Heartfelt Departures - 2 (Valentine Day Special Short Story Contest)

SHE looked up from her book when I stopped in front of her.

"How does it look?" I asked her, referring to the damp spot on my jeans. I had just spend ten minutes in the bathroom trying to clean the milk.

"Like you just peed your pants," she answered with an easy shrug.

I raised an eyebrow. "No, it doesn't." But I still looked down nonetheless which caused her to giggle and taking that as a cue, I sat down on the floor beside her.

"So, why are you sitting down here? Chairs aren't good enough for you?"

"I find this position more comfortable for reading," she said, nodding towards the closed novel in her hands.

"Is that so?"

She nodded and we went silent for a while before I spoke again. "I never caught your name."

She scoffed at me. "Well, that's impossible. You can't really catch someone's name."

I rolled my eyes. "Ha-ha. Very witty."

"I know I am," she said with a smug smile. Then, she added, "It's Steph."

"Tyler."

We both shook hands and smiled at one another, my fingers lingering on hers for only a moment longer before I pulled away.

The two hours that followed simply flew by fast without either of us really noticing the time. We talked a lot and I filled her in about how high guys get at bachelor parties and she was thrilled, her brown eyes dancing with excitement. Apparently, she hadn't been to a lot of parties in her life because of her strict parents who watched both their daughters' every moves.

But I found out that she wasn't exactly an angel when she told me about the time, she had snuck out of her house late at night and her wild friends and her had almost gotten themselves thrown out of a bar for getting into a physical fight with the bartender.

"I'm serious," she chuckled as she watched me laugh my head off. "I was really going to knock his head off if my friends hadn't pulled me away."

"Sure, sure," I waved my hand at her, as I struggled to catch my breath.

Her eyes narrowed. "You don't believe me?" Then, with a determined look on her face, she bent down a little and placed her elbow on the cool floor and smirked at me. "How about I prove it to you in an arm-wrestling match?"

"Challenge accepted," I said, as I placed my hand in hers. It was warm despite the freezing weather.

Five minutes later, my ears were red with embarrassment and I scowled as Steph continued to laugh in my face, rubbing it in.

"So tell me, Tyler," she teased me giving me a lopsided grin. "How does it feel like losing to a girl?"

"Sucks," I murmured, but I couldn't help the smile that formed on my face as I watched her laugh. Damn, she is strong. I'll give her that.

In the next hour, we had heated discussions about how Sirius Black was an amazing character and Rowling shouldn't have killed him off. Thankfully, one of the books that I had read included the Harry Potter series but I sided with Lupin instead of Sirius, saying that the poor guy had a child to look after and his death was more tragic but Steph continued to insist that Sirius's death was more sadder.

After that, we made our way to the food court and aside from a loud family we were the only ones there. The rest of the passengers were sound asleep and rightfully so, as it was past one in the morning. We had some vegetable and cheese pizza before Steph too had started to yawn.

At two in the morning, we both fell asleep at the same time leaning against the wall on the floor just where we had been before, with Steph's head on my shoulder.

They didn't have any more rooms to spare since they were all packed but I didn't mind sleeping like this at all.
