"Annabeth!" Percy's face broke into a smile. Even with the horrible death threats, Annabeth could make him smile.
"Hey Seaweed Brain!" Annabeth grinned back at him. She started jogging towards him. Percy moved towards her too. When Annabeth reached him, she would be safe. Percy would keep her safe.
They were only a few moments away from reaching each other when Annabeth let out a gasp and stopped moving.
Too late, Percy saw the dark skinned girl standing behind Annabeth, grinning maniacally. One of her glimmering gold knives shone in the fading light and the other...
Percy's eyes followed the shaft of the blade and saw a golden tip poking through his Wise Girl's chest.
He was too late. He was always too late. His mind brought back the words he had read just a week ago "and now another is dead because of you". All his fault. Reyna, Leo, Calypso, Thalia, Piper, Jason, Grover, Juniper, Mom, Paul, and now Annabeth... Even that boy, that traitorous boy, Alabaster. All your fault.
The girl grinned, black hair flying around her face. "My name is Gemma... And my father is Thanatos, hero. Don't you remember?"
He remembered. Of course, he did. Yet all he could do was stand there, heartbroken and ruined, watching Gemma drag Annabeth's body away. No body, no proper funeral. He would never see her again...
