THE SUMMER BEFORE
❖ ❖ ❖
It was a quiet, warm, summer's evening in the Borough of Islington, London, a muggle neighborhood that was as boring as they came. What wasn't quiet and boring, however, was the tension that was ensuing along with the high pitched screaming from a woman which came from 12 Grimmauld Place.
There, the Order of the Phoenix was having a meeting, although from an outsider's point of view it seemed more like a screaming match.
“Our son is not joining those lunatics that call themselves Death Eaters!” Screamed Annette Bromley, her face red with anger at even the thought of her son becoming a follower of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. She was a beautiful middle aged woman yet all the stress from the past couple years had caused a few grey hairs to appear in her light brown hair.
“Sweetheart, please try to calm down.” Gregory Bromley, Annette's husband attempted to soothe his wife as he placed a reassuring hand on her back. His frown lines had started to appear more prominent recently, as along with his wife, he too had been under a lot of stress.
This whole thing had started when their son, Amadeus, bursted into the Order's meeting of what their next plan of action should be.
“I want to become a Death Eater.” He had stated simply yet proudly. It took all his mother had in her not to faint. Chaos had immediately ensued, all of the adults refusing, especially his parents. They hadn't even let Amadeus explain why he had made this life altering decision.
Amadeus, however, knew how protective his mother could be. That's why he had sat down immediately in the chair his mother had been occupying when she shot up in rage. He knew it would be awhile before she calmed down.
Albus Dumbledore, the head of the Order, who coincidentally enough sat at the head of the table, had his lips pursed in thought and his hands clasped out in front of him. He had been silent throughout all the shouting and finally decided to speak up after half an hour of it.
“I think,” Dumbledore's calm voice drew all the attention to him, as his voice was soft, yet demanding, “that we should let the boy speak for himself.” At this, all heads swiveled in Amadeus’ direction and he almost shrunk in his seat at all the attention. However, like a true pureblood, he puffed his chest and stood up, commanding the room while also offering the seat back to his mother.
“I have been thinking a lot this past year, especially after everything that happened at the Ministry.” He began, referring to the unfortunate incident with the Dark Lord and Harry Potter which lead to Sirius Black, the previous owner of the house to be unfortunately killed. Everyone bowed their heads slightly at the mention of the incident and their deceased friend.
“There has been so much pressure put on Harry these past few years, on all of you.” Amadeus stated, he wasn't oblivious, he had noticed how strained his parent's marriage had become ever since He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named rose again.
“I think it's finally time for me to do my part in helping my parents and Professor Snape spy on the Death Eaters and You-Know-Who. Now,” Amadeus rose a finger to shush all of the excuses that were about to be flown at him, “I know you all think I'm too young and I don't know what I'm getting myself into. And while it may be true that this is an idiotic move, it's the only option we have. Plus, mum, dad, you guys joined when you were my age.” He pointed out for good measure. People always hated being hypocritical and he hoped that would stop them from using that excuse.
“Amadeus, dear,” Molly Weasley’s warm, motherly voice filled with concern chimed in, “We already have Severus plus your parents. It really wouldn't be necessary for you to also join.”
That was quite a good excuse, Amadeus had to admit. However, he had been expecting that and already had a counter up his sleeve.
“Yes, Mrs. Weasley, while that is true, Professor Snape is closer to You-Know-Who and my parents are closer to the adult Death Eaters, so what about the younger ones? They're more likely to be scared and have less of a guard up so they're the ones that would most likely spill something they might have overheard from their parents.”
Amadeus also knew that the Dark Lord would most likely have him do something at Hogwarts but he decided to not include that bit of information as the Order seemed to be swaying to his side on this decision and he didn't want anything changing their minds.
“Oh and,” Amadeus interrupted the mumblings of the adults as they gathered together to make their decision. He wanted to throw one last thing out there to really put a pin in their decision of saying yes. “Professor Snape has been teaching me occlumency and I'm starting to get quite good at it.”
At this, all heads turned towards Severus, a mass of black clothing and greasy hair. It took everything Amadeus had in him to not grimace every time he was in his vacinity. The Professor really needed to learn how to bathe.
“Severus, is this true?” Annette asked, her voice sounding so dainty now that she wasn't screaming at the top of her lungs.
“Yes, the boy is correct.” Snape droned monotonously. Amadeus had been discussing his with plan with him for awhile and Severus had actually helped him out a lot.
Gregory’s brows furrowed as he frowned while Annette pursed her lips in disappointment.
“It doesn't matter,” Gregory chimed in with that gruff voice of his. “As parents, we cannot lead our son into a suicide mission.”
All the other adults nodded their heads and hummed in agreement. Amadeus having grown up around all of them made him feel like a son to each and every one of them. A son whom they would protect until the end of time.
“I think it's a fabulous idea. I say we let him do it.” This was Dumbledore who obviously didn't care about Amadeus’ well being as much as the other adults.
“What?” Annette screeched in outrage, preparing for another screaming match as she rose from her seat once more. “Albus you can't be serious.”
“Oh, but I am, Annette.” Albus stated calmly in that all knowing tone of his. “Amadeus is a smart boy, nothing bad will happen to him.”
It only took a few words from Dumbledore to turn a room full of ‘no's’ into reluctant ‘yes’s’. He didn't, however, fail to remind Amadeus of the consequences of what would happen if the Death Eaters were to find out. Amadeus knew ahead of time of what the dangers could be and completely understood. He was quite used to lying at this point.
The next few hours were spent devising of a foolproof plan so that people wouldn't suspect anything and what to do if they were caught. Thankfully, it wouldn't be all that suspicious as his parents were already followers themselves. After the meeting finished, Amadeus would have to pack his things and immediately leave for the Malfoy Manor with his parents. He would go to Voldemort and state that he was finally ready to serve him and if all went well, Amadeus would be a Death Eater by morning light.
“Alright, I think we have discussed enough and Amadeus knows what he needs to do. With that said, this meeting is adjourned.” Dumbledore finished by banging the table with his wand.
The atmosphere became a lot lighter once those words were said and the adults started to chat happily while Mrs. Weasley went off to prepare some baked goods. The only quiet ones were the Bromley's as they knew what horrors were to face them later that evening.
“Why don't you head upstairs and start packing.” Gregory stated with a soft smile on his face, noticing that his son had started to tense up with worry.
Amadeus nodded in agreement and quietly stepped out of the room, almost running into Ron and Hermione. He could tell that they had been eavesdropping, or at least attempting to, and he smirked in amusement while crossing his arms.
“My, my, my, what do we have here?” He tsked in mock disapproval before bursting out into laughter. Hermione rolled her eyes, clearly not amused whole Ron eagerly asked for all the details of the meeting.
It took a few minutes but Amadeus relayed all the events that had transpired within the past few hours. The duo looked at him in shock.
“Amadeus, do you have any idea how dangerous and idiotic you're being?” Hermione whisper shouted while Ron looked on in betrayal.
“Yes, Hermione I do. Why? Do you like it?” Amadeus joked, throwing in a wink at the end. He knew all girls had a soft spot for bad boys and it clearly worked as Hermione's face turned a bright red. Even though she knew Amadeus was only interested in men.
“That's not funny, Amadeus, you could be killed.” She continued to scold. It may have been in his imagination, but to Amadeus it seemed as if Hermione's hair grew larger the angrier she got.
“Yeah,” Ron pitched in, eager to please yet not really having the brains to contribute.
“Guys, relax.” Amadeus attempted to reassure the three, placing a hand on Hermione and Ron's shoulders, almost acting as if they were little kids. “I know you guys will miss me but don't worry, you can stop by whenever you want and I can show you how to have a good time.” This time, two faces burned bright red at the innuendo and Amadeus winked once more before sauntering off upstairs.
Once Amadeus was in his room that he shared with Ron and Harry, he immediately began packing which was an easy task as he hadn't brought that much stuff with him in the first place.
A few minutes in, there was a knock on the door and Amadeus looked up just in time to see a redhaired head poke through the door. Yes that's right, Fred Weasley’s head had went through his door and the rest of his body soon after. Amadeus just shook it off with a laugh as the twins were always doing weird things.
“Wow, I'm surprised you learned how to knock, that new boy of yours must really be a keeper.”
Fred blushed as red as his hair but ignored the comment as he sat down on Amadeus’ cot.
“I can't believe you're actually doing this. I know you mentioned it but I never thought you would have the guts to.” Fred teased, sticking out his tongue like a child.
“Well believe it, Weasley. And if you came here to talk me out of it, you can just leave now.”
“What?” Fred asked, slightly offended that Amadeus would think so low of him. “No, I just wanted to remind you to be careful.”
Amadeus stopped his packing and looked at Fred with a soft smile. “Aw, I knew you still cared about me.” He teased the older boy.
Fred rolled his eyes in annoyance. “Just get over here.”
Amadeus didn't need telling twice as he immediately sat down on the bed and engulfed himself in a hug from and a kiss on the cheek from the redhead.
“Please promise me.” Fred’s voice was muffled by the material of Amadeus’ sweater, so he leaned out of the hug to be heard. “Promise me that you'll be careful.”
“Yes, of course Fred.” Amadeus promised seriously. “I'll be just fine.”
“Also, promise me that you won't get too close to anyone, that would be way too dangerous.”
Amadeus rolled his eyes but knew that Fred was just looking out for him.
“Yes, I promise.”
If only Amadeus had known that he had just told two lies that night.
