I step out of Red's car, the sunset casting oranges and pinks and purples across the sky.
I blow my hair out of my mouth, seeing that it was being blown in my face by the nighttime air.
"Tee," Red says from about six feet in front of me, making me turn quickly, my eyebrows raising in the process.
"Huh - oh, right," I laugh and jog up to him then take his hand in mine and walk up to the diner, Red pushing the door open and letting me go in first.
"Table for two?" Red asks the hostess who grabs two menus then looks Red up and down then smiles a bit, making me narrow my eyes at her.
She leads us to the table then puts the two menus on the table in front of us before leaving.
"I don't like her," I say as I open my menu.
"Tee, don't worry about it." Red says then takes one of my hands and massages it with his thumb gently.
I look down at our hands, quickly relaxing before I nod a bit.
-
The date is so far going well - thank god. Until I see a familiar girl walk in but I can't quite put a finger on it.
I look down at my menu, feeling her eyes staring at us, and giving me an uneasy feeling.
I ignore her - or, try to ignore her as she gets seated at the table by ours.
I clear my throat, grabbing Red's attention before I flick my eyes up to her then back to Red.
He raises his eyebrows then looks over, catching her eye before he looks away with the 'oh shit' look on his face.
"Let's just - hurry up so we can get the hell out of here, please." I say softly so she can't hear.
Red nods a bit in agreement. "Agreed," he says then looks back down at his menu.
-
We walk back out to the car, the feeling of Em staring at us the whole time leaving pinpricks down my spine and on the back of my neck.
"Hey!" I hear her voice call from behind us as Red unlocks the car.
Her hands are placed on either one of our shoulders, making us both look over our shoulders.
"I thought you two broke up?" She asks, eyeing me up and down.
"I uh.. no..?" I say in a small voice, intimidated by the woman in front of us.
"Back off, Em." Red says, pushing me behind him in a defensive manner.
"Why should I? You are mine, aren't you?" She asks, pulling her arms around his neck.
He quickly pushes her arms away from him then narrows his eyes. "Let's go, Tee." Red says as he turns to go.
Em stops him then spins him around again and kisses him.
Red quickly pulls away. "What the fuck?!" He says, eyes wide.
She just smiles. I would see that as a happy smile but - this is different.
He turns then walks back to the car and starts walking, with me behind him, looking over my shoulder every so often.
-
I push my door open then draw in a breath, my heart starting to tear.
"Red - it hurts me to say this probably more than it hurts you but I.. uh.. I think we should just like.. not.. date," I say softly, refusing to look him in the eyes.
"But don't take it personally- I do like you. I just.. I don't want either of us to get hurt," I say softly then look over at him, finding him staring at the steering wheel. "I'm sorry." I say softly then get out of the car and jog up to the house and go in, shut the door and let out the breath I didn't know I was holding.
And then a light flickers on. "Tee?"
Shit.
