CHAPTER ONE
ENCOUNTERING THE CONSEQUENCES

❖ ❖ ❖

Amadeus was sat in a compartment alone on the Hogwarts Express, staring out the window, watching the countryside as it passed. His thoughts traveled towards the past summer; how everything had changed once he left Grimmauld Place. Amadeus rolled up his left sleeve, looking down at his new permanent tattoo: the Dark Mark. It was a snake twisted around a skull and it creeped the boy out simply looking at it. Not to mention that receiving it was the most unbearable pain and it still burned him to this day, weeks later.

Sometimes, he regretted it. Over the summer, as he stayed at the Malfoy Manor and prepared for his task, he had a lot of time to think about what he had gotten himself into. And every now and then he would wonder if he had made a mistake, if he shouldn't have gone over to the ‘dark side’. Yet those thoughts only lasted for a brief moment as he would shake himself back to reality and remember that small sacrifices were required to save not only the Wizarding World, but the muggle world as well.

A loud slamming broke Amadeus’ attention away from his arm as he looked up at Draco Malfoy who was staring back at him angrily.

“Pull down your sleeve, dumbass,” the blonde boy muttered with a scowl as he sat down across from Amadeus. They really didn't need anyone finding out about them and exposing them, ruining their whole plan.

Amadeus rolled his eyes at the angsty teen, however, he did as told and pulled his sleeved back down. He knew he shouldn't have been exposing his arm in broad daylight yet he couldn't help it, no matter how painful it was to him, it was quite a curious thing that Amadeus looked at when bored.

“I didn't even have it up for long, plus I was being careful.” He retorted back, lying as he had actually been distracted and hadn't been careful whatsoever. Amadeus was simply lucky that Draco had stumbled upon him first.

Draco rolled his eyes at the statement, not quite believing that Amadeus had been careful. It had only been a couple of weeks since the two formally met, however, they were forced to spend most of their time together. Therefore, they had picked up small things about each others personalities. Draco had picked up that Amadeus lied quite often so he wouldn't get caught or be proven wrong. And Amadeus picked up that Draco was constantly angry and brooding, yet he had already gotten used to his sour personality.

It wasn't as if Amadeus could blame Draco though. He had only been in this environment for a few weeks and he already felt like chopping off his own arm, while the Malfoy boy had been submerged in this all his life. People truly didn't know how stressful being around the Dark Lord and death eaters all the time was.

“Does it still hurt?” Amadeus spoke once more, referring to the mark that both of their arms bore. Amadeus had been with Draco when they received it and during their healing process as well. Sometimes he could still hear Draco's tortured scream as he tried to sleep at night.

Draco glared at the boy sitting across from him, obviously not wanting to engage in any form of conversation. Yet he nodded in agreement, that the mark did in fact still hurt.

“Mine doesn't hurt anymore.” Amadeus grinned at the Malfoy heir as he proudly stated that fact. He didn't know why he felt the need to lie about that but perhaps he just wanted to show off. To prove that no matter how rich Draco was, he wasn't as special as most of the world seemed to believe he was.

Draco scoffed in disbelief, obviously not believing Amadeus for one second. Even his father, whom had received the mark many years ago, stated that it still hurt him from time to time. However, Draco didn't call Amadeus out on his lie and instead leaned back in his seat, looking out of the carriage doors.

Amadeus watched Draco carefully as his grey eyes scanned their surroundings, before catching sight of something that obviously didn't sit well with him, if his top lip curling up in disgust was anything to go by. Amadeus followed his gaze until he came across Harry, walking along with Ron and Hermione. If Amadeus were being honest, he missed the trio. Not that they had been close before but they still talked and hung out every now and then. Now with his new mission, however, Amadeus had to stay as far away from Harry as possible. He didn't want to accidentally slip up and have Harry know all of their plan. Although, Amadeus doubted that would happen as he was quite a spectacular liar.

“Bloody Potter, that idiot.” Draco sneered in disgust, bringing Amadeus’ attention back to the blond teen. The next ten minutes were spent with Draco ranting about ‘that stupid Harry Potter.’

Eventually, Amadeus had had enough and cut off Draco in the middle of him cursing out the Boy Who Lived. “Wow Draco,” Amadeus spoke gleefully, giving Malfoy a mischievous look. “With how much you talk about Potter, it would appear as if you're in love with him.”

Draco gave him such a cold glare that if looks could kill, Amadeus was sure he'd be six feet under ground by now. Amadeus, not feeling threatened by the teen whatsoever, simply laughed in amusement.

“How dare you accuse me of being gay.” Draco spat, the words coming out of his mouth as if they were poison. In a pureblood society, the worst possible thing was to be attracted to the same sex as that would end their bloodline as they wouldn't be able to procreate and all.

Amadeus rolled his eyes at that statement. He was simply joking yet he knew what would happen to Draco if that was actually the case. “Relax, Malfoy,” he tried to ease the boy's worries, “I was just joking.”

Draco relaxed a bit at that yet his shoulders were still tense, ready to start fighting if someone were to question his sexuality again. Amadeus wondered why Draco found it necessary to defend himself so much if he actually were straight, yet he didn't think too much of it and looked back out at the Scottish scenery.

The next few moments were spent in tense silence before Pansy Parkinson bursted into their carriage, resulting in Amadeus releasing a sigh of relief. He didn't enjoy awkward situations, preferring things to be peaceful at all times. Yet with an impending war, that didn't seem too likely.

“Okay wow it's tense in here.” Pansy commented, quickly picking up on the stiff air surrounding the two boys. Yet both ignored her and didn't reply to her statement. She rolled her eyes at this but continued with what she had originally came there for. “Anyway, I was wondering if you boys wanted to sit with Blaise and I.”

Amadeus and Draco glanced at one another, seeming to have a silent conversation before Draco nodded at him slightly. Amadeus took the hint and looked at Pansy with a polite smile. “Yes, I think we will.”

Pansy nodded, smiling at Amadeus awkwardly. They had only met once before during the summer and Pansy didn't fully trust him yet. However, he was around Draco all the time and she trusted his judge of character so she decided to let him in on their little gang. Not as if it were her decision in the first place yet the thought still counted. Neither Pansy nor Blaise had been surprised that Amadeus had sided with the Dark Lord. His parents being ones themselves, it only seemed natural to other death eaters that Amadeus would soon join them.

The four hadn't been sitting together for long, Blaise and Amadeus sitting together while Pansy with Draco's head resting in her lap sat across from them, before it suddenly turned black. There were many screams, people worried that perhaps there would be another dementor attack, however, the commotion didn't last long before the light returned and people resumed what they had once been doing.

Draco sat up, removing himself from Pansy who pouted at this but didn't say anything. He looked up at the shelves which held luggage above them, before glancing at Amadeus who immediately understood. Amadeus knew exactly who it was and he internally cursed Harry for being so nosey. He was sorry that his friend would have to find out about him this way but he knew there was no other option as Draco never missed an opportunity to torment his ‘enemy’.

The group of Slytherins continued on until they reached Hogwarts, Pansy and Blaise having to do all the talking as Draco and Amadeus were silent, lost in thought. Once the train reached the platform, it took awhile before everyone departed. Pansy tried to get the two boys to join her and Blaise yet they declined, insisting that they had something to do.

“You have to go too,” Draco whispered lowly to Amadeus, the other boy shaking his head in refusal.

“No, I'm not going.”

Amadeus knew it may not be the best idea for him to be there while Draco did whatever he planned to do to Harry, yet he couldn't leave the two alone. He wanted to make sure Harry didn't get hurt too badly and after quite a lot of convincing from Amadeus, Draco finally caved and let him stay. But not without a warning of, “But you better stay out of my way,” first. Amadeus scrunched up his face in annoyance yet ultimately sighed and nodded his head in agreement.

Draco went over to the compartment door, shutting it before closing the blinds. Amadeus was sat nervously as he regarded Draco; he didn't see the reason why all the windows had to be blocked with shutters, and this made him shiver in fear.

“Didn't mummy ever tell you it was rude to eavesdrop, Potter?” Draco questioned coldly as he faced the door.

Amadeus bit his lip nervously, hoping to stop Draco from doing whatever it was that he was about to do. “Draco -”

“Shut it, Bromley.” Amadeus quickly snapped his mouth shut at that and sat back, nerves tingling through him as he watched on. “Petrificus Totalus!” Draco yelled out the spell, turning around and aiming at an empty spot on the ledge where people left their luggage. Amadeus winced at the sound of something landing harshly on the ground. He stood up to better regard the situation as the blonde haired boy bent down to uncover the invisibility cloak that had been hiding the Boy Who Lived from view.

“Oh yeah,” Draco chuckled harshly. “She was dead before you could wipe drool off your chin.” Amadeus closed his eyes and shook his head in disbelief at what Draco had just said. He had known the boy was a bully yet to say something like that was just cruel. The Slytherin watching the situation flinched as Draco stomped down on Harry's face, a loud crack being heard that was either the sound of Harry's nose or his glasses breaking. Amadeus desperately hoped it was the latter.

“Draco, stop!” Amadeus shouted in outrage, the boy turning to look at him curiously and in anger. “We can't have him too injured, otherwise people will be looking for who did it. Hate the boy all you want, but you can't deny he has fans.”

Draco paused, pondering over Amadeus’ words before eventually agreeing with him. “You're lucky Amadeus is here to stop me.” He spat out at Harry as he covered him back up with the invisibility cloak along with a few more threats.

Draco turned around swiftly, picking up his suitcase and leaving. Amadeus stayed behind for a few moments, looking at the spot that he knew Harry was. The boy was having a mental debate with himself as he pondered whether he should go and help him or not. He wasn't able to make a decision, however, as not even a second later, Draco was calling out to him. “Well are coming or not?”

Amadeus paused before reluctantly following after Draco, not before whispering a soft ‘I'm sorry’ towards the unconscious boy. He glared at his fellow house mate, the boy simply shrugging at him in response, knowing what Amadeus was angry at him for. “I had to do it.”

Amadeus scoffed in anger, crossing his arms with a shake of his head. “No, you didn't.”

Yes, I did, Amadeus!” Draco snapped at the boy as he stopped in his tracks, turning to face him. “Don't you understand that if we offer Potter any mercy of any kind - even the slightest bit - the Dark Lord will hear about it and we'll be punished. We have a job to do, Bromley. It would do you good to not forget about that.”

Amadeus looked down sadly with a sigh. He hated that Draco was right but he knew he was. He had known what he was getting himself up for when he volunteered to become a death eater and now he was having to live with the consequences.
