Dashed Hopes
Despite it only being midday, Mae decided to rest, seeing as she wasn't plagued with the crushing reminder of her failures while she slept. She felt no urge to wake until late in the evening, long after dinner had passed, leaving Mae to feel sick as she awoke.
Moments later as she adjusts her eyes to the inky darkness engulfing her bedroom, the distinct sound of her doorbell pierces the previously silent house. Mae murmurs incoherently to herself as she hoists herself from the comfort of her bed, while contesting with herself whether or not she should open the door. Her higher self prevails and she hesitantly treads toward the door. Upon opening it, the familiar face of her friend, Rayla, appeared with a beaming smile.
"I didn't mean to pop in like this, but it's not like you not to answer any of my calls. I decided to come over with supper." Rayla spoke as she revealed the tupperware container with her signature casserole inside.
Wordlessly, Mae embraced her friend whose company meant more to her than she could express. She felt a sense of relief from the enchaining thoughts that she'd been suffering from for such a remarkably long time. After detaching herself from Rayla, she invited her inside for dinner and conversation. As they reminisced throughout the evening, it dawned on Mae exactly how long it had been since she visited any of her friends, Rayla included.
As the evening became the early hours of the new day, Rayla decided to head home, apologizing that she couldn't stay any longer.
"Bye bye, Mae. Let's do this again, and soon!" Rayla chimed as she headed down the street. Mae smiled and nodded before closing the door behind her.
