Chp 9: Self-doubt

*Time skip! So now Nico is about 3 months pregnant*

Will was in the infirmary, sorting vials to cure common colds, headaches and the such when it happened. A piercing scream ran through the camp and was heard by all. Will was out and bolting towards it when Nico ran out of their cabin. All around them, campers were gathering weapons and charging towards the barrier. As they neared, Will could see a heavily pregnant woman, drawing vines up from the ground to protect herself from two club-wielding giants. She was screaming bloody murder but was going to get squashed if those plants failed.

"A child of Demeter!" Will yelled at anyone who would hear. Two Demeter kids beside him looked and began assisting their sister from afar, reinforcing the vines with some of their own. Will knew he couldn't do anything until she was inside the barrier. Right now, she was backed against Thalia's tree and screaming as hard as she could.

When a particularly hard club hit went through the side of her plant protection, she screamed, ducked to the opposite side and held her hands over her belly. Will's attention was brought back to the fact that there were two lives on the line today. All the more reason to get her out of there. Nico sprinted up to him, his baby bump slightly protruding against his shirt.

"I need to get her," he said. Will knew what he meant.

"And risk four lives instead of one?" he cried. "Absolutely not!" Nico put a hand on either cheek and looked Will in the eyes, their foreheads touching.

"Il mio amor, you know I wouldn't do this if there wasn't another way. She is trapped in her own protection, but sooner or later it will break and she will die. I know that Bianca can withstand it. She is like me. Please, Will, let me try," there were tears glinting in their eyes, both knowing that they were trusting each other with perhaps their own death. Will nodded and turned back to prepare a stretcher. Nico kissed him, took a running start towards the trees, grabbed a shadow, and disappeared.

He re-appeared in the plant cage just as it was punctured and a club was going for him. Too shocked to register anything, he fell, dodging the club and falling instead on this back, his arms around his baby bump. The girl, also shocked that someone had appeared out of no-where, bent down, forgetting the club, which hit her square in the back. She screamed and fell into Nico's waiting arms. They then travelled to safety. With the innocents out of the way, the Ares cabin charged and finished the monsters off in a matter of minutes.

Will managed to catch them on a stretcher each. He knew that both Nico and their baby were okay when he ran his fingers over Nico's taut stomach. Neither was fading, which was a good start.  He sighed in relief.  He then moved onto the girl. She was another problem altogether. She'd obviously been running from monsters for a while now. She had lots of dark bruises dotting her ribs and legs, small scratches placed everywhere on her body and a small, yet slightly deep cut on her forehead that was bleeding. Her clothes were tattered and she had a small backpack that Clarrise had retrieved from the vine cage. It contained a water bottle that was half full and a square of ambrosia in a ziplock bag. But most importantly, she was pregnant.

Will held his hands over her bloated abdomen to create a diagnosis on the baby's condition. As he did so, he felt that the baby was about 7 months developed and was more god than mortal. This was a god spawn. A minor god, but a god none the less. He swore when he felt that the blow to the back she has received had hurt her unborn child. He - Will could sense it was a he without doing an ultrasound - was very weak, telling him that he either had to get out of there or for him to find a way to help him from out here.

The girl shifted and groaned when her eyes snapped open suddenly.

"What?!?" she exclaimed, before remembering where she was. "Who are you? Am I at camp? Is my baby ok? What are you doing?" She babbled, obviously stressed.

"My name is Will Solace, head counsellor of Apollo cabin, and a great healer. Yes, you're at camp, I'm checking your baby now" he left out the part where her baby was not ok but planned on telling her if nothing could be done. "Now, I'm going to ask you a few questions, ok?" she nodded. "Ok, what's your name and how old are you?" she sighed.

"My name is Kiki Fallowbrough, I'm 16 years old" she stopped. "I think" she added "and I'm a daughter.."

"Of Demeter, we know" Will cut in. "Right, do you know who you are pregnant by?" she blanched.

"I-I-I" she stuttered.

"Sssh, sssh, it's alright, you don't need to say just yet. I just need to know if he was a god." she hesitated, before nodding. Will could tell that it wasn't consensual. Either way, there were two lives on the line. "Alright, how long have you been running from monsters?"

"I was forced to leave home after dad- after dad was killed. I was 11"

"And you've been running since?" she nodded.

And so it went on. Will asked questions, he mostly got answers. All the while, he was keeping an eye - or a hand - on her baby's condition. Nico came in about 15 minutes after Kiki woke up. He stopped in the doorway, looked at Will, pale. Will knew why. He sighed, asked Kiki if she would mind if he left for a minute, then went outside with Nico.

"Have you told her?" Wil shifted from foot to foot and looked down.

"No...," he mumbled. Nico sighed and went to go and wrap Will in a bear hug. Will began crying.

"I-I-I know t-that I-I *hic* can't d-do anything, b-but what if t-that *hic* was y-you? W-what if I-I co-couldn't s-s-save Bianca? I-I'm a failure..." Nico held him, and after he was sure Will was finished he said:

"Death is part of life, Will. The hardest part about knowing if someone might die is knowing you can't help them all. It's the same with being a doctor. You have the ability to save everyone, but you can't save everyone." Will sniffed. "But you can save her," Nico finished, kissing him on the head. "Now go."

As Will went back inside, Kiki was waiting, Leyla beside her. They seemed to be chatting quite happily. Will sighed and stepped forward.

"Kiki, I have some news" Leyla went to leave, but Kiki grabbed her arm, a pleading look in her eyes. She stayed. "I'm afraid your baby, no matter how godly, is still mortal. And unfortunately, is not winning the battle to live." she gasped. She opened her mouth but Will cut her off. "I've thought of all the possibilities, and the best chance at survival is if we do a caesarian. But I need to tell you, that your baby might very well not survive. Do you want to try?" She was crying, her hands wrapped protectively around her stomach. With teary eyes, she nodded slowly. "Ok"

After the caesarian, they had a crying baby. Everyone thought that the operation had been a success, but Nico knew differently. The little boy, who Kiki had named Tassos, had a little less than a day to live. It was horrendously unfair for poor Kiki, but it was the longest Thanatos could give her with her baby. Nico told her this. She was crying, but, seeing death every day with all the plants and flowers that were her mother's domain, she understood that death was part of the life cycle. She had fallen asleep with the persuasion of the Hypnos cabin and had woken to the opportunity to breastfeed her child for the last time. As Will watched her (not in a weird way) she said, not looking up:

"I hated him for it. For raping me. I mean, I'm so young. But he did it anyway. For a year, he 'gained my trust' and then, he just went on ahead and did it.  I thought I would hate his child, but really, I'm sad to see him go, and so soon. But he visited me in my dreams again. He told me that he would take Tassos with him, to grow up in his palace, even in death. He would die still, but he had made a deal with Hades to let him live on in dreams. So I may never get to hold you again, but I hope you remember me, little one." Will smiled. It was odd, for him, to see someone so at peace with the death of a loved one.

"Who is his father?" Will asked softly. She looked up.

"Morpheus. The dream god. I fell asleep in a forest, and I was asleep for over a year..." Will nodded. Suddenly she froze.

"He-he-he's not sucking. I-I think" Will gave a sad smile, walked over, and checked his pulse. She was right. He was gone. Suddenly, he glowed alabaster and vanished. She cried but was ok knowing that he would live on with his father. Will was upset with himself, for not doing more, but knew he had done all he could. He sighed and left the infirmary for the first time in two days.
