thirty-six | he told me to

"So...uh...we can see the future," Flynn began awkwardly, rubbing the back of his neck and leaning against the armrest with one elbow, casting a deadly expression over to the other two boys seated next to him as a demand for assistance.

"Really?" Eleanor made sure to add as much sarcasm as she could to the statement, tone practically dripping with the substance as she took a long sip from her mug of tea. Raising both of her eyebrows at them over the rim of the ceramic object before placing it down on the large coffee table in front of her. Making sure to show the boys how she did not use the coaster. She was in a slightly more tolerable mood after the talk with her father. That did not mean, however, that she was exactly ecstatic to be seated solo on a sofa across from the three idiots squished up on the couch across from her, looking very much like three children about to receive a scolding from their mother.

"Well, what do you want to know?" That was from Nate, who had arranged this meeting and was currently seated in the centre of the trio, seeming highly unimpressed when the two idiots beside him took it upon themselves to mimic his question. Possibly for no other reason than to piss him off, but Eleanor could see the way their feet tapped nervously against the carpeted floor.

She shrugged. "Everything you're willing to tell me."

Liam let out a chuckle at that, looking weirdly amused by the serious situation as he stretched out his legs to rest them on the coffee table, settling his arms behind his head. A small smirk pulling up at one corner of his lips. "Well, Skittles, the first thing you should know about us is that we have laws and, ironically enough, the most important law is secrecy. We are never supposed to tell anyone of our abilities unless they are immediate family members, can see the future themselves, or have some other abnormal ability." He paused for a moment, grinning at her almost mockingly as he took a second to stroke his imaginary beard as if in deep thought. He snapped his eyes to hers. "And, would you look at that? You don't fit into any of those categories."

Eleanor rolled her eyes at that, matching his amused grin as she set her head down into her right hand, elbow resting on the arm of the sofa as she raised an eyebrow in the kind of manner that reminded the boys of a teacher completely not believing their claims of honestly having done the homework. "Well, maybe you shouldn't leave random clues about your abilities scattered around the house then, hm?" Her smile grew wider as she surveyed the reactions to her observations. Liam had raised his eyebrows once, before nodding his head in acceptance, Flynn turning his attention to picking one of the threads out of the couch and Nate's eyes narrowing slightly as he stared straight at her. "Not to mention how idiotic it is to call someone, literally telling her that you can see the future."

Nate's eyes widened to the size of saucers, lips parting slightly while his gaze remained rooted to her face as Flynn suddenly yanked the thread so hard that it erupted from its placement in the furniture. Snapping his blue-eyed gaze to her own highly amused one. Liam, however, only pressed his lips together and turned his gaze towards the large bay window situated just behind her.

Eleanor wasn't stupid, she had had her suspicions about the boys even before seeing the post-it notes. Not that the notes hadn't confirmed it, of course. There were events up there that made her heart skip a beat. Her music teacher breaking his leg, the date at the top of the blue paper amounting to about a month before school started. A few things about football matches and what their scores would be. What player would score the goal at exactly what minute in the game. Whether the dance teacher at school was pregnant. Even a reminder that Eleanor was going to get cornered by Brendan in the school corridor, with the words 'intervene' underlined underneath in bold. Her death. Everything was there. And, from there on out, she had known. That not only could they see the future but one of them was almost certainly her death-caller.

"W...what?" It was Flynn who spoke, voice cracking slightly as he said the words, visibly gulping as Eleanor moved her narrowed gaze onto him.

She rolled her eyes so far into the back of her head that, this time, she swore she could see the dark pits of hell that the boys would soon be entering if they didn't come clean with her right this instant. She was tired of all the lies and deception. Although, perhaps she would have been a little more understanding if they hadn't called her to announce her death. Before expecting her to be completely oblivious. "Don't play dumb with me, guys. I've put the dots together. One of you called me to tell me that I was going to die and it was Liam."

The ginger choked on his mug of coffee, the hot liquid burning his tongue as the other two boys turned to glare at him with eyes that blatantly accused him of letting the cat out of the bag, silently begging for him to strangle it and stuff it back in. "Huh?"

Eleanor let out an exasperated sigh, leaning her head at a more abrupt angle on her fist as she turned her interrogation to the unsuspecting boy, who had obviously deemed himself free of suspicion knowing her hatred of his very existence. Which was exactly why she suspected him. "Don't try to deny it, Freckles, only one person can manage to piss me off so much and, besides, your reaction when I accused you of being Liam over the phone was way too reflexive." She could have sworn that the boy had paled at least ten shades whiter than his usual complexion. "But, don't worry, I'm not assuming that you actually care about me enough to call. I'm going to guess that Nate put you up to it as he was too afraid that I would recognise his voice even with a voice changer. Come to think of it, he probably told you what to say as well. That would explain how you knew so much about me and why you seemed a little...un...Liam like at times."

Liam didn't know whether to feel ecstatic or  devastated. On the one hand, she still had no idea how he felt about her and...on the other hand...she still had no idea how he felt about her. Although she was partially correct with the whole Nate feeding him information thing, it didn't change the fact that it had been him. He had been the one to have that vision. He had been the one to call. Not Nate. Nate had almost had a fit when he had explained his actions the next morning. Let alone Flynn. But...then again, who could he really blame other than himself? He had given her no reason to suspect that he cared. His plan had worked a little too well. "Uh...yeah," his voice was unsteady, wavering as he looked the girl he loved in the eye and lied straight to her face, "yeah, that's what happened. I...I had the vision about you dying and then...then I told Nate about it and then he...he told me to call you."

Despite feeling a little satisfied at her skills of deduction, she couldn't help but notice that the smile he gave he was a little weak. Missing its usual malicious charm. A little too slow to form. Reluctant. She had almost expected him to rejoice and brag about how long he manged to fool her for. The lack of arrogant remark made her wonder if Liam was really the person she thought him to be at all. "Liam, are you okay? You haven't insulted me for at least ten minutes." She may have added in a punchline for the benefit of the Liam McAllaistar she thought she knew, but the underlying question was still there.

One that Liam couldn't possibly miss, seeing the swirl of confusion spread across her face in a way very much similar to stepping into a calm ocean. Ripples advancing so far out to sea that they vanished into the unknown. Tranquility disrupted both on the surface and much further below. Eleanor needed desperately to understand something right now, needed to have something that made sense so that she wouldn't be completely ripped off the shore. He didn't need to confuse her even more with his feelings. It would tilt her reality too much. Tilting it in such a manner that all the water spilled out all together. Flooding right over the edge. It would take Nate away from her. It would take her away from Nate. To learn that her best friend had only become friends with her so that he could tell Liam more about her. Something twisted in his gut. "Yeah...yeah, I'm fine. I...I just need a glass of water or something. Should have known there was something wrong with that coffee the moment I discovered that Flynn had made it."

And, with a half-hearted chuckle that sounded anything but humorous - he left.

A/N: Hey guys! Hope you call enjoyed this chapter! I almost died of laughter when editing because I realised that my computer had auto-corrected every single 'Liam' to 'Lima' instead so it would have been very weird to read without context :,)

Hope you're all doing well and are enjoying the story so far <3

Stay awesome as always!
