Prologue
Sunlight coated the pale blue walls of Mae's bedroom, though the young girl's wistful gaze remained preoccupied with the withering flower which sat atop her bedside table. She sighed in frustration with her all of her previously failed attempts to revive the plant.
After bathing the plant with trickles of water and nourishing it with food both proved to be ineffective, Mae decided to embrace more unconventional methods. She attempted to soothe it with the tones of her voice, gently singing a new lilting tune each evening in hopes that it may gradually restore its beautiful form. She even moved it to countless locations throughout her house in belief that it may thrive outside the confines of her bedroom. All of her efforts were unsuccessful.
As time progressed and Mae remained unsuccessful in her attempts to revitalize the flower, she began to feel a looming sense of failure. Her thoughts sunk with the belief that she was just incapable of the simple action of tending to a plant.
"I can't do anything right." She spoke, feeling defeated. As she sighed once more, Mae took notice of another fleeting petal dwindling from the core of the flower, softly landing in the soil. She balled her fists and slammed them down on the table.
"Why won't you bloom?!" She shouted in an outburst of emotion. "I have tried everything for you, why won't you bloom for me? Why? I don't understand what I'm doing wrong." Her voice became a soft whisper nearing the end of her words as she realized that her efforts were hopeless.
