Chapter 5: A Term Which is Subjective

Coffee Shop: Late at Night

Knowing he needs some time to reflect on himself, and to figure out what his next move is going to be, Y/N Turner sits in a coffee shop, reading the book he fetched from the library months ago. The rain outside continues to pour, the visual and the sound of it in the background help him find a little bit of peace, as rare as it is nowadays. The blue lights connected to the window make it stand out in a visual pleasing way, though Y/N has seen enough times that he's gotten used to it. Though that hasn't stopped him from making sure he always takes a seat next to the massive window used to display the inside of the building.

Six Months have passed since Y/N grabbed the Death Note, and he has barely seen any possible evidence of previous keepers. There's that one that attempted to introduce the real world to Shinigamis, but that was disregarded as fantasy. Also, History has a tendency to only explain how many, or who died, to which only the infamous get a cause of death written. Y/N has tried searching for other things that could hint to the actions of the Death Note and its history, but no dice so far.

Well, that is until this night. While studying a Japanese history book, he finds none other that Ryuk's face on one of the warriors as they are impaled by a Katana.  Now, it does look a little more brighter than its counterpart, and the pupils and eye colors are swapped around, but this is definitely the same guy he knows all too well. When he flips another page, he sees another person with the same face, holding up an apple with the obvious intent to eat it, given that expression he has. Looks like he's finally found something interesting.

He's broken out of his personal space however, when someone comes up and sits on the chair in front of him, yes, you heard him right, on the chair. Y/N looks up with a perplexed expression as he sees L from the press conference, putting his feet directly on top the chair instead of letting them dangle or touch the floor like most humans would. As Y/N slowly takes out his earbuds, he notices that he's wearing the same jacket, turtleneck, and all black clothing that hides his physical body besides his forehead and eyes.  "Hello, Y/N." The fellow teenager greets casually, as if he knows him.

Y/N anxiously glances sideways, though he keeps his expression blank as he gets the feeling it'll suit him better when talking to the people that are after Kira. "You're that guy, L, right?" He identifies, giving him an inquisitive look.

"Yeah, well, it's not my real name. But I'm sure you're painfully aware of that." L remarks, scratching his chin. Y/N would hope that's not his actual name, as it would bring up some questions for his parents, and also the fact that stereotypical bullies would milk the ever living hell out of it.

Y/N slowly nods, before a weird silence kicks in. He guesses he's supposed to talk next. "Can I... help you?" He queries, raising an eyebrow at him. He has a few guesses why, but a basic step in playing innocent is playing dumb.

"I just stopped by for a quick chat, if you don't mind." L requests, and Y/N can tell he's fishing for a nervous response in Y/N's body language and words. After all, everyone in Seattle now knows about L.

"Um..." Y/N goes to check his watch, something he bought when he realized how focused he became over the time following the birth of Kira. "Actually, it's almost late, and I should get more before my dad gets worried." He politely tells him, tucking the earbuds in his pocket and closing the book he was reading. Good thing he decided to keep the Death Note in his drawer before he left, all he has inside his backpack right now are school related things or books.

"Your father.... I wonder if it was a difficult decision..... sparing his life." L wonders out-loud, making Y/N slightly pause as he tucks the book in his backpack's biggest pocket. He then sits back up to look at him with a fake perplexed look.

"What the heck are you talking about?"

"Well, you must have known it would implicate you, yet you couldn't bring yourself to do it." L notes, and Y/N's nerve irk as he realizes that L sounds really certain of who the culprit is. Well played, male Kyoko Kirigri, well played. "I'll admit, I always wondered if you had a line. I guess it's fortunate for us. the line you finally decided to draw points so clearly in your direction." He remarks with an amused tone, briefly pointing at Y/N.

"Um, I'm sorry, you think I'm the guy on the news killing people?" Y/N questions, squinting his eyes at him. L doesn't seem to be buying this innocent persona, but that doesn't mean he's going to drop the act so he can give him the tiniest hint of a confession for the court.

"No, I know it." L casually states, 'sitting' himself straight as if boastfully fixing a metaphorical suit, if that counts as sitting straight anyway.

"Well, if you're so sure, why haven't you arrested me?" Y/N queries, humoral extending his wrists for him to slap handcuffs on with a cheeky smirk. "I wouldn't mind if you tossed me in front of a jury, I've read law and my rights."

"Oh, because I don't do check, Y/N. Only checkmate." L answers as he crosses his arms, giving Y/N the clue that he still needs concrete evidence, which he doubts he'll ever find if he has to be honest. "But we'll be there soon enough." L promises, much to Y/N's skepticism. Though he guesses the only way he would be able to prove is by Y/N's own mouth, but he won't let it slip so easily.

"Great, until then, enjoy your time in Seattle." Y/N says as he stands up to leave. Right as he's about to grab his jacket, he looks at the door to spot Ryuk is standing in front of it with his yellow glowing eyes. Y/N mentally curses as he can tell the asshole as deliberately blocked the door, clearly wanting this talk with L to progress further. Thankfully, Y/N comes up with an idea to oblige the Shinigami while getting some info for himself. "Can I ask you something?" He glances down at L, who nods with curious eyes. "How do you think he does it? Kira?" He asks while sitting back down.

"I was hoping you could shed some light on that for me." L replies, giving him a pointed look. "I have a theory, I think that it's some form of remote viewing coupled with maybe some latent psychic ability of some fort. Am I close?"

"I wouldn't know, I'm not a murder expert." Y/N casually replies with a shrug, though mentally, he's smirking as his skepticism is confirmed that L truly has no idea of what his Kira is capable of. "Though, that does sound like a good idea for a supernatural drama show."

"Well, I have several ideas. Eventually you'll tell me which is correct." L states, not affected at all by Y/N poking at him with his sense of humor, though Y/N shouldn't be surprised, he looks like he doesn't humor if it crawled up into his mouth and out his eyeballs.

"You know.... you seem pretty determined to solve this case." Y/N points out, wondering where all of it is coming from. "Why? From my point of view, it looks like he's stopping criminals from hurting other people."

"Because it's an act of vigilantism, Y/N." L states, and Y/N leans it, getting the feeling it's not as simple as that. "Sure, on the surface, a man who say, found his hobbit in killing the homeless, so Kira stops them from taking more lives, but where is he when this happens?" He brings up. "Is he in his home, where he's eventually found by the landlord days later? Or is it in the public park, where both, men, women, and children are watching as someone suddenly covers them in his own brain matter. Do you think people are cheering Kira's name now?" He questions, causing Y/N to almost scoff.

"Accidents have happened in the past, we're in the real world, where tragedies aren't just built up like in every film." Y/N states, not that he doesn't see L's point, but what can he do about that? "We're in a world, where they just happen, just like that." He emphasizes this by snapping his fingers. "At least, they are still alive, not the one facing the barrel of that gun."

"But what about that little girl, who's childhood has now been removed by that 'real world' so early? What about the desperate man who's falling to thievery just because he has a wife and sick daughter at home? Does he deserve such a brutal death?" L counters, as Y/N stares at him with his blank expression, sipping the coffee cup on the side of the table. "The main purpose of Court is two things, the truth, and the discussion of 'does the punishment fit the crime?', the second one Kira seems to be ignoring." He then tells Y/N, a reference to the eighth amendment. The Turner kid is slightly peeved as he's never really resorted to killing thieves yet, just robbers, the two names having a big difference.

"The court isn't always so useful, especially when some criminals fail to get caught while others are simply able to bribe their way out of a sentence, no matter the...." Y/N briefly pauses, not allowing his emotions to be vocal in his words. "....  the clear-cut evidence and witnesses that night. A drunk driver runs over a boy's mom right front of him and his dad, then gets set free thanks to that driver's rich daddy, where's the justice of the court system now?" He questions with both eyebrows raised. "Sometimes.... bad things need to happen to bad people, just so we can finally sleep a little easier."

"Is that the message we should give to America's citizens? Ignore the police and just kill everyone that's doing crime in hope that all of it will go away?" L interrogatingly asks, clearly making it sound like a riot. "Humans aren't perfect, we can't force their darker side out of them."

"It's not about forcing them to stop, it's about giving hope." Y/N states, giving L a red-filled glare. "Hope, that there is some justice in this corrupted world filled with the opposite." He finishes with venom in his tone. He then leans back in his chair, getting himself back into calm. "At least..... that's how I see Kira. I don't personally know him."

"How passionate you are, Y/N." L comments after a brief moment of silence, looking him up and down as if examining for something. "I expected such words coming from someone who has the perfect motive, like losing their mother to Antony Skomal, a man people though was untouchable, I wonder..... how proud would Mrs. Turner or Sarah be of you?"

L's sentence is almost cut off when Y/N's arm abruptly sweeps over the entire table, causing all of its contents to crash onto the floor with a loud clink and thud. Everyone else in the coffee table jumps as they glance over, all while Y/N is then taking a deep breath through his nose. "I'm sorry, I guess I'm a little slippery." He then apologizes in a low voice, putting on a fake smile. L doesn't react at all to his sudden burst of anger however, simply using it as mental proof that he's got the right person.

"Y/N, let me put this in terms your more familiar with." L suggests as he seemingly prepares for another question that could start another debate. "A man kills four-hundred people, he tells us that it's complicated, that he's misunderstood. Do you think Kira would hear his excuses or walk him off a bridge?" He queries.

"You think your better than him? Than Kira?" Y/N questions with a face that looks he's judging his life decisions by ten-fold. "Sounds like you and him.... are the same, you both want justice, and you're willing to kill to get it."

"No, I do not kill, Y/N. I don't even carry a gun, it's distracting." L insists, putting his hands up over himself in protest. "What I do is bring people to justice. But the form it takes is their own making, a consequence of their actions, not mine." He states, Y/N knows that Antony Skomal would say differently. "You're the one that flew into the sun, I'm just here to make sure you actually burn."

Wow.... Y/N has to admit, that's the most entertaining speech/monologue he's heard in a long time, much better than whatever movie writer could make. His blank expression purposefully cracks as Y/N lets a small smirk creep onto his face, his face slightly lowered so it his eyes are shadowed by his forehead. "Well, if that's how it has to be."

"It is, Y/N, you know that as well as I do, there are no draws in this game." L makes it clear, looking down into Y/N's pupils before standing himself up with a hop, back onto the floor. "I was born to become one thing, Justice. I'll see you again very soon." He promises before leaving the coffee shop, and as Y/N watches, he sees that Ryuk is no longer there. His smirk never leaves his face as he realizes that he's now engaged in a conflict that he can't simply walk away from. It won't be enough to simply clear his name, and whatever has to happen, Y/N is certain of one sure thing.

L is going down.

Turner Residence:

Since he never brought an umbrella, Y/N has had to use his backpack once again to block out the rain from pouring on him, at least until he gets to his house. He should probably find a way to reward such a faithful companion for enduring the rain drops every time this happens, he'll figure something out.

When he finally gets there, he finds Mia Sutton sitting on his front porch, quickly looking up at him when he opens the wooden fence gate. She, apparently, doesn't care about the rain as much, as she seems have been showering in it the entire time, she was probably waiting for him. When both of them now face each other, there's a painful silence as Y/N just stares at her with a blank expression. "Y/N." Mia ushers his name, seemingly feeling anxious under his gaze. He doesn't want to lash out at her again, but he the anger is still there, so he just walks past her up the stairs. "Y/N, wait-"

"It was my dad, Mia." Y/N simply tells her, hoping she realizes that anyone would betray their code to save someone like that, their family.

"If I could take it back, I would." Mia pleadingly preaches to him as he's going up the stairs, breezing past her. "I promise, I was just scared." She continues, but that last line doesn't really seem to be helping her case.

"No, Mia. You wanted to stay in power." Y/N retorts, snapping his head around to face her. "Only problem is, we're not Kira, okay? We can fucking die, or go to jail, and get put in the chair, and then we die." He emphasizes, and judging by the look on Mia's face, she already knew that, which probably explains a lot.

"You think I don't know that? The one time, I finally had some purpose in my life, it put America's entire government on our asses. I know that has to be making you paranoid as well." Mia mentions, giving him a knowing look. She's right on the money, even if Y/N doesn't want to admit it. Maybe he's got some arrogance in him as well.

"Then, I'm sorry, but you shouldn't have gotten involved." Y/N regretfully says to her, it hurts himself to say it, but he knows that all the trouble and conflict they've got into was all because of him. Antony Skomal, Sarah leaving, Kenny's harassment of others, it was all life getting back at him for screaming into its face of why his mom had to die. "I'm a bad omen, Mia, you shouldn't have met me."

Mia can't help but seem to giggle at this. "I'm a fucking cheerleader, Y/N. Nothing I do as ever mattered until I met you. So maybe you're right, and this whole mess falls on one of us, but the truth is, I don't give a shit." She tells him, and part that makes Y/N even more worried for her. "I made a mistake. If I could take it back, I would. I just.... I wasn't ready to lose everything we created."

Y/N rolls his tongue, looking into her eyes for any sign of genuine. Maybe the rain's too heavy for him to see correctly, maybe it's too dark, or maybe he's still blinded by his lack of a temper, but he can't find it in him to face her. He turns back and continues walking up the steps. "I love you." Mia then says to him, hoping it would mean something. Y/N briefly pauses for a split second and she notices. "I love you."

He slowly turns around, his expression may seem like it's still blank at first, but Mia is able to read it this time, extremely conflicted. "I want to believe you Mia, I really do. You helped me feel something the entire world seemed to have tried keeping from me." He tells her earnestly. "But tell me, was it actually meeting me, or meeting the Death Note?" He asks before turning and stepping inside his house, leaving Mia in the pouring, cold rain.

Now there's a question she was afraid to confront.

_______________________________________________

In his room, despite what's going on in his personal life, Y/N Turner still has to come up with his next plan. The plan in which to take down L before he finds a way to put him in bars, and possibly, stop Kira as well. He's already inspired so much hope, so much fear in the bad guys of this world, that he's not going to let some ignorant detective throw him in the slammer for something like 'Vigilantism'.

He's got the face, now all he needs is a name, which he can tell right away that something like that won't be as easy this time around. "Look at you, so desperate for survival, you'd be willing to kill a helpless little boy." Y/N hears Ryuk cackle behind him. "You really want to make sure you stay a free man, huh?"

"It's not about prison, it's about my legacy." Y/N responds, putting a hand to his chin as he brainstorms solutions. "L clearly hasn't gone what I went through, and he seems particularly stubborn in putting people like me in cuffs, so I'm gonna have to stop him."

"I see..." Ryuk mumbles, chewing on a apple before tossing it onto the floor, once again leaving Y/N to clean it up later. He's gonna have to find a way to start charging this guy if he's going to be so neglect about something as simple as the trash can, though he doesn't know yet on what a Shinigami can actually pay for.

From what he's seen so far, L's identity must have been kept secret for as long as he was probably born, meaning he'll have to find another workaround to grab it. He has to have something though, a teenager becoming an independent investigator means that only something in his past can give him the answer. That's when he remembers what his dad said.

L has a handler named Watari. Only problem is, he also said that his card has no last name on it, nor does he seem to ever have his mentioned. So first step would most likely be to find Watari's real name, which might be easier to find since he seems to handle all the traveling, supplying and such, meaning that his should have an easier chance of slipping somewhere.

Now, how is he going to get it?

Meanwhile:

L has now finally started to get some more sleep, knowing he'll need it before whatever comes next. Y/N will clearly be planning for ways to make sure he doesn't get in his way, so he needs to make sure he's in strong thought to get the stronger hand against him. He's finally found Kira, now he needs to connect him and Y/N Turner to finally put an end to his mass genocide.

However, there are others he hasn't considered yet, a figure looms behind one of the windows leading to the fire escape ladders of the place he resides in. The rain splashing on the window makes them harder to see, but they don't exactly need to worry about that anyway, as L is still asleep, and the rest of lights have mostly shut off for the night. Looks like they've arrived at the perfect opportunity for their bold attempt at breaking in to an investigator's own temporary home.

They mess with the door for a little bit before getting it unlocked, before opening it, and very slowly crawls their legs inside, onto the carpet floor. After closing the window again so the loud rain can become muffled again, they then pussyfoot around towards L's room, where they notice him on the sofa, sleeping like a baby.

Getting the hint that he's most likely a heavy sleeper, just by the way he's barely reacted by the door creaking and rain's audio switching, they casually go through his room, searching for anything that could hint for a name. During which, their foot pushes through a plastic wrapper, and then accidentally stops some hard candy, causing them to wince. But L still doesn't move an inch, so the intruder goes as they please.

Sadly, and frustratingly, there doesn't seem to be jack in his room, indicating of a real name. Everything on the computer just still identifies him as L, the papers are mostly just evidence, so they can't help, and the boy doesn't seem to have any ID at all. They mentally swear before remembering that he's not the only one that lives here.

They slowly step out of the room, closing the door, before turning towards the door leading to the actual bedroom. Upon getting closer, they notices that there's still a slightly dimmed light still on inside. So, crossing her fingers that this isn't a stupid move, they put their hand on the knob, very slowly twisting and opening it where they see that an Asian adult is fast asleep in his bed. Good, this has to be the person that checked in to this place. But, let's start with the obvious first. They sneak around, going through the drawers and the man's bag, anxiously glancing at him each time to make sure they haven't woken him up yet. Thankfully, one bag has, containing some type of ID that was made before he got his codename, has given them something they can hopefully use.

They zip up the back, step out the door, back to the window, where they exit out the way they came from, stealing only a little ID for their troubles. After going down the fire escape ladders, hopping down back into the alley with a thud, they take of their ski-mask and hoodie, reshaping their hoodie in hopes of making it look a little more casual.

Mia Sutton glance back at the expensive apartment before walking back down the sidewalk, and back into the public eye, might proud of her work. She always was good at getting into place she wasn't allowed.

Now, she should give Y/N the night before letting him know what she's found.

Seattle High: The Next Morning

Y/N Turner knew that he wasn't really in a good mood to go find Watari's name at the moment, and so gave himself a much-needed sleep so he could start figuring it out the next day. It's almost that Winter Dance thingy, and he wonders if he's gonna have any time to actually give a crap about going. Heck, maybe that's when all of this Kira vs Task Force stuff will end.

During lunch period, he's been almost ignoring his self-made food in a attempt to find more loopholes in the Death Note rules, or a way to trick the Task Force. A lot of the newer agents, assuming there are new ones, have most likely stayed in the complete shadows until a protection against Kira is confirmed. Sadly, if all of them started wearing a turtleneck, they would probably get the police called on them, so thankfully for Y/N, that's out the window for them.

"I'm telling you, there's no way I'm able to pump out an essay like this overnight." Tyler vents to Y/N as he casually eats, though briefly pauses upon seeing how distracted he is by.... something. "Hey, bro, you good?"

"What?" Y/N quickly blinks back down to earth. "Yeah, yeah, I'm fine. Just thinking." He tells him as he takes a potato chip and eats it. Tyler slightly squints at him however, not so convinced as he's noticed that he's never been seen with his girlfriend today.

"You sure? You've staring into space during the entirety of Science class yesterday." Tyler points out, giving him a look that lets Y/N know that he isn't dumb, and has noticed his weird behavior recently. "Dude, you know if something's happening, I'm practically a vent vacuum you can shout in."

That's.... actually nice, really, Y/N means it. Some people may hate hearing the same thing along the lines of 'I'm here if you want to talk', or are just scared to actually take them up on their offer, but Y/N recognizes it for what it is. Sadly, Y/N's second life kind of permits him to not tell anybody else a word about the slightest thing related to Kira, besides gossip.

He opens his mouth as he considers his next words before a ding from his phone causes him to briefly glance at it. He quickly notices Mia name on the contact name and instead gives the short text message a quick read.

^-^ Mia ^-^: To your left, the small tables.

Y/N glances up and sees Mia in one of the circular tall, side tables next to the walls. She does only glances at him, but he can tell that whatever it is, it must mean something important, especially if she's not with her fellow cheerleaders as they make fake chit-chat like usual. "I'll be right back." He quickly tells Tyler before grabbing his stuff and moving over before his friend can question what's going on.

With a blank and somewhat painfully awkward expression, he briefly stands in front of the table as Mia looks up to acknowledge him with a hesitant smile. "Hey...." She quietly says, and that only makes Y/N feel more guilty. "Look, I know that-"

"Can I start first?" Y/N pleadingly requests as he quickly drops his back and sits down in front of her. He doesn't really wait for a nod or yes and goes on anyway. "Look, I still didn't like the fact that you literally tried to kill my dad right in front of me, but you were scared, I get that, and so was I when I decided to agree killing all of those agents." Y/N begins, and Mia looks like she'll be surprised if what comes out of his mouth next is what she suspects. "But, that doesn't give me a right to take it all out on you, despite whatever you do, you don't deserved to be yelled at like that. And.... I'm really sorry."

Mia slowly nods as she sheepishly glances down. "You were right... I let the power of the Death Note get to my head." She then tells him, and Y/N looks at her intently to listen. "My entire life..... it felt like everything was decided for me. My mom insisted I try cheerleading, where to walk and not walk to avoid Kenny, and my dad even, 'helped' me decide which clothes to as wear as to not get picked on by the mean girls again." She bitterly vents. "So when I finally touched something so powerful, you got to decide who lives and who dies, it made me feel better. And I would give anything to make sure that 'Task Force' never discovered us." She finally lets the words out, and Y/N nods, finding something like that very believable. "I know this is gonna sound cheesy because I practically begged it to you yesterday, but...." She then puts her hands over his. "I love you."

Yeah, that does feel a little weird, but Y/N swallows the anxiety part of it and grips her palms. "I love you too." He tells her, and sees her emit something that looks to be a genuine smile. Wow, why does it feel like it's been too long sicne he's seen that?"

"Um.... anyway, there's another reason why I wanted to talk to you." Mia then hesitantly says as she glances around before leaning in so she can talk in a quieter voice while making it seem like a lovey-dovey moment. "I know of a way for us to stop L." She whispers. Y/N nods, before he too glances around the room before giving her some brief instructions.

"Same place, tonight."

_____________________________________________________________

Turner Residence:

Y/N Turner and Mia Sutton sit in front of the laptop on the former's desk, now having the time to make their most risky chess move yet. No, this isn't just another move, it's the second to last movie, the piece that will give them their ultimate checkmate, should their opponent not catch on to their strategy. If their white Kira wins, then the legacy of Hope, Fear, and Justice becomes eternal, if black L wins, then the his legacy which probably operates under the same words will succeed. However, it's the time to conclude which version is the correct one.

"Watari, if anybody knows for knows how to figure out what L's name is, it's him." Y/N states out-loud, as they both stare at a media photo of the guy. Unlike the man he takes care of, Watari has no problem hiding his face.  Two glance at each other before sharing a brief nod, knowing what needs to be done. "Alright..." Y/N then takes out the Death Note, sets it on the desk in front of him as he prepares to once again, deliver a very long detailed sentence. He can't afford to mess it up as in the Death Note, every detail matters.

Quillsh Wammy becomes obsessed with revealing the true identity of the detective known as 'L.' For the next 48 hours, he will cease all communication with the outside world, except to update what he learns to the number 206-555-0166. At 7:00 p.m, on October 12th, he is murdered by a third party.

"Ah.... someone your opponent deeply cares about. Careful it doesn't put in front of a barrel, I've seen how emotional humans are." Ryuk playfully warns, seemingly amused as he sees what his plan is.

"Okay, so... this is going to sound bitter on my part." Mia begins, only getting silence while Y/N was listening to Ryuk. "But we went from, 'let's kill the agents' to, 'don't kill my dad' to, 'let's kill our opponent's handler'?" She queries, giving him a puzzled expression that begs for her to give her something to understand.

"Actually, there's a way to spare him while also pouring mud all over our tracks." Y/N pridefully tells her as he goes back to the rule pages. "Rule eighty-nine says, 'If the person who writes a name destroys its page, prior to the death being carried out, the target will be spared'. So if I burn Watari's page before October 12th at 7:00 p.m... then not only will nothing bad happen to him, but any reaction from the Task Force while he's M.I.A will only make them look crazy, assuming they don't know about the Death Note and its rules." He states with a smirk.

"Only one name can be removed from the Death Note by burning it, per keeper, get this one wrong, you won't get another chance." Ryuk then informs Y/N, who doesn't visibly react while he watches Mia go through the plan in her head.

"What about-"

Before Mia can get three words in, Y/N's phone starts ringing from an unknown number. However, they don't really care for obvious reasons and its owner immediately picks it up to answer. "Hello?" Y/N says as he hears a very weird growl from Ryuk which he tries to ignore.

"My name is Quillish Wammy, this information is not known to me." Y/N hears his own target, Watari, talking to him through the phone, which feels really weird on so many levels. The way he speaks.... it's like hearing someone who calmly knows that they're going leave the planet they walk on, like someone ready to take their own life.

"Uh, what do you mean by that?" Y/N queries as he tries to put his blank expression and tone back on, ignoring the weirdness of the whole conversation.

"I took responsibility for L only after he left the St.Martian's orphanage in Montauk, where he was one of the Rochester wards." Watari explains, the title sounds like something Y/N should know going forward.

"What is a Rochester ward?" Y/N asks Watari, wondering if he could use this information to shed some light on this whole independent detective agency. After all, he always felt it wasn't just a two-person organization.

"Theye were orphans trained since childhood to become the greatest detectives the world has ever seen." Watari tells him, which makes Y/N and Mia start to feel disturbed as it makes L look like a trained experiment, or weapon.

"Are you being serious? This was a greenlighted operation?"

"Yes. For their first test, the wards were placed in a conditioning vault. Those who retained their sanity after seven months were initiated into the program." Watari explains, which makes Y/N feel even worse. "L joined at six, the youngest candidate ever."

"Okay, but what was his name? What was his name before being put in the vault? He had to have had a biological name, right?" Y/N impatiently asks the very important question as it now feels like finding such a thing is next to impossible.

"That name exists now only in their records." Watari answers, and Y/N almost brights up and he feels his luck starting to turn around. He's got the lead he's looking for, now he, or more specifically someone he's controlling, needs to chase and grab it before L puts his name a different kind of book, on a prison log, if that's a thing.

"Okay, that's great." Y/N practically slams his fist on the table in anxiousness as he stands up so he can pace around his room to keep it contained. "Watari, you need to go there right now and fetch that name."

"I should like to rest first. Sleep is key to strong thought."

"No, you don't have time to sleep or waste any other time. You have forty-eight hours to get a name." Y/N quickly states, knowing the Death Note will help him encourage this guy into staying on track.

"What happens in forty-eight hours?" Watari queries, which makes it get right back to weird and awkward again. Y/N glances at Mia and the Death Note as he wonders if influenced targets feel hesitation as they do tasks before death.

"Doesn't matter, you need to go right now." Y/N strongly encourages, gripping the phone tight in his hands. He doubts the guy needs rest anyway, since the Death Note's effects will hopefully keep him in shape before his time's up.

"I will go." Watari says to him before hanging up the phone. Y/N doesn't see it, but on the other side of the call, Watari's body slowly starts to change. There's almost like a whisper in his ear as his eyes seem to change, the dark pupils in the middle start growing bigger, in spite of the light switch he turned on. They then pretty much cover Watari's vision completely, the Death Note is now fully in control.

Back to Y/N and Mia, they share a look with each other as they now know that they are now forced to wait while their subject goes through on his mission to discover L's name. "I'll go buy a lighter guaranteed to burn paper, when we're ready." Mia tells Y/N, who gives a grateful nod.

Now it's time for the painful waiting.....

The Next Morning:

L has now gone through more dirt than a worm has crawled through, more focused to exposed Y/N has Kira than ever before. However, as he lays in the safehouse, he realizes that something's not right. His handler still hasn't arrived yet.

When he decided to head back to their shared apartment room, he finds that the place is bare empty. No sound, no one in the bed, no ice cream being made in the kitchen, nothing. Then, he finds that he left his sleeping mask on his bed. Kira.... he's behind this. L grips his fist hard, the emotions he was trained to stall have now been granted more ground to plant their roots.

It's now become personal.
