Zane goes back to his area of the gym and gets started on teaching his class. Since he puts his whole attention on his class he is rather startled when he hears, "Sub Commander!"
Zane whirls around and finds Trent coming towards him carrying Kerry in his arms. Anger like he's never felt before suffuses him. "What happened?" He demands as he sees Kerry with tears running down her face.
He gently takes his ward in his arms and carries her over to the side lines where there are some benches. Setting her down he waits for some answers.
"I'm sorry, Zane, I tried to move and I couldn't." Kerry tells him and that just increases his anger. The only way that she wouldn't be able to move is if someone used an ability on her.
"She was doing fine, Derrick left to help some other students and left her sparring against another female in the class. Since she was doing fine, her forms were correct, I was looking at my work and not her." Trent is quick to fill in his leader.
Neither had noticed another young angel following them in. "Missy and Drusilla are both angels with abilities. They both used the freeze ability on your ward so that she couldn't move. Then Missy did a leg sweep, she did it with the intent to break her ankle, sir." The young angel that had hidden in the shadows dares to come forward and tell the angry sub commander.
He is terrified as he looks at the angry leader, but holds his ground. He swallows heavily as the commanders gaze spears him. "I had seen them talking before class when you were presenting young Kerry to our teacher, although I couldn't see you. After you left Missy leaned over and whispered something to Drusilla. I didn't catch all of it, but I did get the understanding that they were planning on hurting someone using their abilities. I'm sorry, Sub Commander, but I wasn't able to stop them in time."
Zane reigns in his anger at this explanation from this young angel. "How would you have been able to stop it?" His attention turns to the angel that comes into the room and his anger burns brighter than before.
"I was told that there were no angels with abilities in this class. How then was it possible for two of them to work together to harm my ward?" Zane demands of Derrick.
Derrick sighs. "After Officer Trent left to bring Kerry to you I went back over their application for the class. They listed on their application that they don't have any abilities, yet, I felt them being used, just didn't know who or where until it was too late."
Zane nods but narrows his eyes. Lying like that is a punishable crime. That is on the parents of the angels. Harming intentionally like the two angels did is also punishable. Zane smiles a very cold smile. "Call their parents in and have a meeting set up. Better call a mediator as well. I plan on enforcing the punishment." Zane tells Derrick who nods and leaves the room as fast as he can.
"Has a healer been sent for?" Zane demands from his underling.
"Yes, sir, as soon as I saw her on the ground holding her ankle."
"Very well." Zane then turns from his dismissed officer to the young angel that was brave enough to follow Trent into the death angel practice room.
"Young man, I would like to call you to the meeting as well. Would your family need to be contacted?"
The as yet unnamed young angel lowers his head and shakes it. "No, sir. Most of them followed Lucifer yesterday."
Zane's eyes flash. Another smart enough to stay when their family was foolish enough to leave. "Who stayed behind?"
The young man looks up and tries to hide his fear. Zane then understands, they all left him. He pulls back his anger, and kneels before the young angel. "You have no need to fear me. Tell me, young one, what is your name?"
By now Kerry is listening as well.
"My name is Alistair, sir." Alistair says softly, but clearly.
"Thank you for coming forward with the information you did, Alistair. How could you have helped Kerry, my ward?" Zane asks gently, he can tell that Alistair is about ready to take off.
"My brothers and sisters, well my whole family, has abilities and they would use them against me. So I had to learn how to fight against them without any lessons. It is only recently that my family allowed me to start defense lessons here."
"They all left to follow Lucifer, didn't they?" Zane questions softly and this time Alistair nods miserably.
Zane stands back up and ruffles Alistair's hair. "No need to be worried. I'll talk to Father about where to have you placed. If you aren't taken into the death angels, which since you are older, isn't too likely, I would like you to teach Kerry how to fight against those with abilities. Otherwise she'll be helpless against them like she was today." Zane is pleased by this turn of events. He wanted to teach Kerry, but the rules are very specific about that. But since Alistair is not a death angel, then it would be permissible for him to teach her.
Alistair looks at Zane in shock. "You would allow me to teach your ward, sir?"
"Yes, I have no doubt that you helped in protecting her, even if you couldn't stop the attack completely. This is something I won't be allowed to teach her and there aren't many non death angels that know how. You are the only one that I know of. So if you would be willing, I would like for you to teach her, if she is willing?"
Alistair looks from the death angel to the young girl he helped and nods thoughtfully. "If she is willing to have me teach her, then I'll be willing to help her."
Zane smiles and guides the young angel to his ward. "Kerry, this is Alistair and he can help you learn to fight against those with abilities so this doesn't happen again."
Kerry smiles through her pain, "I would be honored, Alistair to have you help me."
With that Zane relaxes. Then his eyes widen in horror as he realizes that Kerry has been in pain this whole time.
"Forgive me, Kerry, the healer is on their way, but I can ease your pain if you would like? I won't take it away, I want you to remember you are injured so that you don't injure yourself further."
"It's alright, Zane. But I wouldn't mind some relief, it's throbbing pretty bad right now."
Without another thought Zane lightly holds Kerry's ankle and takes away the majority of her pain.
Kerry lets out a sigh of relief, "Thank you, Zane. It feels much better now."
Trent comes up with a male angel. "Sub Commander, Kerry, this is your tutor, Carson."
"Sir, Miss Kerry, it is an honor to teach you."
Kerry smiles in delight and Zane lets out a breath of relief.
"She's been injured, so she won't be getting started until the healer arrives," Zane warns.
But even as he does, Derrick returns with a female angel being towed along behind him. She's rather upset about it too. That is, until she takes a look at where Derrick had lead her and with whom she's surrounded.
"Sir!" She says and straightens up.
"Healer, this is my ward, Kerry. Her ankle was injured in a malicious attack against her in her defense class earlier. I've eased her pain, but she needs healing."
"Of course sir," the healer has seen the sub commander, but hasn't ever personally been presented to him. Most death angels don't need healing, they are very good in avoiding being injured.
She goes over to Kerry and kneels down at her side. "My name is Angela," the healer tells the young angel. She sees Kerry's wide smile and smiles back. "Yeah, I know. My parents aren't very imaginative when it comes to names. Fortunately there was only me and a brother. I got the better name."
With this Kerry gives out a merry tinkle of a laugh and every one that heard it has their heart lightened.
Trent stiffens, "Sir, she might have an ability."
Zane turns to his underling, "What do you mean?"
"I've heard of an ability that lightens the hearts of others, makes them happy. It is rare and very precious, but just now, with Kerry's laughter, that's what I felt."
Zane looks at Trent thoughtfully for a full minute. If would explain a great deal actually.
Zane smiles softly, "Well, how bout that, Trent? An angel of soul healing being raised by death angels?"
Trent and Zane look at each other and smile. Never had that ever happened in all eternity. But Father knows those that have abilities and he allowed Kerry to come to them.
"Well, it's sure going to be interesting isn't it sir?" Trent finally says.
"Yes, but Father never does anything without a purpose behind it. If He feels that this is necessary, then I shudder to think why?"
With that the two turn back to Kerry and keep their thoughts to themselves. Just how dark are the days ahead of them going to be?
