Chapter Two
In an unexpected twist of having his father return into his life, David had some suspicion that his return wasn't solely to make a better influence on his son's life - being an adult with a family of his own. To some degree, Lara even looked up to her husband's father as inspiration for her dangerous adventures in uncovering ancient artefacts. But for a man she'd only just met, even she could tell something foul was afoot.
After a long and treacherous journey, David, Lara and Travis had arrived at the Croft Mansion. The adults were gathered in Lara's study, going over notes and research, most of which were regarded to Travis' research on ancient Egypt. With a stroke of luck, they were able to narrow down the location to Washington, D.C., to the Smithsonian.
"... what could they want at a museum?" Lara asked, unsure of what exactly could be sought out by the criminal group they were up against.
"That, my dear, would be a tablet," responded Travis as he waved his hands around in a sophisticated manner. "A very special tablet which belonged to the ancient Pharaoh, Ahkmenrah, younger brother of Kahmunrah the Bloodthirsty - the fifth Pharaoh of Egypt. That tablet is made out of twenty-four-carat gold. Arrived in nineteen fifty-two from the Nile expedition. Very valuable, very... I heard the museum's not hiring any nightguards, so you'll have to dress up as one and steal one of the nightguards' passes to get in. Once we can get in that museum and get our hands on that tablet, then we can find out just why Jessica's father is after the tablet, or what contents lie within."
"How do you know about the tablet, dad?" David inquired.
"Let's just say I've had some experience in that field, once. Hell, I came to know the twenty-fourth president of the United States so well I can tell how he likes his turkey - he doesn't even eat turkey."
Travis broke into hearty laughter at his own joke.
"Anywho... who wants to be a nightguard?"
"Why don't you do it, seeing as how you're so educated in that field? Plus, they won't expect you in your--"
"I'm possessing a dead man, son. Well, not dead-dead, but dead in the eyes to Spencer Reed and his group of Mexican-Russian criminal underworld. I think you should go, son. You read my journal. It has all the information you need on Ahkmenrah, the Grail, the Ark of the Covenant, the whole shebang. It's all real, I tell you. Hell. My pops even got ol' Adolf Hitler's signature on the front page."
David looked over at his wife with raised eyebrows, wondering if she had any objection to fulfilling the role instead of he. But she simply shook her head, believing that he deserved the honour. And so it was settled. David was to head to Washington, D.C. and arrange himself a nightguard pass and uncover the secrets that laid within the Tablet of Ahkmenrah. Right after the meeting was adjourned, Lara and David confined themselves in the kitchen where they discussed his travelling elsewhere.
"You doin' okay, babe?" David said with a casual sweetness.
Lara raised an eyebrow and nodded quickly in response. She noticed a spot of arousal on his face as his eyes didn't dare leave her body. He was so deep in thought it took him a full minute to register her calling his name to get his attention back.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" Lara asked, amusingly.
When he realised how much he'd been staring at her, his cheeks reddened in embarrassment.
"W-Well, just looking at you reminds me of the other reason I fell in love with you."
"Oh? And... what would the other reason be?"
"Simple. You're just so loving and caring and cherishing and so, so incredible in a million different ways; each reason shades in comparison to how much I love you."
The two slowly inched towards one another until they were pressed up against each other. Her hand was gently pressed on his chest as the other touched his cheek. His own hand grabbed the one on his face and gave a few kisses on her palm, on her knuckles and then down her arm, up along her neck to her jawline and then to her lips. She moaned in pleasurable sensation of the kisses he left as well as slight tingles of euphoria.
The first minute of the kiss lasted longer than they hoped, each one made Lara crave more by the minute. Alas, all good things had to come to an end. The belligerent shouting from Travis made the two groan in frustration of their moment being ruined, but not before David made a promise that they would resume their intimate moment upon his return. Right now, David had to settle on saving the world yet again.
