never really over; ❛ DEATH TO JULIET ❜
❝ vampires live forever ❞

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

Rebecca did not want to watch it all happen again. She did not want to watch everyone pack their bags from her stool in the kitchen with the knowledge that everyone was leaving her yet again. So, she wandered off to her favorite diner, Griddy's Doughnuts, near the house while everyone else packed and said their goodbyes.

Landon promised her that he would not be leaving until the following day. But, quite frankly, she felt like he stayed in touch with her out of pity.

Rebecca sipped her hot chocolate, sitting in her usual booth with her head stuck in a book. She usually went to the diner at night, when she couldn't sleep. It was nearby, had good food and drinks, it was peaceful, and was open twenty-four hours. What more could a girl want?

The doors opened behind her but she paid no mind. She heard someone sitting at the bar and was about to turn the next page of her book when the person behind her rang the bell three times in a row. Rebecca narrowed her eyes and turned around to see Five looking around the diner impatiently.

A barely audible sigh escaped her lips and she quickly turned around so he would not notice her. She had no luck.

Why couldn't he just go back into the future and leave her alone? Where would he even go? He would probably stay at The Umbrella Academy and bother her for the rest of her miserable life.

She heard another man sitting next to Five just as the waitress approached him.

"Sorry, the sink was clogged." The old woman let out a chuckle. "So, what will it be?"

The old man ordered. "Uh, give me a chocolate éclair."

"Can I get the kid a glass of milk or something?"

Rebecca muffled her laugh with a cough.

"The kid wants coffee. Black."

The waitress let out a nervous chuckle. "Cute kid."

"I don't remember this place being such a shithole." Five grumbled and looked around with a heavy frown on his face. "I used to come here as a kid. Used to sneak out with my siblings and our... friends. We ate doughnuts until we puked. My ex and I used to come here, too. We had our first date here. Simpler times, huh?"

Rebecca scrunched her face up. It was not a date. They were barely even friends and he had just caught her sneaking out at two in the morning so he followed her. Plus, she was not his ex. They were never official. She could not believe he even had the audacity to call her that after he left her for seventeen years with no goodbye.

She drowned out the rest of their conversation until she heard a couple more people enter the diner. She looked over her shoulder to see four armed men surrounding Five and holding him at gunpoint.

"That was fast." Five hummed, unphased. "I thought I'd have more time before they found me."

Rebecca's blood ran cold and she ducked underneath the table so they would not notice her. What the fuck did that idiot get himself into?

"Okay." The man closest to Five nodded. "So let's be professional about this, yeah? On your feet and come with us. They want to talk."

"I've got nothing to say." Five seemed unbothered. Too unbothered. There was a man with a gun to his head and three other guys holding the same weapon in their hands, ready to strike at any moment.

"It doesn't have to go this way." The man continued. "You think I want to shoot a kid? Go home with that on my conscience?"

"Well, I wouldn't worry about that. You won't be coming home." Five smiled. He grabbed the butter knife on the counter and teleported behind the man with the gun. He placed it to his jaw and grunted when another man shot him in the arm.

Rebecca yelped in surprise at the sound. All eyes turned to the table which she was hiding under.

"At least let me walk the lady out first. We wouldn't want to fuck up the timeline. Right, boys? I think you can be patient."

Rebecca's eyes widened when a pair of legs appeared in front of her. She looked up to see Five standing in front of the table, giving her an unreadable look. He held a hand out to help her stand and she took it with a skeptical look. He pulled her up to her feet and she looked at the armed men, who were staring at her with wide eyes.

"You need to get out of here." Five told her sternly. Then, in a whisper, he added, "I need you to scream, Becca. Pretend to be walking out and then scream."

Rebecca moved her gaze from the men toward Five. She held his gaze, her glare burning through him.

"I'll see you around, Five." She said and made her way to the exit of the diner.

What would she even gain from saving his ass? Would she feel better about herself? No. Would she be happy and content that he was still alive and in her life? Probably not.

So, why the fuck did she still freeze while walking out?

She turned around and Five teleported away from the scene so he wouldn't face the consequences of the banshee scream. She opened her mouth and a scream tore through her throat a moment later. The armed men dropped their weapons and started holding onto their heads. She knew how it worked.

First, their bodies shook. Then, there would be an unbearable pounding in their heads. It was their brain which was slowly squirming due to all of the pressure around it. And finally, it exploded.

Rebecca grimaced as their blood exploded all over the restaurant and some of it got all over her clothes, face and hair.

The hole in her stomach always remained after a scream like that. The feeling never got better despite how much time she had been doing it. It affected all mortals around her and it caused harm even when it was not meant to. Over the years, she started preferring other methods over her deadly scream. Guns, knives, her superhuman strength...

Five repeated in the diner.

"Record time." He hummed. "As usual. Good job." He leaned down and pulled a knife out of a man's jacket. "I really need to start wearing those earbuds again, huh? Just like old times."

Rebecca blankly stared at him while he was recalling a memory she forgot about a long time ago. He sat back on the counter as if there weren't four headless bodies scattered around the diner.

"I'm gonna go. I don't want to be here when the police──" She cut herself off and her eyes comically widened when Five used the knife to start cutting his forearm open. "Five, what the fuck are you doing?"

Blood started coming out of his forearm and he stuck his fingers into the opening. Rebecca gasped and looked away. She could smell the blood from the other side of the diner and it made her head spin. He pulled the bullet out and lowered the sleeve of his uniform.

"Are we going to get going?" Five flashed her a small smirk and made his way to the door where she was still standing frozen in shock.

"I should've let them kill you." Rebecca scoffed and turned around to head back to the Academy. He let out a dramatic sigh and followed her down the dark alley.

"A young girl really shouldn't be walking down a dark road alone this late. Somebody could try and hurt you." He pointed out.

"And I could bite their head off." Rebecca shot back. "Who do you think would win that fight?"

"I think you're too sure of yourself."

"Oh, fuck off, Five." She snapped and glared at him. "You don't know anything about me anymore."

"You're so cold now." Five muttered while staring at the side of her face. "The old Becca──"

Rebecca clenched her jaw and cut him off by stopping in her tracks and saying, "The old Becca is gone. Everyone leaving made me this way." She gave him a bitter smile and then continued to march back toward the Academy. "Thanks for that, by the way."

"I wanted to come back!" He shouted after her and teleported in front of her to stop her. "You know that I would never leave you on purpose."

"I don't care. You wanting to come back does not change the fact that I have been completely alone for the past ten years!" She yelled back. Maybe a part of her wanted him to be there just so she could finally take her anger out on somebody. "I became a vampire and I had no ability to start my own life like everybody else because I was stuck in the body of a fifteen year old! Everybody else got their careers and their families while I was stuck in the Academy. I tried to find more kids like us but most of them ended up leaving once they learned to control their powers. Hell, I couldn't even fall in love because nobody wants to be with a girl who is going to be fifteen for the rest of her fucking life." She sniffed and tried to hide the tears begging to escape her eyes. "And now you just had to show back up, didn't you? And a part of me is still wondering if there's a reason we're both stuck in the body of teenagers. A part of me is still wondering if maybe the universe is trying to tell me something..."

Five stared at her in silent shock, not knowing exactly what to tell her. He always had a soft spot for Rebecca. Centuries could go by and he would still be at her beck and call. Still, seeing her angry or sad terrified the shit out of him.

"I'm sorry..." He swallowed. "I never wanted to make you wait so long."

Rebecca let out a humorless laugh. "You didn't make me wait. This is all just a big fucking coincidence, right? Judging by what happened back in that diner, I have no doubt that you will disappear again, anyway. So, I won't get used to you being around." She took a step back. "I'm going on a walk. I'll see you when I see you."

Five watched her turn around and walk away from him. He wrecked his brain for ways to stop her from leaving and then blurted out, "The world is ending in eight days."

She paused and swallowed. What did he even want her to say? What would they even do to stop it? Is that why he came back?

A shaky breath escaped her lips and she did not even dare to turn around when she responded.

"So? Vampires live forever."

a/n: Rebecca's personality does a complete 180 when she sees Five istg

I wanted to point out that rebecca's deadly scream is not the same as the scream she let's out after somebody close to her dies. they fade into each other if she uses it to kill but the scream she let's out when someone dies does not harm anyone
