4| The Interview

Advika's POV

I climbed the stairs, panting heavily as I reached the floor.

"Advika Gupta," I said to the girl, taking deep breaths.

"You are late miss"

"I know, but you know I met with a jerk on my way," I told her the truth because lying is not in my nature, but I wasn't sure she'd be interested in my story, so I cut it short "you know, just tell me when is my number?"

While she was giving me those looks, I looked down at the file that was open in front of her and saw that my number was the next one. The interview has already been conducted by the girl who came before me. My lips curved into a wide smile.

"I'm not that late," I explained, "and I can still give the interview!"

She opened her mouth to stop me, but before she could respond, I ran to the chairman's cabin.

"But let her..." she said behind my back, but I didn't pay attention. I'm desperate for this job in this company. If I listened to her and stopped there, I would never have had this opportunity again. So I increased the speed of my steps.

As I was about to force open the door, it opened on its own, causing me to triple down and fall to the floor.

"Come out...." I heard her final words, which she had added in her previous sentence, and she stood beside me, looking down at me, in pity.

I was also putting pressure on myself at the time for doing all of this. On my own, I ruined my first impression in front of the Chairman.

I couldn't muster the courage to look up and meet his gaze.

How am I going to give my interview?

I am so dead!

Even before I gave the interview, I ruined my chances of being chosen.

Before leaving the chairman's cabin, I could hear the girl who had come to give an interview before me smirking down at me. I hung my head even lower, covering my face with my hair so the Chairman couldn't see me.

Because I didn't want to embarrass myself any further, I stood up and turned around to leave him alone. Today does not appear to be my day. I can't afford to embarrass myself any further.

"Stop!" His deep, authoritative command brought my feet to a halt.

Before leaving his cabin, his secretary bowed once in front of him. I'm sure he motioned for her to leave us alone. He is going to insult me in private.

"Turn around," he said again, and I couldn't help but pay attention.

"Didn't you come here for the interview?" My gaze was drawn up to his face by his question.

He still wants me to give him the final round of interviews after seeing how clumsy I am.

My pupils constricted as they scanned his features. It appears that I have seen him in person and that it was recently.

But where exactly?

Is this the same guy whose car I was using as a mirror?

'NO,' I shook my head vigorously to shake the thought away because that man was young for his age and couldn't make such a cheap move. I'm sure I'm feeling this way because I've seen him in magazines.

"No?" He asked, raising his eyebrows and looking at my trembling head.

"No, I mean yes!" I switched from moving my head left to right to move it up and down.

His brow furrowed for a beat before stepping back into his seat. He motioned for me to take the seat in front of him. I passed a forced smile to him before grabbing the seat.

It is the final round of interviews, and in his company, he chooses the employee himself in the final round because he wants to hire the best of the best.

His gaze then shifted from my face down to the file I was holding. I became aware of my surroundings and looked down.

Oh, God!

How could I have been so stupid?

I haven't yet given him my resume.

I immediately handed him my resume, and he began reading it before taking a deep breath and shaking his head.

"So, Miss Advika Gupta," he said, looking up at me, "tell me about yourself..." I became excited as soon as he asked this question because I had prepared well for it. "...that is not mentioned on your resume," he continued, and my smile faded.

What?

Who asks such a question?

The most common question is, 'Tell me about yourself.'

"Uh, huh." I cleared my throat to buy myself some time to think because my brain had already stopped working due to the previous incident.

"Today's weather is really nice"

And my day is really bad.

I was just saying whatever came to mind. But as soon as those words left my mouth, I bit my tongue to keep it from moving unnecessarily.

"What?" In complete shock, he inquired.

"I mean to say..." I tried to change my words to cover up my blunder.

"Seriously?" He inquired, and then he did something completely unexpected. He burst out laughing and threw his head back.

Even at this age, he seems so handsome and smart that he could easily fail young studs.

"I've heard a lot of formal responses to this question, but I've never heard this."

I forced a smile that I'm sure looked completely fake.

"So, miss, how did you like the weather today?" He further inquired "as far as I know people are getting frustrated with the heat"

"It is also a part of the climate," I said "I mean, if there is no heat, there is no such thing as summer. We should appreciate everything that nature has given us. Crying will not make the temperature go down."

What am I saying, God?

"Right," he replied, a small smile on his lips.

His reaction was exactly the opposite of what I expected. He was clearly impressed.

"So, Miss Advika," he said, looking at my name in the resume again, "you're a fresher, and the position you've applied for requires skills that you don't have." Furthermore, we rarely hire new employees. Why should we hire you then?" He inquired.

"Sir, you have answered the question on your own," his brow furrowed as I stated, "the reason I want to join your company is that I want to come in those rare people. I remember seeing your interviews in magazines and newspapers when I was a kid. I was inspired by you when I learned how you built this entire empire on your own. I've always wanted to do something similar to you and to do so, I'll need to work with you to learn new things and skills. When I saw this job opening in your company, I applied, and the recruiter must have seen something in me because he chose me. Don't think I'm bribing you to get this job; I'm just telling you what's on my mind. I'm not sure if I'll be chosen, but I can't pass up this opportunity to tell you what I think of you. You are a hero in my eyes, an inspiration to me. If I had the opportunity to work with you and learn from you, I would be the most lucid person on earth. I am very desperate and passionate about this" I told him everything that was in my heart honestly without caring what he would think about me.

My words were followed by a long and deep silence, during which he stared at me without blinking. It was normal at first, but as the silence grew longer, my heart began to race and my chest tightened as I became increasingly scared and nervous.

My blood pressure spiked from the moment he opened his mouth to the moment words came out of it. The fact that I am still alive astounded me!

"I am impressed," his words came as a cold splash to my face, relieving me of all the pressure, "you have those three qualities that I look for in an employee, and these are honesty, passion, and desperation." Miss Advika, I am ready to hire you...."

My jaw dropped as I heard the words that I had been waiting to hear for years.

"But ..."

His 'but' caused me to close my mouth and my heart to stop for a second.

"Not for the position for which you applied."

My shoulders sagged in disappointment.

"As you can see, this position requires a lot of experience and the right set of skills, which you do not currently have as a fresher. But, given your drive for success, I can't simply let you go, so I'll offer you a different job role. You can join if you are comfortable"

He gave me a few seconds to comprehend his words and he went on to say when I didn't react.

"My secretary used to be extremely busy. He gets irritated at times. I believe he requires assistance. I bring him everywhere I go and to every meeting. I don't believe there is a better position to learn new things than this one. So, I am ready to hire you as my assistant, and you must assist my assistant. You can be confident that you will be fairly compensated and will learn a lot. I'm not pressuring you in any way. You can only accept the offer if you want to!"

"Yes, I am ready."

I accepted the offer without hesitation!

Who would pass up such a golden opportunity?
