Chapter 5: Help

Power. A word that used to scare Engfa so much. Because people with power could and still can do anything they want in the world, well, at least until they meet someone who has more power than them.

If she could change something in the world, it'd be unnecessary, forced privileges. Because the bitter truth of the real world is that privileges are almost never given to those it was made for. But she could not. In fact, she couldn't even fight against it  Because she didn't have any power over the society.

Power is a dangerous thing, for most. For the rest, it's a privilege. And by the rest, it meant the rich, or the selfish rich, to be exact. They think they rule the society, they think they live higher than the others in the society and they do. Because whenever someone has the gut to fight against them, they have the power to destroy their life.

Engfa hated those people, those selfish bastards who destroyed people's lives, their feelings for fun, no no, for… the approval of their power, or simply, money. They took people's lives as a toy and earned money selling their feelings.

But just because she hated them didn't mean she'd stand them. She didn't despise them, she hated them. There's a difference. She had fought against every single person who didn't have manners, be it in her life or someone dear to her. And if it meant that her career, her life would be destroyed then be it.

Because the thing she hated even more than power was injustice. In a world where people lived to survive, she looked for a way to stop injustice. In a world where ‘Everything is fair in love and war’, she looked for a way to destroy the war. We have brains and we're all humans then why are we ending the lives of our own species?

No part of the rich had ever apologized to Engfa about their wrongdoings. That girl, that so-called influencer was the first. Engfa knew she couldn't hate Charlotte, at least she apologized but that's just not enough. Her whole life, her dream, it's all destroyed! Yes, she apologized but what did she do to make up for the loss? Where the hell is justice here?

“Phi Eng! Are you still on the phone?” Fon's voice woke her up from the never ending rail of thoughts.

“Yeah, I am. I just… trailed off a bit,” Engfa replied, her voice hesitant. She didn't know why she still had the energy to do anything at all. It's just so… brutal. But she knew she couldn't do anything about this at all.

“Are you sure you don't want me to come over? You don't sound good,” Of course, she didn't sound okay. Because she wasn't. She wasn't okay. Everything… Everything's ruined. How can someone even expect her to be okay?

“No, it's okay. I'm… fine.” She didn't sound convincing when she said that. But all her friends knew how persistent she was. If she had made her mind up on something, she'd finish it no matter what. There's no point arguing.

“Okay then… but…” Before the voice from the other side could continue, Engfa pressed end and ended the call. That wasn't the first time she had done something like that to any of her friends. It didn't mean that she was rude or anything, it just meant she didn't want to talk.

Engfa's lips curled up to form a fake smile as she opened social media and scrolled through, as if to convince herself that she really was okay. ‘Will the owner of the popular restaurant get arrested?’, ‘What happened to ‘Food is Life’? Was it cancelled?’, ‘Famous influencer harassed?’

She continued to read the titles of the random videos, torturing herself from inside. There had been so many hassles created around the issue. There were even more rumors created because of this. If Charlotte really was guilty, then how come she hadn't addressed any of those fake accusations? How come the video she posted was still there?

If Charlotte had known that would become such a big issue, she'd have never done any of these in the first place. She just meant to mess with the owner but maybe she had forgotten the power she actually held on platforms.

She had apologized to Engfa but she knew Engfa wouldn't forgive her so soon and now, she felt like she was stuck in a rathole where there was no escape at all. She had gotten an idea about what to do to get Engfa to forgive her, but it's hard. She'd never felt so guilty about anything in her whole life.

She knew she had to delete that video so people wouldn't be coming after Engfa. But she needed an explanation. If someone as popular as her deleted a video from her channel, the viewers would definitely notice it and ask out. She'd eventually have to answer those questions.

But what explanation though? If she came out clean about what she did, people would start hating her and her channel might even be destroyed. So what was she supposed to do?

If she made any other excuses on her channel, it'd make it even harder for Engfa to forgive her. Charlotte sat in the café, clenching her hair and looking down at the coffee in front of her. She finally took out her phone and opened Line.

Faye

Ai’Faye! Please give me a solution na? I don't know what to do anymore.

She texted Faye and put her phone down on the table. In about half an hour, her phone started ringing. She answered the video call and set it up.

“What do you want?” Faye asked sternly, clearly outside as well. “Can you not bother me when I'm working?” she continued, showing the room around. She was sitting in her office chair.

Charlotte made a face that was almost pitiful. She gripped the phone tightly and spoke up. “What should I do? I don't want to feel this guilt!” She whined.

“Shouldn't you talk to her about this?” Faye asked in an advising tone. Faye never really had to apologize to someone for something so fucked up but she had pursued after girls before.

“But I don't know her,” Charlotte replied. She truly didn't even know the girl's name yet.

“Then get to know her!” Faye almost yelled from the other side. She was truly getting annoyed by Charlotte.

“She told me to stay away from her.”

Faye sighed, taking on a fake smile. “Oh dear little Lot, when did you start to even listen to people's words? Listen, pursue after her. She'd eventually come around.”

“She was crying.” Charlotte's face totally dropped. She didn't want to remember that. She'd seen people cry before but she never liked it when someone close to her cried in front of her. Now she had found out a new feeling of being the reason for someone's tears and she hated it, even more.

“Well, duh! Try to convince her that you truly are guilty. She'd either forgive you or tell you what would make her forgive you. You should help her build her career back.”

“How do I do that?”

Faye rolled her eyes. “Did you listen to me at all? Try getting closer to her. Try to help her.”
