BECOMING
She held him while he rasps his last breath, his eyes start to turn change, turning opaque, showing the first hint that he was becoming, forehead knotting, starting to take the first stage of dooming. It never ceases to amaze me.
The whole process of turning's both frightening and otherworldly, tendrils of opaque threads making way to the pupil, more joined until it covers his pupils, his body seized once, twice.
His fingers twitch uncontrollably, Muna reluctantly let go of him. Not ready to witness what happens next. A roar echoes all around, air whooshes as a Buki lands before us, canines out. Flashing fangs, spikes on its back and sharp, forked-tail glistening in the meager light, we watch as it, open its jaws, and clamp the Zukai's body between its jaw. Forked- tail flared out to keep us at bay.
With a huge leap, it jumped over the gate. Its fur brush against the reaper stones, it releases a painful yelp and clambers off the entrance. I turn around and walk right into a fist. I stumble back, eyes smarting, starlight bursting in my vision.
"Never knew that you were so attention-starved, all you had to do to get a girl's attention is some flowers." I smirk at Jagne, "But I guess the only way you get to make me see stars is by hitting me," I simper, batting my lashes at him, I twirl a lock of my hair.
Jagne glowers at me, eyes full of poison, anger barely held in check. A muscle ticked in his jaw, a vein pulsed madly on his temples. I stared back in defiance, licking the blood on my split bottom lip.
"How dare you! You could've had us all killed, just be ready for the council when we go back! "He snarls, his glacial-gray eyes darkening in anger. I shiver and stand my ground, I will not show my fear. I am strong, I'm part of the Kendulusu tribe. If I have to face the council, so be it. If given a chance, I would do it all over again, not a thing would I change.
"With pleasure, at least I'm not a monster ready to let his people die, let the council judge me; in all our eyes, you're judged even if none tells you otherwise."
He moves fast, a muscle quiver was all that I saw, I stumbled back from the blow, lava-hot pain bubbles on my jaw. I deflect a second hit, dodging to the left, I attack furiously, following it with an uppercut that had him widen his eyes in surprise, then went into slits as he laid a barrage of punches that went on ceaselessly. A wicked punch had me wobble a few feet back and land onto my ass.
My red hair came off its ponytail, shrouding my face from view, a scarlet puff of cloud, a sharp contrast to my ebony skin and bright blue eyes that spit fire at him. Another factor that draws the line between me and the tribe makes me stuck out like a sore thumb in my town.
Some superstitious people even call me the devil's spawn, some devil's whore, I was bad luck to them, bad juju they really need not tell me in person, the whispers were enough to follow me around. But I bore my cross well, drudging day after day, not showing that it hurts me. He strides forward, gray eyes an enraged hue darker than usual. At that moment, he should be the one called the Devil's spawn, lifting hands to strike me again, but a hand catches ahold of his. He seemed startled that someone dared stop him from meting out his punishment.
For a moment, you could feel the air literally freeze, turning glacier-cold as he whips his body around to see who it was that dared touch him. Much more stop him from punishing me, interrupting his little court.
Enough, leave the punishment to the council, his second-in-command Adilo bit out strongly, his voice leaving no room for argument, face vacant. One look at Madi's furious eyes had him nodding grudgingly.
"Fine, monitor her. One wrong step, and I won't think twice about teaching her where she belongs."
"Obviously not at your feet, bastard!" I spit out glaring as I took Adilo's hand, letting him haul me to my feet, strode past Jagne, who looks really mad to spit out nails.
Another hunter took care of Corr, while Muna sobbed uncontrollably in Saliu's arms. Every tear, every sob, makes my heart clench and crumble piece by piece, something that will haunt me till the day I die. I wished I had died today instead of him.
