Chapter Seventeen; To the Test

"Ryuzaki!" I run up to him and wrap him in a bear hug. "It was so lonely..."

"My apologies but we cannot do this right now. He tells me emotionlessly and motions to the screen in front of him.

"Finally, the suspicion has been dispelled and we get to be freed." Light says. Chief Yagami's driving a car with Misa and Light in the backseat.

"No." Chief Yagami replies. "From here on, you two are being taken to an execution chamber. I took it upon myself to transport you prisoners to the execution chamber secretly kept in th basement of the institution."

"Execution chamber?! What are you talking about?" Light asks.

"L has determined that you are Kira and Misa is the second Kira." Chief Yagami explains. "He declared that if you two are executed, then the murders will stop."

"The murders should've already stopped. That's what I was told!"

"No, they are still going. That was probably just L's method to get you to confess. That's not the point." Chief Yagami replies. "L's plan of terminating you two in order to stop the murders was swiftly approved by all the heads of the U.N. and the government. Kira's execution will be kept secret from the public."

"Dad! That's ridiculous! I am not Kira!"

"That's right. What are you thinking?! He's your own son!" Misa yealls

"This is not my decision. It's L's." Chief Yagami explains. "In all investigation affairs, L's decision is absolute. He has solved many different cases in the past and hasn't been wrong once."

"Dad, your going to trust L over me?!" Light is clutching his pants leg.

"L said that if the murders do not stop after this, then he'd take responsibility by taking his own life."

"This isn't like L at all. Up until now, L has always come up with definite proof in all his cases. Is he going to let it end like this!?"

"We're here." Chief Yagami says, pulling into a desserted field.

"Are you planning on letting us go?" Misa asks.

"No one will see anything that happens here." He tells Misa. "I brought you guys here instead of the execution chamber on my own. Light, I'm going to kill you and myself here."

"What are you saying?! That's insane!" Light freaks out.

"Please stop! You're crazy!" Misa panics. "Because your child is Kira, you are going to kill him and then yourself? If you want to die, then just die by yourself!"

"No, it's different from Kira." Chief Yagami replies. "I have a responsibility as a parent and a responsibility as the chief of police. It's a decision the higher ups made. Either way, you are going to be executed. If that is the case, it might as well be by my hands."

Chief Yagami pulls a gun out of his jacket and points it towards Light.

"No no no no no..." I say to myself aloud. "This is murder! Ryuzaki!"

"Calm down Miss Ashley." Aizawa spits at me. "It's not what you think."

"Dad! I am definitely not Kira." Light says with his voice wavering. "Dying right here would be what Kira expects! Don't you understand?"

"Amane. My son and I will die right here, but I have no reason to kill you. The police will eventually find this car, you can be justly executed in the execution chamer." Chief Yagami tells her.

"Dad!" Light exclaims.

"Light, from one murderer to another, I'll see you in hell." Chief says, pulling the trigger.

I turn my head away from the computer screen as the gun fires.

There's a moment of silence before I hear Light's voice, "A blank?"

"Thank goodness." Chief sighs in relief. "Forgive me you two. There was no other way to free you from confinement but to do this. Please understand, I did this because I believed that you weren't Kira."  He then turns towards the camera. "Were you watching, Ryuzaki? I did what you said and as you can see I'm still alive."

"Yes, it was a convincing performance." Ryuzaki replies. "In that situation, if Amane were the second Kira who could kill by just seeing the person, then it was probable that you would have been killed before Light was shot. If Light were Kira, the Kira in my mind would have killed even his father if necessary. Although, in Light's case, it's possible that he had figured out mid-way that it was an act. I shall end all three of our previous suspects detentions, as promised. And from now on, Misa will be placed under surveillance until everything involving the video confession and the evidence concerning what she claims to be occult videos is uncovered."

"What's that about? Your still accusing me?" Misa pouts.

"You still get to return to your normal life, isn't that all right?" Chief asks her. "Surveillance can mean you gain the protection of the police if you haven't done anything wrong."

"Oh yeah. So since I'm not the second Kira, then I just need to think of it as gaining a bodyguard."

"As for Light, I'll allow you to participate in the investigation only if I'm with you 24/7." Ryuzaki says.

"I understand, Ryuzaki." Light says. "Let's capture the Kiras. Together."

—later that evening

"Do you really need to go this far, Ryuzaki?" Light asks as they are both chained together by their wrists.

"I'm not doing this because I want to you know." Ryuzaki defends himself.

Oh my god. "Do you really have to do this Ryuzaki?"  I ask him.

I went fifty days without him and now I won't get a minute alone with him.

"Doing this with guys is kinda gross. Are you that type, Ryuzaki? You were together with Light at the university." Misa says.

Is she suggesting that Ryuzaki is gay?

I snicker and Ryuzaki shoots a glare towards me.

"I'm not doing this because I want to." Ryuzaki repeats.

"But Light is mine, and if you're with him 24/7, then when are we going to go on dates?" Misa questions.

"On dates, it will be the 4 of us." Ryuzaki motions to him and Light cuffed together then Misa and I.

"What?! Are you telling me that when I kiss him, It's going to be in front of you two?"

"I never said you had to kiss him. However I will be observing."

"Ah! I knew it! You're a pervert."

"Light. Can you please make Misa be quiet?" Ryuzaki asks.

"Yes, please do." I mutter.

"Hey!" Misa pouts.

Aizawa grabs Misa by the arm, "Now. Go to your room."

"Why?" Aizawa drags her out the door and tries to protest. "Light! Even if it's the four of us, let's go on a date okay?"

Aizawa closes the door on her as everyone lets out a sigh of relief.

"Ryuzaki, can't you do something about the continuous changing of hotels?" Light asks. "I think that we should just settle down in one place and continue the investigation."

'Yes, I have also been thinking about that for a while now." Ryuzaki replies while dragging Light to his laptop. "From the time that I decided to meet with all of you and do this investigation, I started building this." He clicks his mouse a few times a brings up a building plan. "It will be complete in a few days. Twenty-three floors high and two basement floors. The rooftop is made so that it cannot be observed from the outside, but there is also enought landing room for at least two helicopters. From the outside it just looks like another skyscraper, but to get inside one must go throught a long line of security checks. The computer equiptment inside is also not anything that you would see everyday. From the fifth to the twentieth floor, each floor has four private rooms. I would like to have everyone live there as much as possible. Even if we were to increase the amount of people participating in the investigation, we can have at least up to sixty people. There's no problem if we give Misa a floor of her own, right?"

Light stares in amazement, "This is amazing."

"More than that, where is all this money coming from, Ryuzaki?" Matsuda asks.

"I wish to solve this case no matter what." Ryuzaki replies.

"That's no answer." I say

—next day

"This is the lamest date I've ever been on." Misa sighs disappointedly. "You two most have the most boring dates ever."

"We 're not-"

"Just pretend like we're not here." Ryuzaki interrupts me. "By the way, are you going to eat that piece of cake?"

"Cake makes you fat. I'm not going to eat any." Misa replies.

I give Ryuzaki my cake as Misa gives him her piece too.

He takes it and starts eating, "Actually I find that you don't gain any weight as long as you burn calories by using your brain."

"So now you're calling me stupid!"

"Even if I leave you two alone, I'll still be watching on surveillance cameras, so it won't make any difference." Ryuzaki replies, with a fork in his mouth from his now finished second piece of cake.

"You pervert! Would you stop it with your creepy hobby?"

"You can call me whatever you want, but I'm still taking the cake." He says, reaching over the small table to grab Misa's cake.

"It's not a hobby, we just don't trust you." I tell her.

"Why do you have to bring her everywhere you go?" Misa asks, glaring at me.

"Because she's my assistant." Ryuzaki tells her.

"Sure because that's what those matching rings mean. Anyways I don't trust her around my Light. She seems like the type who would go for him no matter her relationship status."

"Excuse me?" I ask in disbelief. "Are you calling me a-"

Light interrupts with a chuckle, "Fiesty."

I glare at him.

"Anyways, we moved to a headquarters that has the equiptment but you don't seem to have any kind of motivation, Ryuzaki." Light says.

"Motivation?" Ryuzaki repeats. "I'm sorry I don't have any. I'm actually depressed."

"Depressed?"

"Yes. It's because I kept thinking you were Kira. It's just a shock if that theory is wrong. I still have suspicions about you though. That's why we are doing this. However, Kira was able to control people's actions. If Kira controlled you and Misa in a way that I'd suspect you then the ends would meet, but why you two are still alive is the part that doesn't make sense." He sighs, "If Kira found and controlled you because you were capable of stealing the police's information and made it so that I'd suspect you, then even I'd be bitter. I'm very down about it."

"With that theory..." I stop him. "If Misa and Light were controlled wouldn't they still have been Kira?"

"Yes. That is why I'm stuck. Controlling someone to kill criminals. If that person gets caught, then the powers transfer to someone else and their momories disappear. There would be no closure just by catching them."

"But that hasn't been officially decided yet." Light speaks out. "We still don't know enough about Kira. Bring out some motivation."

"I can't bring much out. It's not a good idea to try too hard. By trying too hard to chase, we put our lives at greater risk, don't you think? To think how many times I thought I was going to die..."

Light suddenly stands up.

"Hmm?" Ryuzaki mumbles, turning his head to look at Light. As soon as he turns his head, Light punches him right in the face and causing Ryuzaki to drag him along.

"That really hurt you know." Ryuzaki states.

Light laughs lightly, "Don't be ridiculous. Due to the facrt your theory is wrong because we're not Kira, you have no motivation?"

"I may have said it badly. Let's not make a move because the situation might just get worse."

"What are you talking about? If we don't move then there is no way to catch him. Who's the one that told Kira that he'd bring him to execution on TV?" Light picks Ryuzaki up by his shirt, "How many police, FBI, announcers, and other innocent people do you think got involved!? Aren't you the one who detained Misa and I?"

"Also Aki." Ryuzaki replies. "But whatever the reason-" He kicks Light in the jaw. "An eye for an eye my friend." He's suddenly pulled forward and the two land on the couch to only knock it over. "Is the reason I am feeling down really that unreasonable?"

"Yes. Yes it is. From the way you say it you sound like you won't be satisfied unless I am Kira." Light replies.

"I'm not satisfied unless you are Kira?" Ryuzaki repeats. "I see. That might be true."

Light punches Ryuzaki in the face but Ryuzaki doesn't move. He stands there with a fist in his face.

"Like I said, an eye for an eye. I'm a lot stronger than I look you know." Ryuzaki says, kicking Light again so he staggers backwards. He recovers and they both grab on to each other's shirts ready to punch again. The phone suddenly rings.

The boys stop as I pick up the phone, "Hello?"

"Aki! Good news!" Matsuda says.

"Okay?" I turn to Ryuzaki. "It's for you."

He drops Light's shirt from his grasp to pick up the phone and hold it to his ear.

"Yes..? Hm... Okay... I see."

He drops the phone and hangs up.

"What was that?" I ask.

"Matsuda is acting stupid again."

"Well, that is his specialty." Light says.
