The Festival
Janet's POV
You know those awkward moments you have when you can feel the eyes of someone staring at you? That's exactly what I had been dealing with since I dropped Amy and Erin out of my life. I never imagined it would be this hard because I was used to be alone.
But it was hard
Especially since I share various classes with them. Erin and I still had a project to work on and he never said a word. Only when he wanted to run something by me was when he spoke. I didnt miss the hurtful stares he'd give me every time he was forced to say something to me.
It made me feel uncomfortable and yet I didn't say anything. I let things stay the way they are in hopes that everything would eventually become a distant memory.
I'd be lying if I said that a bit of my heart squeezed whenever I saw Millie Anderson hanging off his arm. They seemed inseparable, wherever he went she was always right there beside him. I hated to admit they looked good together and he seemed... happy.
As the week went by the school had decided to do a festival for all of the students. Everyone had to take part in some particular way so I was forced to help decorate the huge yard.
Stations and games were set up. There were even a photo booth and certain food stations. And surprisingly the school had managed to get a large Ferris wheel put in. It would seem they went all out this year and no one seemed to be complaining.
The festival took place after school hours and so everyone would go home and come back later. I had every intention of staying home in bed scrolling through Netflix.
That was until I had a certain craving for a funnel cake. Also, it was sort of mandatory to attend school events. So I grudgingly got in the shower and quickly got ready. I threw on a white tee and an overall dress. I applied a light foundation on my face and kept my wild hair down.
I left a note for Ms. Freckle letting her know I would be home later. Every step I took felt heavy as I made my way back to school. It was around 6 at night and the festival was already in full swing.
There was a long line to get in and I silently cursed myself for not coming earlier. Festivals were kind of a school tradition and this year's theme colors were blue and white. The decorations had turned out to be perfect after all.
The school festival was already buzzing and I immediately felt the need to leave. It was moments like this where I felt out of place. I walked around the huge yard alone as people walked in groups with their friends.
I occupied myself by going on a mission to find the funnel cake stand. After searching for ten minutes I finally found the yellow stand with a cartoon funnel cake. The line was fairly long I was about the tenth person in line.
I gazed around the festival my eyes landed on a rather large group. They sat on the benches all huddled up and laughing. It looked to be some of the boys from the soccer team. My throat immediately clenched when I saw Erin sitting on top of the table.
His long body sat gracefully as he combed his dark hair. His face broke out into a large grin, laughing at something someone said. I hadn't noticed I had been staring when he finally caught my eye.
We held eye contact as if we were the only people at the festival. He didn't dare blink as he gently bit his lip. He gave me a small nod in greeting before he finally looked away. I tore my eyes away and felt a sudden wave of embarrassment travel down my body.
His gaze had been so intense. Why didn't I just look away? Sometimes I cursed myself for putting myself in awkward situations. Soon the line moved up and I ordered a large funnel cake. I added a bit of chocolate syrup and strawberries to top it off.
I sat at a table alone just me and my funnel cake. I couldn't complain. As the night progressed a game of scavenger hunt was announced. If there was one thing I hated it's going deep into the woods looking for meaningless items.
We each had to pick a number and then if someone had that exact number they would be paired up. When it was my turn to pick a number I silently prayed I wouldn't be paired up with anyone too weird.
I grabbed a paper from the bowl and waited until everyone had gotten a number.
"Alright everyone, please take a look at your number. Remember you get what you get and you dont get upset"! The coach screamed, I shook my head at his childish antics. I unfolded the piece of paper and saw It had the number 9.
As students gather around to find their partners I was shocked when I heard Erin's deep voice. " Who has number 9"? I felt the blood rush to my head quickly as I silently panicked. The white piece of paper in my hand was now slightly crumbled and the number was all choppy.
Just as I was about to raise my hand a furious Millie Anderson pulled at my arm. "What the fuck do you think you are doing"?!
