Chapter Seven

At lunch in school the next day, I found it hard to keep my eyes from straying to where Ben and Holly were sitting, smiling at each other and laughing as they shared jokes. An outsider would say, "They're a cute couple" but all I could see was betrayal. Holly, the girl who'd pretended to be my friend all thing time and Ben, the love of my life.

"Stop looking at them," Kate said to me. "It's just hurting you." There was a frown on her face.

I bit my lip and tore my eyes away from the perfect, happy couple. Lucas, Kate's boyfriend smiled sympathetically at me and I stared at him for a moment before glancing away. Why couldn't I find a boyfriend like him? He was perfect. The love that he had for my best friend was pure and genuine.

"I agree with Katie," he said. "You deserve better, Ray. He's a prick."

I smiled faintly, but it didn't reach my eyes. Thankfully, another one of my friends who was sitting at our lunch table, cut in.

"Hey, I heard your brother is coming down for the weekend?" Alice asked.

I raised an eyebrow. Bryan was coming? "Where'd you hear that?" I asked curiously.

"My sister," she explained and I nodded, quickly glancing at Ben again. Bryan had never liked him, the only one in my family. Everyone else had been instantly taken with his charismatic behaviour and bright smile.

"Oh okay," I murmured and frowned at the table. I poked at my lunch again and finally decided that I wasn't hungry. I got up and went to the trash can, dumping the contents of my tray in it before setting it on the counter. When I turned around to go back to my seat, I felt something wet and cool run down my front.

The cafeteria went silent and I was gaped in shock at Holly Beau who was standing there, a smug smile on her face. Perfect, freaking perfect Holly Beau, with her glossy brown hair, dark eyes and slender figure. A pencil skirt hugged her hips and she was wearing a blue top that had elbow-length sleeves.

I hated her.

"I'm sorry, Rachel, my hand slipped, I guess." She smiled innocently, but I saw the sharp glint in her eyes. This wasn't an accident and she definitely wasn't sorry.

My eyes found Ben and he was staring at me with a mixture of sadness and pity. But there was no regret. I glanced away, feeling my face burn with shame and I ducked my head. "It's fine," I murmured, pushing past her and leaving the cafeteria.

As soon as the double doors closed behind me, the tears began to fall.
