia took a deep breath and walked out to the middle of the stage. shed practised a lot, her teacher Mr Hall helped to by letting her stay in at breaks and lunches to practice reading it aloud. her father was surprised he had wondered why he hadn't seen her after the nativity, he got his phone out to record. she swallowed and said "wh-what Christmas means" shed decided to write about what Christmas meant 'oh no I stumbled' she thought. the teacher at the side of the stage nodded to say it's OK you are doing good keep going, Amalia took another deep breath and said "Christmas means different things to different people, some people are very religious and it's about Jesus more than Santa and that's OK. that's what Christmas was about first but it changed, from that to it being about Santa and giving presents to friends and family" she decided to focus on her dad "Christmas also can mean traditions, but it's different for everyone and its OK because everyone likes different things some people. like to have all their family at Christmas, because it might be the only time, they get to see them, but sometimes people like to be by themselves because they see their families all the time, and it makes them crazy" people laughed knowing how true that was "and that's OK too. since it's their tradition but some people don't have a tradition, a home, family or friends to spend Christmas with, and that makes me sad because everyone should have a safe place at Christmas, and one present so they feel included. my dad tells me to give away at Christmas my old toys and clothes so other kids who don't have anything can have something, and Santa can take my old toys and fix them to give another kid a new toy. I hope I can make a tradition for my school to bring all old toys or clothes, or new and extra food like we do with food at the harvest festival and give them to people and families who don't have anything, or their family can't get them to many things so they don't feel left out and can eat something nice feel warm, or have one new toy or book because to them an old toy to someone else is new to them"
Everyone was shocked at this and clapped, the headteacher said "and we will be starting that next year, we will be working with a local charity to do a food clothing and toy donation to give to families who do not have a lot" everyone clapped. Amalia bowed she sat down glad it was over the children sang one last Christmas song then they could go to their families. Amalia ran right to her father who knelt to her height and said "I am very proud of you" she said "really!" he nodded "that was a very mature thing you wrote about, and selfless thing about wanting to help children who don't have a lot" she nodded and said "I know, I think at Christmas they should get a present even one" he rubbed her head "I wonder if he's, her father?" "No way has to be her older brother, he's too young to be her father" people nearby were talking to themselves luckily, they weren't close enough to hear.
He got up from kneeling and said "now are you allowed to leave or do you have to stay?" Amalia said, "we have to stay, we have afternoon classes" he nodded and said, "alright then, I'll come to pick you up after school OK" she nodded and said, "OK dad" that shocked a lot of people who didn't know. 'Dad no, he can't be' 'he's so young has to be in his 20s, or almost 20' a lot of people who didn't know had the same thoughts. they weren't far off he was he was 24 almost 25, he rubbed her head saying "alright, be good and I'll see you after school" she nodded and was soon going as well as a lot of the other adults.
