20: Playground regrets
So far, this Thursday had been announced as one of the hottest days of this year all over South Korea. Busan was luckily a coastal city, the sea stretching along the eastern coast city of South Korea, which meant that the heat wasn't as mean as in the middle of the country.
But none of that cheered on the trio who were hanging together at Haejin's place.
Not only was it hot, but the humidity made it unbearable to be out without having a way of cooling yourself down. And Haejin's overgrown and empty pool wasn't an option - Not even the heavy rainfalls that had been falling over the large city for the past couple of days would've cleaned it.
But today, the last day of July, was a sunny day and the sunlight beamed inside of Haejin's room, getting on Hoseok's nerves as it blinded him through the phone and at last he got up from his comfortable position in Haejin's bean bag and closed the blinds.
"Don't forget me when you marry that one hot doctor." Nia said jokingly, but deep down she was serious.
The three were talking about future.
It wasn't soon until they started college. The summer break was also ending soon, welcoming their last year as high schoolers.
Hoseok wasn't really paying attention, as his phone was way more entertaining and he knew he and Nia both planned on staying in Busan, which made him less worried about graduating high school.
Haejin wasn't going far either. She would apply for a college in Ulsan, pursuing her parents dream at the nursing degree. Nia had tried talking Haejin from doing only what would make her parents happy, but Haejin had recently claimed that she was getting more and more interested in the human body. Nia wasn't able to decipher whether her best friend was talking the truth or not, but for now she chose to believe her. After all it was almost a whole year until the decision.
"Well depends on how hot he is and how great of a dick game he has." Haejin replied.
"When did the conversation turn into talking about dicks?" Hoseok questioned, throwing himself back onto the bean bag Haejin had in the corner of her room.
"Since always," Nia covered her mouth from Haejin's sight to try to drown out what she was whispering to Hoseok, "you know she's hungry."
Haejin let out something in between a scoff and a laugh, "Says you?"
Nia's playful face was replaced with a tight one, her lips pressed into a thin line as she turned to Haejin immediately shooting her with her eyes.
Her newly born sex life was NOT something she wanted to bring up in front of Hoseok.
Haejin put her hands up in front of her chest defensively.
A silence fell over the room, Hoseok had found his phone again preoccupied with supposedly a game, Nia observed as his tongue was slightly out at the corner of his mouth revealing his engagement and concentration about whatever was going on.
The girl clicked her tongue at the roof of her mouth, earning Haejin's attention which had also been directed at Hoseok.
"No matter what..." Nia spoke, earning Hoseok's attention as well by the sentimental tone in her voice, "...we'll stay best friends, right?"
A jokingly roll of eyes on Haejin's face made Nia stick out her tongue at her.
Behind her, Hoseok had turned off his phone, a prickling feeling welled up in his body.
Best friends
That was all they ever were.
The boy sighed lowly, but nothing that reached the girl's ears and eyes.
"Don't say that! People in movies always say that and then one of them gets fucking run over and I'll have to live with his pouting face for the rest of my life!" Haejin pointed at Hoseok.
"I'm not pouting." Hoseok claimed, disregarding the rest of Haejin's words.
"I meant if Nia got run over. I wasn't talking about right now... but now that you mention it, you are pouting." Haejin taunted, followed by a chuckle, "Is it-"
Haejin stopped talking as her phone rang. She checked the caller ID, a shy smile grazing her lips. Nia noticed and started smiling herself.
Haejin? Flustered?
A rare occasion, but something that made Nia happy.
She answered the call and left the room, leaving Hoseok and Nia alone together.
It was the first time in a while that an awkward silence and tension filled the space between the two childhood friends. Nia was embarrassed, thinking Hoseok had payed attention to Haejin's comment about Nia being horny. Hoseok was frustrated that Nia kept friend zoning him without even knowing.
It was time to do something about it finally.
A few minutes went by before Haejin entered the room again, breaking the tension with a massive smile plastered onto her face.
"Who was that?" Nia nudged the girl as she walked by.
Haejin cleared her throat before speaking, "Namjoon... now leave."
"You're kicking us out?" Hoseok spoke from the bean bag now also interested in the conversation as he was asked to leave the most comfortable seat in the world.
"I indeed am, I have a date and you have exactly five minutes to get out..." Haejin turned to look at Nia, "both of you."
"Five minutes!?" Nia got up from her seat in the bed, "First of all, I need to know all the details, hell you didn't tell me a single thing about this guy and now you're going on a date with him?"
"You're welcome." Hoseok added, slowly getting up from the comfortable seat.
Nia lifted her brow in confusion, switching looks from Haejin to Hoseok and back to Haejin.
"He introduced me to Namjoon." Haejin spoke simply, raising her brows as if it was obvious.
Namjoon was Hoseok's friend. He was at the party. Haejin had went away with Namjoon and she hadn't seen her afterwards, that night. That's why Haejin had been so giggly when Namjoon and Hoseok showed up at the BBQ the other day.
Nia mentally slapped herself for missing the clues. Perhaps, something else was on her mind - like a dark haired boy with tattoos down his arm, a pierced bottom lip and deep dark eyes that only she could make glisten.
"Well it's super fun standing in silence as you're connecting the dots, but I have to get ready so kindly leave." Haejin deadpanned.
Nia snapped out of her thoughts and, without luck, tried prying a bit more information from the girl before leaving.
Despite the weather being a bit nauseating, Nia and Hoseok stopped by at a playground on their way home around the corner of Nia's street.
Nia's mom had called and told her to get home soon and eat. Nia didn't know the rush, her mother wouldn't tell her. But Hoseok had convinced her to stay a little while. He seemed a little down and Nia wouldn't want that.
The girl was rocking gently on a swing, earning a tiny bit of wind to cool her down.
Hoseok was standing in front of her, lightly pushing her knees to make her swing keep going.
"You know how people tend to say a girl and a boy can never be just friends?" Hoseok broke the comfortable silence between the two.
"Yeah, stupid right?" Nia chuckled, leaning backwards to swing a bit higher.
But when it swung forward, reaching Hoseok, he grabbed the ropes, stopping the swing and holding it still.
"Why'd you stop it?" Nia puffed out her bottom lip in fake bitterness, trying to fool around with her best friend and hopefully get him in a lighter mood.
But the wrinkle between the boy's eyebrows in front of her stayed, his lips pressed into a thin line, not even trying to hide what he was feeling. He didn't want to anymore.
Nia looked up at him with downturned eyes. She wanted to ask him what was wrong, but she didn't get to as the boy bended down, face aligning with hers.
Their faces were close. Nia noticed Hoseok's eyes turning glossy, his breaths getting deeper.
"I..." He spoke hesitantly, looking deeply into her eyes, "I don't think it's stupid."
Nia didn't get to comprehend what the boy had said before he pulled on the ropes, making Nia's face come closer and meeting her lips.
Her lips was soft as he had imagined them. The boy moved his hand to her cheek, wanting to feel if her skin was burning as much as his. She didn't kiss back immediately, but slowly starting moving her lips against his.
His lips were soft, but not as soft as she was used to. It caught her by surprise that Hoseok had leant in to kiss her.
It was an unpleasant feeling that filled her body.
This was wrong.
She wanted to pull away more than anything else, but she didn't.
She was shocked most of all. But she realized in that moment that Hoseok actually liked her.
Jungkook had been right to be nervous, but Nia didn't like Hoseok like that.
But he was still her best friend. And even though this kiss was so wrong, she didn't have the heart to pull away. She didn't want to break her best friend's heart.
Hoseok's tongue swiped across Nia's bottom lip, applying to deepen the kiss.
Finally Nia pulled away, shrugged her head out of Hoseok's hand and stood from her seat.
Without giving the boy time to talk nor react to her pulling away, she spoke a few words before turning around and leaving the boy, "I need to go."
"Wait!" Hoseok called, but it didn't reach Nia.
As the girl reached her house, she immediately went to her room, guilt rushing over her.
She didn't want to kiss Hoseok.
She didn't stop either.
But she wanted to.
She didn't do anything wrong, did she?
All she had to do was tell Jungkook.
But how would he react? Would he even care that Nia didn't ask Hoseok to kiss her? Would he think she cheated?
Did her best friend selfishly just ruin her relationship?
The storm inside her body overwhelmed her eyes with tears, her small body almost shaking on the bed. She didn't want to lose Jungkook. Was this gonna make her lose him?
Just the thought made her want to rip out all her insides.
She needed to tell Jungkook the truth. It would be for the best.
But with her trembling fingers hovering over the keyboard on her phone, it was hard even to type a simple hello.
Cause she fucked up. But then again, she didn't fuck up...?
Guilt, confusion, hatred, regret and defeat all rushed over her in that moment.
She liked Jungkook.
Hoseok shouldn't have kissed her.
She should've pulled away sooner.
Was this the end?
