A Compromise
Janet's POV
I was grateful that it was finally the weekend. I woke up early Saturday morning, made myself a large bowl of cereal, and turned on some cartoons. It was a pretty chill morning, something I hadn't been able to do was chill back and relax. After finishing my cereal I sprawled out against the couch like a cat.
I silently groaned when I remembered Erin had a soccer game tonight. He wanted me there as his "good luck charm" whatever the hell that meant. I never did get to see him in action on the field. I would only catch glimpses during gym class.
All I wanted to do was to crawl back into bed and lay underneath my comfortable blankets. Suddenly the doorbell rang loudly causing me to frown. I hadnt been expecting anyone so I was a bit confused.
I slid on my slippers then headed for the front door. A woman with brunette hair was standing outside dressed in some yoga pants and a grey t-shirt. "Hello, may I help you"? I asked trying desperately not to show how annoyed I was. She looked at me for a while almost awestruck. My eyes cast down her body to the slightly large bulge of her belly.
She looked oddly familiar though I couldn't quite put my finger on it. I waved a hand back and forth in her face snapping her back to earth. " Hello? Can I help you with something"? My patience had slowly been growing thin. I desperately wanted to shut the door and go take a nap before I headed to Erin's game tonight.
She then began to sob hysterically. A few onlookers looked at us with concerned faces. "Look, I don't know who you are or why you are here. But I'm going to have to ask you to leave". Through gritted teeth just as I was about to shut the door she stuck her foot in between, keeping me from closing it.
" Wait! I'm sorry I'm so sorry! I knew I shouldn't have come here but... I had to see you for myself". She sniffled loudly and a part of me felt bad for leaving her in such a state. So like the "good person" I was I offered her to come inside.
She thankfully agreed before waddling inside the house. She made herself comfortable on the couch while I ran to the kitchen and grabbed her a water bottle. She visibly seemed to calm down a bit.
I sat across from her as she continued gulping down half the bottled water. I peered at her getting a closer look at her. Why did she look so familiar? A strange suspicion went on in my head as I peered at the strange woman.
She placed her half-full water on the table before peering at me with interest. "Your Janet...right"? She asked hesitantly. I nodded my head gently as she leaned nearly sitting on the edge of the couch.
She flashed me a watery smile. "It's good to finally meet you. I... I know you must be confused and...well Keri warned me but I just couldn't help myself". She grabbed my hands gently in hers and gave them a light squeeze.
"I'm your older sister... Helen".
Keri...Helen
The names rang a bell all too well. I suddenly felt the urge to snatch my hands away out of her grasp. But the look she gave me seemed so...sincere, at least to me. Silent tears began to falls down her cheeks and that's when I saw it.
The rather medium-sized birthmark that sat on the left side of her face. It resembled mine, all red and discolored. Yet she hadn't the slightest makeup on her face. She seemed content despite the alligator tears that are leaked from her eyes.
"You people have got to stop showing up. If I wanted to meet you I would have done so already" I snapped. She flinched back at my harsh tone and for a quick second, I admittedly felt bad. But I could not stop the arising frustration I felt.
She sighed gently rubbing her protruding bump lightly. "I understand this may all seem like too much to handle. I get it. I....I was just too excited knowing that I have another sister. I just had to see you to believe it".
What was there to believe? It wasn't as if I was actively reaching out to them. No, they had been doing too much of it of their own free will. It annoyed me yet I kept thinking that if I had allowed one meeting with them maybe this would all stop.
I cleared my throat a bit before leaning a bit forward on the couch. "One meeting. I'll meet with you and the others one time that's it. After that, I want to be left alone".
She grinned big and then stuck out a hand. " Deal". I hesitantly shook her hand. And so it had been decided, I was to finally meet my long-lost "family".
I vowed to myself that after that day would pass I wouldn't ever hear from them again. I could only hope they would keep their side of the bargain.
