Death March
The faint sound of blaster bolts zooming past his head barely took much of the clone Captain's attention. His eyes were unmistakably glossy as unshed, merciless tears threatened to run a line down his slightly mud covered face. His knees trembled, trying to force him in surrendering and make his legs buckle from underneath him. Everything around him slowed to an unnatural speed as the sight before him continued with no chance of a conquering victory. But victory did not matter to him at this point. The only thing his dull hazel eyes could focus on, to his dismay, was the images of blue and green enery bolts hurdling towards his comrades, his brothers, and hit them square in the chest or head. Their bodies taking a long, agonising plummet to the hard ground. If he squinted to get a sharper view of the fallen, he could faintly make out twitching fingertips. He wanted to scramble over to them, by all means he wanted to, but his legs were frozen rigid.
A B1 battle droid turned 45° degrees north, aiming the barrel of it's E-5 blaster rifle at the clone veteran's amoured chest, it's mindless programming chip telling it to fire at will. A green energy bolt emerged from the rifle's barrel, racing towards the unsuspecting and dazed Captain's heart.
It all felt so surreal to Rex, like just not being able to wake up from a horrifying nightmare. How did it come to all this? A man he knew by heart and trusted with life couldn't be the cause of all this chaos. The blood of his own battalion on his hands? Never! But as much as he tried to convince himself, the doubt grew stronger. For the fact he knew all too well this wasn't his mind abusing him with false scenes. The man he always did look up to, had become a living phobia to the Captain.
The clone Commander let out a harsh battle cry while sprinting forward with his DC-15A blaster rifle clutched tightly in his slightly trembling hands. Clankers fell around him with metallic thuds, as illuminating blue bolts snapped out of his blaster's barrel in a wild frenzy. His slightly scratched and dented armour shone in the variety of bolt colours. The orange seemed to become more of an ugly khaki green as the enemy's fire whizzed passed him. He quickly ducked down behind the fallen, damaged wing of a Star Fighter. Mentally groaning at the sight of a trooper's helmet with a bullet hole through it, he glanced around. He was now a broken spirited man, with heavy guilt weighting on his shoulders. It was a horrible mistake. No clone should ever turn on his general, especially one like General Obi-Wan. The Jedi always had his clone's back in battle, the reason Cody was still breathing. Commander Cody only noticed during this very battle that his General still cared, even if the clone had tried killing him in the first moments of Order 66.
Cody suddenly felt himself being pulled through the air by nothingness. He yelped at the sudden movement, and his eyes widened as a green energy bolt launched through the spot he just stood milliseconds ago. He whipped his head about, searching for the source of the action. His eyes landed on a familiar Saber-swinging figure, who too glanced back at him. Cody stared a second longer as the Jedi soon returned to the battle before him, pure determination evident as his actions were flawless.
Cody shook his head a little at the mere flashback. "I won't let you down now, sir." He mumbled to himself, a new strain in his voice. The one of determination, resembling that of his general. The Commander's eyes dotted around for his next victim made of metal, but suddenly landed on a clone dressed in scratched up armour, the unique blue markings specifying to Cody that it was indeed his best friend and brother, Rex. His eyes widened in horror as just a few meters behind the Captain, a B1 battle droid was preparing it's rifle to dispose of the clone. Cody flung his helmet off and yelled. "Rex! Get out of the way!" But his comrade stood motionless gazing off into all the chaos of war. The clanker's blaster began to gloom an eerie green as the blaster's power source was charging up a shot. Cody's heart dropped to the pit of his stomach as he scrambled to his feet and bolted towards Rex.
Rex found himself just standing there like a coward, his body not responding to the commands his brain shot out to his limbs. A thousand thoughts rushed about in his head as he watched more of his men get gunned down individually, with him powerless to do anything. Something hard collided into his side all of a sudden, sending him to the ground with a heavy thud. Startled into moving his muscles again, the Captain whipped his head around to find the face of his brother before him, an expression twisted with shock and a hint of pain. Rex glanced down at his comrade's chest, and his breath hitched in his throat for a long moment. Cody stood there for a few mere milliseconds more, his watery eyes looking down into Rex's, before his legs gave way underneath him. His body collapsed onto the shocked Captain's, and it took Rex a moment to process what was happening. His mind then snapped back into a state of reality, and he quickly but gently pushed Cody up and turned him over on his back. Rex ripped his helmet off and tossed it aside to get a better view of the damage. The Commander's breath turned into short, ragged gasps as his pulse slowed bit by bit. "No, no! Stay with me Cody! Stay with me!" Rex shouted, his voice cracking. He removed the clone's chest plate with shaky hands and immediately applied pressure to the bloody hole in Cody's chest.
The Commander weakly put his hand on the two pressing down on his chest. "R-Rex, brother I-I'm..d-dying." He gasped as a tear dripped down the side of his cheek. "N-No, you're not. Keep...f-fighting it brother!" Rex pleaded, his own tears streaming down his face. "T-Tell General...K-Kenobi I'm s-sorry...f-for failing h-him." Cody stuttered, desperately trying to force air into his bloody lungs. Every breath became more shallow than the last, his chest refusing to rise and fall any faster. "R-Rex..." He looked up into the Captain's eyes with his hazy ones. "L-Live..t-to fight another...d-day." With that said, Commander Cody's eyes slowy closed, never to be opened again. His hand slipped off Rex's while his chest fell for the last time, his pulse long gone.
Rex sat there looking at his friend's lifeless form, before yelling out. The inner conflict was just unbearable. The words of one of his men crossed into his mind. "Where's the honour in marching to our own deaths?!" Fives' voice rang out, as if he was standing next to the veteran clone. "Y-You were right all along Fives." He mumbled while standing up. "Retreat!" He faintly heard one of the Master Jedi yell. Rex turned around and spot one of the ships the survivors were running to. He threw one last glance at his deceased brother's body, before grabbing his helmet and sprinting off towards the ship. Dodging the last few enery bolts zipping past him, Rex boarded the ship in record time. The ramp closed with a wailing cry, and the ship shakily took off. Rex stumbled about, injured troopers and Jedi dotting all around him. His eyes settled on a figure sitting in an isolated corner, and he trudged over. He seated himself next to the General, pushing down his overwhelming emotions. "Commander Cody sent me to tell you that he's sorry he failed you." Rex said, keeping his act together. General Obi-Wan looked up at the Captain's eyes. "Not him too..." He trailed off, a slight tremble in his voice. Rex looked down at the durasteel under his feet. "I apologise sir, I too, failed him..."
