Chapter 3: To Deliver an Announcement

Turner Residence: Morning

Y/N Turner has felt something he never thought he would feel in a long time, a purpose in his life. Though, you probably already know that, he's now Kira after all. Kira, the being that resembles the Death Gods that Y/N's heard from Ryuk. It has inspired not only fear in the rotten criminals of the world, but hope in the victims who were originally crushed under the formers' bootheel.

It felt good, thought it hasn't brought of some concerns after Kira become a known icon. The police, FBI, and other investigation governments are one thing, but Y/N feels more concerned about Ryuk. Everything's been find with him so far, watching a commenting on what Y/N decides to do with the Death Note so casually, it makes the boy wonder what exactly that warning in the book was all about. Is Y/N supposed to feel manipulated? Because he feels pretty in control of his actions. Is there a rule that hints at something Y/N hasn't figured out yet? Maybe, but he's been reading the rules back and forth and making sure they stay pictured in his mind.

Whatever it is, now's not the time to think about that, as a new potential problem comes up on the horizon while Y/N Turner is eating his breakfast.

"Investigation, since when? And why are just telling me this now?" Y/N dryly questions his dad with a slightly annoyed tone he tries to mask. As hinted at earlier, the Kira situation has become more concerning for the very controlling side of the police force, that most of the world's governments, including America, have begun assembling some kind of task force against Kira himself. Sorry woke culture, but Y/N and Mia have gone with male pronouns.

"Because I just got added last week." James replies as he cleans up his own plate and silverware, needing to leave much earlier than Y/N does. "Not knowing you'd have this sort of calm and thoughtful response, I can't imagine why I didn't bring it up sooner." He sarcastically adds, guess Y/N deserves that.

"What part of terrorists killing each other and criminals turning themselves in bothers you, dad?" Y/N queries, obviously challenging the mind of a cop that, to his mental disappointment, doesn't share the views of what Kira stands for with the 70%.

"Why exactly are they doing that, son?" James responds with a question of his own while he fills up his personal coffee cup, clearly trying to set up whatever his statement's going to be.

"They're doing it because of Kira." Y/N easily answers as he twirls the spoon in his hands.

"Right, and who is that?" James questions as he sets the coffee cup on the table so he can put on his jacket, looking like a typical detective that you'd see in most cop movies and shows. "How does Kira get to decide who lives and dies, who's guilty and innocent? Is there a complaints department if I don't like one of Kira's decisions? Or would complaining get me put on Kira's list?"

"Is that what everyone at the station thinks?" Y/N asks, the last bit of James's sentence causes him to grip his spoon. The idea of him killing someone else, especially his dad, just because they don't agree with what he's doing almost ticks him off. He may have become a lot of things when he picked up the Death Note, but a dictator will not be one of them.

"Well, it's safe to say some people are ahead of the curve." James replies, hinting that there might be some kind of civil war going on with the Seattle Police. "Hey, how do I look?" He then asks, the conversation moving on to the aspects of life.

"Good." Y/N nods, his face not showing the amused boy that just had his father actually ask him the same things that his mom would usually have the job of commenting on. Life really has gotten better.

"All right, see you this afternoon." James informs him like he usually does before heading out with his cup of joe. Y/N looks down at his cereal, asking his reflection if he's thinking the same thing, and the reflection nods.

This Kira investigation might prove to be a problem.....

Seattle Police Department:

When James walks inside with his suitcase and coffee, he comes upon an disturbance in the police's own building. About a dozen cops are now escorting their own downstairs, in cuffs. The detective watches the arrested officers, one of which struggles against Richards as he forces him against the wall in order to get the restraints on him, with a raised brow.

"Take a look for yourself, chief." Officer Richards suggests upon noticing James's arrival, nodding his head upstairs before dealing with the rouge policeman. James curiously heads upstairs and upon opening the 'special investigations' room, which is now his new personal office, he discovers the problem.

The place has now been trashed, like a kidnapping or burglary has taken place. But one quick scan of the room shows that both aren't the case, has not only do files litter the room, the items on his desk scattered everywhere, but the red marker written one of his boards reading, 'EAT SHIT!' Wow, his own opinion turned half of his department into petty teenagers.

Before he can even think about how the heck he's gonna clean it up, his cell phone rings and he looks to see a call from one of his staff. "Turner." He professionally greets as always, stepping over and leaning on the slight balcony overlooking the first floor below him.

"Just got a call from the FBI. Apparently, they got someone who wants to speak with you." The guy on the other end informs him, the FBI being the ones who are spearheading this new operation against Kira.

"Oh, yeah? Who's that?"

"They're not really saying. Just said he's helped them out before and he's got a theory on the Kira situation." The guy replies, getting James's attention. He wonders why the guy wants to speak to him of all people, the task force's current rookie.

"I just got the case, what does he want with me?" James asks him. Last he checked, Kira was operating somewhere in Japan before he was recruited, so asking for someone in American, Seattle makes him curious.

"I have no idea." The guy tells him honestly, probably shrugging too. "They said he's a little different. In fact, they'll probably send a representative-

"Detective Turner?" A man calls his name half-way during the caller's sentence. James turns to see an Asian man with a short goatee and very formal attire, including the top hot which hides a seemably lack of hair. "I am to meet with Detective Turner, local head of the Kira investigation, in his office at nine A.M."

"I'll call you back." James dismisses the man on the phone before hanging up, facing the man who stands in front of him. "What can I do for you?" He asks the stranger, who he can't help but noticing standing in a way that doesn't look very supportive for his back, in his opinion anyway.

"I am Watari." The man introduces himself, handing the detective a card that only has his name on it. It has no last name, hinting to James that this 'Watari' must be some kind of alias the man goes by. "Your fellow officers did that?" He queries, noticing the damage in the office next to them.

"Cops don't like it when you go after other cops, but apparently, they hate it when you go after their god." James remarks, mentally throwing his hands up. I guess when it comes to the 'God of Death and Justice', the first amendment is thrown out the window.

"They support Kira?"

"Half of them, at the very least. Kira's doing away with the 'most wanted' list, these guys want to throw him a parade." James explains, though he's sure the guy already knows that. "But now that rumor has it Kira's a cop, it's in my world."

"The idea that Kira is associated with law enforcement is not a rumor." The man states, prompting James to turn to him with a curious look. "It is a fact, uncovered by the individual I work with."

"Oh yeah, and who's that?"

"He goes by the letter 'L.' " Watari tells the detective, who recognizes the name, or letter, rather easily. The famous enigmatic investigator who's solved crimes in only one day when others do in five weeks. He was the criminal's original boogieman until the new mysterious, more brutal figure showed up.

"L is real?" James questions with a little bit of surprise. The fact he never heard of the person's involvement in the case until now made him first think that the guy was just a myth, if he can be honest.

"You're familiar?"

"Yeah, I hear things." James admits with a shrug. "That giant smuggling ring in Eastern Europe, practically handed to police on a platter." He mentions, personally glad to hear that he's been proven wrong. A person like that sounds like the only person to bring someone like Kira in alive without getting his head runover by an oncoming motorcycle, however Kira manages to do it.

"L would like to speak with you regarding the Kira investigation." Watari tells him, which of course he's managed to guess so far, if he's decided to take his mission in Seattle.

"Okay, when?" James asks with a accepting shrug.

"Right now." Watari replies, even though James sees no other men with him. Instead, the stranger casually walks into the detective's office without asking and unzips their briefcase where they then pull out a very advanced looking laptop and clearing a part of the desk where it sets it down. Watari then turns to James, nodding to the chair as if asking for him to sit. James mentally shrugs and obliges, as Watari opens the laptop and switches it on, causing a green light to flick on as a bunch of stuff in technology language comes on screen before a wallpaper with the letter L in cursive pops up on the screen.

"Hmm, Detective Turner." A young male's voice emits from the laptop apparently seeing him despite James not seeing the voice. Is this really supposed to be L? And why does he sound like his son's age?

"What is this?" James turns to Watari with a questioning look, wondering why this secret agency is hiring kids to do their detective work. At least, that's what it sounds like from his end. Whoever this is apparently doesn't like to show their face to the rest of the world.

"A one-time offer." The boy replies, turning James's attention back to the screen. "I'd like to assist you in the capture of Kira." He states, though the detective has still not exactly been told why yet.

"Why me? The FBi, CIA have hundreds of men on this." James asks the important question, bringing up the people much higher than him and how they've managed to come up with about jack and piss.

"I've been in communication with the Interpool and FBI, I believe you have something they do not." L claims, which perplexes the detective. If he had something better than the feds, than he should have been put in protection of the president by now. "An in-depth understanding of potential suspects." L then specifies, which only confuses James even more.

"Why would I have a better understanding?" James questions, is this boy implying what he thinks he is?

"The FBI thinks the killer is operating out of Japan." L mentions the obvious, this assumption came from the name 'Kira', which many easily translated from the country's language. "However, the name, Kira, is an intentional misdirection. He wants us to believe that he's Japanese, operating a half a world away." There's a brief pause as James hears clattering from the other end. "He's not. Kira's in Seattle." L then states, which definitely surprises James, although that does explain the surprise visit.

"Shall we help one another?

Seattle Highschool:

Despite the arrival of Kira, the status quo of the school hasn't changed. Which is just fine by Y/N, he doesn't want Earth to turn into some Star Wars, Galactic Empire, or something like that. There was actually this one time, He, Mia, and Tyler spotted some Kira praise line on one of the school's walls, though that just earned everyone involved an instant detention and maybe some law trouble for vandalism.

But, anyway, the Winter Dance is coming up, which is evident by the custom written posters on the walls. Some even put ice-themed decorations for some reason, which Y/N notices a couple of the students dunking a few to the floor like basketballs. What exactly is the joke in that? He has no idea.

"You know what I think? I think Mr. Granger's gotten bitter because of everyone trying to find a connection to Kira in his classroom." Tyler rants to Y/N. The poor teach has history, and now people keep trying to connect incidents and suicides as Kira's work. One of the minor cons of Y/N's plan to spread a little hope in the world.

"I know, it's like accidents don't exist anymore, it's all Kira this, and Kira that." Y/N comments with a nod of his head, wondering if it might reach to a point where the name he invented starts getting old..... nah, who is he kidding?

Afterwards, he finds himself in one of those classes with an unnecessary amount of PCs that are never accurate to the numbers students in said classroom. The assignment on the screen could bore him to tears, literally, as a yawn causes some to fall out of his eyebrows. Thankfully, he's pulled out of it when a paper ball falls onto his desk, barely avoiding his face.

He looks over to where it came from and sees Mia nodding her head over, to which Y/N to glance around, see that the teacher is out of the room at the moment, and slides his seat over to her. On her screen is a grey color themed website with a very interesting name. "Justice for the Wicked?" He reads it out-loud, looking at Mia curiously. "What is this?"

"It's a site for Kira worshippers, they put up names of all the people that deserve to die." Mia explains with a prideful smirk, causing Y/N to hum as he does that blank, thinking expression she knows all too well. "Rapists, pedophiles, human trafficking, murder." She clicks on one of the requests. "This guy killed four people in a house fire."

Y/N's face scrunches up and his eyes squint. "Okay... but how do we know it's an honest claim?" He then questions, feeling uncertain by the idea. Mia turns to him with a perplexed look, apparently not getting his point yet.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean, like, what if somebody murdered a guy and then posts some fall guy's name on here to cover their tracks? I mean, some of these pictures include easy-to-see photoshop." Y/N brings up, glancing at the supposed wanted picture of the guy whose prison background is a painfully obvious green screen. "Or, maybe, what if somebody fucked your girlfriend and you put him on the list because you just want to kill him?"

"Hmm...." Mia mumbles to herself, before giving Y/N an inciting look that he easily notices. "Well..... what would you do if some random guy fucked me?" She playfully asks in a suggestive tone, causing Y/N to think that she's gotten distracted again.

"Oh, I would kill both of you." Y/N humorously answers, giving her a crazy grin which actually manages to creep Mia out a little bit as he chuckles at her reaction. "In all seriousness, It basically my point on why we can't trust all website rumors. It's a crap ton of more background checking we have to do."

"It's not like that. These are real people with real problems, and they've been ignored." Mia states, leaning back into her chair. "They need are help." She reminds him, though it's hard to tell if her persuasion actually worked thanks to Y/N's real blank expression. "Besides, can't we just check it through your dad's computer like we always do?"

"Not possible anymore, after some dust up with his own guys, my dad's office has been stripped clean and his laptop isn't in his room anymore." Y/N shares with her, causing Mia to scrunch her face in confusion. This must be pretty recent if she hasn't heard about it yet. "Now we gotta go back to doing things the hard way."

"Where do you think they moved it?" Mia queries, wondering where this new problem came from. The only thing Y/N can do is shrug however, just as perplexed as she is.

"I have no idea."

????????:

After accepting L's offer, Watari drove him and James over to some kind of secret building disguised as a warehouse. When they walk in, it definitely looks abandoned, however the door on the other side proves to not actually be for more secure storage, rather it's a secret elevator. When the door and shutters open again, James sees a lot more activity, and a lot more formal design.

Evidence boards, side by side with more evidence boards shows that James has entered what must be the Kira Task Force's safehouse in Seattle. While scanning all that this new detective squad has found, along with some of his own, his eye catches a boy in a hoodie sitting next to a table in the square center of the room, humming a song as he reads the folder in his hands. On that table is candy wrappers and pieces which lay all over it, which exactly marks the behavior of a child or a few teenagers. So that confirms his age, which confirms him to be L himself.

As Watari takes off his suit to work on his own desserts on a tray that sits next to the table, James approaches the kid that's called for his help. "Figured you'd be older." James comments, catching L's attention. "And that I'd be able to see more of your face." He adds, noting the black hoodie and mask that the boy wears, concealing his features.

"Yes, well, I find that I'm not in a very trusting mood these days." L replies, which makes sense. Though, James wonders if that's solely because of Kira, or something else. Or heck, maybe he's always hidden his entire identity and is actually always not in a trusting mood. "I took the liberty of moving your evidence to a more secure location." He then informs James of what he already knows.

"Oh I can see that." James sarcastically comments. "Were you gonna let me know, or...?" He questions, though is partly distracted when Watari hands him a green ice cream cone, then walks somewhere else. What is with this agency and sweets and treats? Is this their way of being friendly since their personalities are all stoic?

"Wow, this is very, very impressive, James. Your men must be proud." L comments as the detective then sees that the folder is one of his.

"Ask your partner how my men think about me these days." James remarks as he awkwardly holds the cone in his left hand, causing L to glance up at him. He also notices the weird way the boy sits on the chair, seemingly refusing to let his feet touch the floor. What is also with this agency and treating their muscles and bones weirdly?

"So you did all this yourself?"

"I had a little bit of help from one of my guys but that's it." James admits, thinking of Officer Nate Richards. The rest seemingly attempt to stay out of the little cop drama, but it still affects the station anyhow.

"Impressive none-the-less." L notes before pointing to the couch in front of him. "Please, James, have a seat, rest your glutes." He advices, as James glances at Watari staring blankly at him before deciding to go ahead and sit. What is also with this agency and using phrases like that? "Mm-mmm. You've made two mistakes." L then points out as he places the folder on the table, letting it show a specific part. "This is zero day, Kira's first recorded murders. But, previously, on April 15th, convicted felony James Brode W. Brode had attempted to rob a drug store at gun point and took everyone inside hostage."

"I remember that, you think it was Kira?" James questions, recalling how confused he and Nate was when they were trying to get everyone's story on that whole incident. Now that he thinks about it, it would make sense for an accident as bazar as that to be connected.

"Initial speculation was that his behavior was drug-related, as according to the hostages testifies of his demands. However, lost in the ensuing crash of Kira activities was the fact that Brode's toxicology had come out clean." L reveals to the detective, putting an obvious connection to their target. "In truth, his cries of blame were a result of the Candymen gang who kidnapped his ill daughter one day prior."

"I later learned that day that one of my boys blew him off, thought it was the meth talking." James recalls, not one of his station's best moments. Thankfully, he had convinced the chief to take action after that went down.

"Next piece that connects this puzzle is the fact that the stand-off never made national news, and it was only broadcast on local Seattle stations." L then adds, everything making sense for James Turner.

"So that's how you knew he was here." James notes.

"I infiltrated your network in order to ensure that there hadn't been a data breach. Prior to my access the network was intact." L then tells the detective, grabbing another folder and setting over in front of James.

"Did you just hand me evidence you hacked the Seattle P.D.?" James questions, giving L a look that asks if he as a prison wish. Detective agency or no, he's pretty sure the FBI still has the high-up in this case.

"I handed you evidence that whoever Kira is, they have access to the database from the inside." L tells James, confirming the rumor that's been going around for a long time. Kira's not just a cop, but one of the Seattle's. "Here's a cross-reference list of officers and their access, as well as the dates of Kira activities." L tosses another folder on the table before standing up. "The Federal Administration has agreed to make resources available to us. We can begin seeing who was where and when."

"And what are you gonna do?" James asks as L begins leaving the safehouse, wondering if he's planning to drop more evidence literally on the able.

"I'd like to start by speaking with Kira." L states, causing James to chuckle, almost burst out laughing.

"Sure you are."

________________

Home alone, and now in a little bit of frustration troubles, Y/N contemplates in his room about now having to use that website Mia showed him. With access to the Seattle P.D now cut off, it's now theoretically one of the few ways to get the names of criminals world-wide.  There is no doubt others, though they are a little difficult to find right now.

While idly glancing around, he spots the family photo on his desk, him, his dad, and his mom. A much happier time Y/N didn't know he had, before it was gone. He wonders how she would feel if she figured out what he was doing, would she want him to stop? to put it away? saying that it's close to vigilantism? Or heck, maybe she would actually approve, but he'll never know. It actually reminds him of this weird toy that's still in one of his drawers, he takes it out and winds it up, mom bought it for him, though he can't remember when to be honest. The little thing then starts walking down the desk like it's dancing.

"You've been busy..." Y/N hears Ryuk comment behind him, he turns to face the man he hasn't really seen in a long time. "The entire world has been shaken up by what you did. Some approve, some are scared. But that's what you want, isn't it?" He adds with a low chuckle.

"Something like that." Y/N replies with a shrug, staring back down at the walking toy prancing all over the desk. About five months, and so far, nothing has caused Y/N to grow suspicious of  him. He presumes that if Ryuk will stab him in the back or something, he'll have to wait for it and improvise when it happens.

His thoughts about Ryuk and criminals are interrupted by his phone ringing, Y/N sees it to be Mia's number and casually responds. "Hey." He greets, not knowing what's happening yet, and it's pretty big.

"Y/N, turn on the news." Mia instructs, making it sound urgent. Curious on what's got her so bothered, he grabs the remote on his bed and turns his room's television on where he already left it on the news as part of his new Kira routine.

What he sees is intriguing, and maybe troubling. A young adult, maybe even teenager, wearing a black hoodie and mask stands in front of the press as he speaks to both the reporters and cameras. "The individual known as Kira, as I'm sure you're aware, has taken credit for over four-hundred deaths." The boy on the screen begins, and Y/N notices 'Kira Task Force Press Conference' on the bottom. He mentally curses as this definitely feels like a call-back to his bad feeling when dad revealed it to him. "While we don't know how he kills his victims, we do know how he chooses them. Prior to these deaths, all of the victims have had their identities released to the media. This would suggest that Kira is not some omnipotent force, he's a person.... like you or me. He is also a coward. A child wielding power he does not understand, mistakenly believing in doing so, he's at no risk to himself. He's wrong." The stranger gives his speech, the nickname causes Y/N's blood to boil as he glares at the screen. "Kira, if you're watching this, know that I am coming for you. Unless of course, you'd like to kill me right now.

Y/N grips the phone tight as he then sees that all this guy by offering himself up for death is to prove his point. The lucky bastard's somehow got him right on the money, and right now, he can't do shit, even if he wanted to kill him. Everyone's silent as they wait to see what happens, all while Ryuk is laughing for the time of his life. "Now I'm rooting for this guy." He comments.

"I'm sure he would appreciate that." Y/N acidly tells him with a glare that orders him to shut the fuck up before turning back to the screen. Seems everyone one of those stupid task force whatevers all believe him to be some kind of dictatorship. Well, he even if he knew this guy's name and face, he wouldn't be tricked that easily into using it.

"No?" The boy holds up his hands, knowing that he's got the slight upper hand on him. "Well then, in that case, Kira. I shall be meeting you face-to-face very shortly." He concludes before walking away, not bothering with any kind of questions.

"Who does this guy think he is?" Y/N hears Mia say on the phone, but he just hangs up instead of responding. sets down the phone and remote before rubbing his hands against his face.... before abruptly grabbing the toy and angrily chucking it across the room, letting it break apart on the floor with two thuds.

Ryuk laughs at the sudden burst of rage shown by the kid as he looks ready to kill someone with his bare hands. "He's got you on the ropes." He notes the painfully obvious, only testing Y/N further as he lets out breaths that sound like engines letting out steam. This motherfucker dare use what would have been his willingness to let him live, and painting him as a 'coward'?

Despite these bitter thoughts, Y/N gets himself back into calm. Whoever that was, he had not problem painting himself as a potential target, nor try and threaten the criminal killer Kira himself.

Looks like he was right, he's made some unwelcomed friends.

_____________________________________________

"What the fuck was that?" James questions as he, L, and Watari walk up the station's stairs. He really hopes there was some logic into trying to announce the Task Force's entire operation on the entire media.

"I have a theory." L simply replies, his hood removed as it now shows his short, curly hair. "Kira cannot simply kill by sight alone, he needs a name and a face. Every victim we've seen so far fits this pattern." He mentions, showing off his one advantage against their target.

"So you antagonize him on purpose?" James loudly questions, the last thing he needs is Kira now going after his own unit, which is now largely possible thanks to this new stunt they pulled.

"While withholding my identity from the record." L confirms, not seeing a problem. "Now, we know that he wants to kill me but is unable." He states as James then rolls his eyes.

"What if you're wrong?" James then brings up, causing him and Watari to glance at each other with blank expressions. What is with this agency and such robotic mannerism? Is that what he should be trying?

"Then, James, I'd be dead." L admits as if it's no big deal, confirming to James that he is very, very crazy. "Either way, we'll have gained valuable information." He states, walking up the stairs to go do invent more crazy plays or whatever the heck he is that he does.

"Does he always pull this kind of stuff?" James questions Watari, pointing at the kid who just left. The man just stares at him expressionlessly before following his partner. That's it, he cannot understand these people.

What is with this agency? Period.

(A/N) Slightly shorter chapter than the others, (Maybe.) But this was obviously a big set up to the biggest part of this film. The intelligence duel between L and Light- oh sorry, Y/N. Now comes the part where I try to keep the film's respective runtime while making L and Y/n not behave like idiots like in Netflix's movie.

Anyway, plz vote and comment, and I'll see you in the next one.
