8| First Day on the Job
Advika's POV
Forgetting about yesterday's events, I resolved to begin the day with renewed vigor and optimism.
Dad blessed me and gave me the best wishes, while mom gave me peda and dahi (sweet and curd) as good luck for the first day, as well as a warning not to mess with anyone without a reason. I don't know why mom thinks that I am the reason whenever I get into a problem. But please tell her that I don't mess with people for no reason.
My brother also wished me luck as I left the house, and thankfully, my scooty did not throw a tantrum today. It started at once.
When I arrived at the office, I showed my ID card to security, and HR took all of the necessary documents from me. I had already completed the portfolio the day before. I only do the work a day before only if it is utterly important.
She then summoned a young lady and asked her to show me the way to my office.
"Your boss is already aware that you are working for him and that today is your first day. So there is no need for me," she said as we approached his office door, which was already open, "you can go in" She said this and then left me alone.
My heart rate increased as a result of my nervousness, which was quite obvious.
I peeked into the office and saw my boss sitting on the chair, his back to me, apparently typing something on the phone.
I knocked softly on the door.
"May I enter, Sir?" I inquired softly and quietly.
"Yes," he agreed, spinning around in his seat to show me his face.
My world came to a halt for a brief moment as I came face to face with the person I was praying not to see again, at least not today because it was my first day of work and I didn't want to ruin it. But only my stars were with me for once. I don't know what I have done wrong that God is showing me all this.
"You!" was the first word that came out of my mouth.
"Yes, me!" He tented his fingers under his chin "were you expecting someone else?" He asked.
My head immediately snapped in the direction of the door and I read the name plate which says 'Mr. Shravana Singhania, Assistant Chairman'
Oh no!
This can't be true!
How could the son of the chairman could possibly work as his secretary?
When I turned my head to look straight, he was standing in front of me. I was so lost in my thoughts that I didn't notice when he got up and walked over to me. He stood tall, his hands tucked into his pants pocket. I felt very small in comparison to his tall personality.
"Why is your face's color drained? Miss? If you need medical help, get it as soon as possible because I don't tolerate lazy and sick people around me," he said. "I want you to be energetic and enthusiastic about work and also around me" for a fraction of a second I thought that he winked but then he was standing so normally that I am sure it was just an illusion of mine.
"How could you have reacted so normally? I mean..." My mouth began to blubber whatever was coming to mind.
"I keep my professional and personal lives separate, and I expect you to do the same," he said in a thick and authoritative tone.
He doesn't appear to be the person I know right now.
"Is this how we greet our seniors in the morning?" He inquired solemnly, his brow arched.
"Good morning," I said quietly.
"What? Who would add salutations?" he asked, taking a small, intimidating step toward me.
My lips pressed together in a thin line. He is knowingly teasing me. How could he have done this?
"Good morning, sir," I said with a heavy heart and in a very low tone.
"What?" He turned his ear towards me "I didn't hear you"
"Good morning, sir" I repeated.
"If this is how low you are going to talk with the client, they will not close deals with us. Be audible!" He reprimanded me.
I huffed and took a deep breath. Right now, I feel like a Nursery student being taught to say Good morning.
"Good morning, sir," I said loudly enough for every wall of his office to hear me.
"Morning," he mumbled before turning around and returning to his chair.
"Are you going to stand there like that now?" He inquired in a rude tone.
My feet immediately started walking towards him.
"Today is your first day that's why I am leaving you but let me tell you Ms. Advika..." He looked up as he said my name "I am very punctual and I don't tolerate indiscipline. The chairman may have hired you but I have the power to fire you because you are going to work directly under me"
I nodded.
"Although I believe Chairman must have told you about your job role, let me brief it to you again" he drew a deep breath "you have to work under me and do everything I ask you to" he paused for a second "of course, professionally, but let me clarify first, Ms. this job of yours will involve a lot of traveling, and you will have to accompany me and the Chairman whenever necessary. Although you have signed the offer letter, I am allowing you to back out if you are not comfortable with it" He stated.
"I don't have any problem"
I would have immediately left the job if it wasn't my dream job. I think he knows how desperately I want this job.
"Now go and bring me a coffee" he ordered
"Coffee? Me?" I asked.
I have been hired to help him with official work not to bring or make coffee for him.
"You have been hired to assist me with office work. Right?" He inquired, and I nodded "So, right now, my body requires coffee to begin work and clear my mind. I can't work or teach you anything if I don't have it. So go get a cup of coffee for me" he ordered me again in a nonchalant tone.
With no other choice, I set my documents on the table and dashed off to look for the panther to bring a cup of coffee for him. As I took a few steps, he began speaking, which halted me.
"And don't forget to leave out the sugar. I don't like even one percent sugar in my liquids, it doesn't sit well with all the workouts"
His words shocked me because he had a cup of tea with sugar equal to two cups of tea made by my mother at my house the day before. He didn't complain about it there and had it with a broad smile on his face.
Is he acting now or was he acting yesterday?
What is his true personality?
What exactly is he?
I turned around and began walking again, but I was only able to take two steps when he said,
"Wait," I turned around to face him. It hasn't even been 5 minutes since I have met him and I am already annoyed by him. I am not sure how I am going to tolerate him all day. "You only have five minutes to bring me the coffee as you have already wasted my time," he said, looking at his wristwatch, "and your time begins now!"
I huffed and turned again to make my way toward the pantry.
Is this how my life is going to be from now on?
Life actually takes unexpected turns!
I hurried out of his office and made my way towards God knows where.
"Could you please tell me where the pantry is?" I figured it was better to inquire about the pantry than to go there blindly because it would only waste my time.
"Go straight and then turn right," the girl I asked told me politely. I liked how she spoke to me. There are very few people in places like this who will be willing to assist you.
After talking to the devil who is now my boss, everyone seems sweet and polite to me.
"Thank you,"
My feet followed the girl's instructions and, thankfully, I found the pantry in one go. I walked in and looked for the coffee machine, and when I found one, I didn't waste any time in preparing a cup of coffee to his taste.
As I was busy making the coffee two girls entered the pantry and started whispering something.
What?
"Are you a new joiner?" One of them asked and I nodded my head.
"Profile?" Another girl asked.
"Assistant of the Chairman's assistant," I told them.
"You mean to say the son of Chairman, Shravan Singhania, Right?"
"Yes"
"Oh! How lucky!"
Lucky, my foot.
I gave them a fake smile as I walked out with a cup of coffee in my hands. Before entering his office again, I knocked on the door.
"Please come in."
I set the coffee cup down on the table and waited for him to notice it. He took a sip and scrunched up his nose as if he had tasted something foul.
What did he expect?
He did not request that I add the sugar, so this is how it will taste, tasteless his life and bitter just like his nature!
"Let it be," he shrugged, "sit closer to me and get the day started," he said, still staring at the laptop screen.
Seriously? Sit closer to him?
