The relief that came from writing that letter was immense.
I knew that Ben would probably never receive this. It'd be humiliating to pour out my heart and soul to him only to have him reject it. I couldn't take that chance. But it felt good, writing out my feelings. Knowing they were out in the open now and not bottled up inside of me, even though no one would see read it.
I found an envelope, a cream colored one with a smooth texture. There were parallel blue lines on the bottom. It was the kind of envelopes I used for party invitations or special occasions. I folded the paper and slid it into the envelope, sealing it shut after.
When that was done, I hid it in a shoe box in the back of my closet. I wanted absolutely no one to find it. Not even Melanie, who was like my other best friend. And especially not Kate, if she were to come over. She had never really liked Ben in the first place. And seeing the contents of the letter would no doubt anger her.
She was fiercely protective over me, which was both annoying and endearing. I had gotten used to it a long time ago because she was my best friend and I loved her.
After that was done, I trudged to my laptop and lay down on my bed, logging onto my Facebook. My hands were shaking as I moved my cursor to the flashing red box that signaled that I had eighteen notifications. I had an idea about why I was getting all this attention.
Megan Ripper, Tyler Banks, Timothy Woods and 4 others posted on you all.
Timothy Woods tagged you in his comment.
Remy Williams commented on your photo.
All this attention was a little sickening. I knew it only resulted from me getting dumped by Ben so publicly. Everyone knew each other in our school and this was gossip because there were hardly ever any excitement.
But I pushed my nausea away and decided to find out how I had anything to do with Tim’s comment. But I instantly felt a rush of dizziness hit me as I took in the words that felt like stabs to my heart.
Ben Rivera is in a relationship with Holly Beau.
Tears poured out of my eyes and I wished at the moment that I was six feet under. Death would have been better than reading those dreaded words. Waves and waves of pain crashed onto me, pulling me under, drowning me.
"Rachel?" Stefan knocked on my bedroom door, dragging my eyes away from the laptop screen. I blinked my tears away and logged out of Facebook before walking over to open the door.
"What do you want?" I snapped.
There was a hurt look on his face from my harsh tone. He pouted, looking exactly like my father, with his tanned face and blonde hair. The only thing he had of my step-mother was the green eyes. "Mom said that you had to make me a sandwich after school."
I raised an eyebrow. "Why couldn't you make it yourself?" I demanded.
"I'm not supposed to go in the kitchen," he said, frowning.
I sighed, but realized that this was the distraction I needed from Ben and Holly. So I sighed, a little tiredly, and ruffled his hair. "Let's go," I murmured and let him lead me down to the kitchen.
