15| Emotionally shattered

Aadvika's POV

My eyes flew open, instantly alert, as I was jolted awake by the loud cries of my mother. Without hesitation, I rushed out of the room and into the living area, my heart pounding in my chest.

There, I found my mother sprawled on the couch, her face contorted in pain as tears streamed down her cheeks and at the same time, Garvit came out of his room. A glass of water was lying on the floor. Most probably she woke up to drink water. Garvit must have forgotten to keep it beside her at night.

"Mom" he sat on one side of Mother, the concern itching his features "What happened?"

"Pain, it is too painful. I can't bear it" The sound of pain in her voice was gut-wrenching as she replied, her voice strained

She rarely cries out of pain because she doesn't want to give us tension. But the fact that she was crying out so openly was evidence of the excruciating torment she was enduring.

Suddenly, Garvit's face crumpled, and he began to sob uncontrollably. It was a rare sight because from the day he has came to know about Father's truth he has stopped crying at least in front of us. He tries to show that he is strong but he is still a kid.

"Garvit don't cry," I asked him when I myself was on the verge of crying "We need to act quickly. Go and call a cab."

He nodded through his tears and dashed out of the house, clutching his mobile tightly.

"Aadu" my mom called me in her quivering voice.

I knelt beside my mother, my heart heavy with worry, and gently held her hand.  Her eyes were brimming with tears, her chin trembling and it was too painful for me to handle.

"Promise me," my mother's words were broken, her voice strained with pain, yet I managed to piece together her plea. "Promise me that you will take good care of yourself and Garvit."

Tears welled up in my eyes as I clutched her hand tightly, my heart aching at her words.

"Mom, why are you saying this? You are going to be fine. You are here with us."

She took a labored breath, her voice shaky but determined.

"I can't say these things to him. He is still young, but one of you has to understand that... that I don't have much time" she cried, hot thick tears rolling down the corner of her eyes.

I can't see her in this much pain. I myself is not mature enough to handle all this alone. I have already gone through a lot but now I will break completely if something happened to her. She is my life, my strength, my resilient pillar, my everything.

"Mom, please" my eyes welled up with tears and I couldn't hold them back anymore "Don't say such things. Nothing will happen to you. I am here and I will not let anything happen to you. I need you. I cannot take care of myself or Garvit" I stated firmly

She blinked back tears, her gaze locked onto mine. "But beta..."

Before she could continue, Garvit's voice broke through the tension in the room.

"Didi, the cabs are on strike. I tried to book one, but the app is down."

My heart sank as the realization hit me like a ton of bricks.

How could I have forgotten?

Shravan dropped me off at home after the office. The cab drivers are on strike today.

"Garvit, come here," Mother called him.

He sat down beside me, his eyes red and puffy from crying. With a gentle touch, my mother caressed his head.

"Promise me," her voice wavered but held an underlying urgency, "promise me that you will not fight with your sister."

His lower lip trembled, and his tears began to flow anew.

"Mom, please," he pleaded, his voice choked with emotion.

He also understood what his mother was trying to say.

"Promise me, Garvit," she insisted, her grip on his hand firm.

I was left momentary paralyzed in my position unable to think what should I do next as I heard the heart-wrenching conversation between Mother and Garvit.

"Didi" he turned to me, his call snapping me out of my reverie "what is she saying? Do something, please. I can't see her in pain"

Me too.

"Can you call your father, please? I want to hear his voice," my mother's voice was weak, a plea laced with pain.

"Mom, there is no need for that. He will not pick up." I told her.

"For the last time please, I am sure he will," she insisted, her lips pressed tightly together as she fought to suppress a cry of agony.

I was torn between fulfilling her wish and leaving her disappointed.

"Garvit please" she requested him with teary eyes when she was sure that I am not going to do that because I knew that he will never pick up.

He doesn't care in the daytime when it is midnight and I don't think that he would care even if we are dying.

Garvit, his own eyes glistening with tears, nodded in response to her plea. He couldn't see the mother in pain.

He reached for the phone, his fingers trembling slightly as he dialed our father's number. The seconds ticked by, each one stretching out in tense anticipation until it became painfully clear that the call was going unanswered.

"He's not picking up," Garvit whispered, his voice catching in his throat as he informed us.

Her eyes welled up once again and I could see the disappointment in her eyes. She still loves father so much that she would get ready to do anything to bring him back to our lives.

The clouds outside thunder and the mother once again started crying. With one arm she clutched her stomach while the other was desperately trying to reach out to me and Garvit at the same time. She was thrashing her legs.

"Didi, please do something. Please" Garvit begged me "You have to do something"

His last hope is me. He thinks that I could make everything right even when the ordeal in front of us was nightmarish.

I was thinking about what I could possibly do when Garvit's actions grabbed my attention.

He was attempting to lift our mother into his arms, his arms straining under the weight. The sight was both heart-wrenching and heartwarming, a display of his love and the lengths he was willing to go to save Mother.

"What are you doing, Garvit?"

I moved to him to push him away. I know he wants to help his mother but this way he will end up hurting himself.

"We need to take her to the hospital. We can't wait any longer," he responded, his words laced with a sense of urgency.

He is fifteen but he was trying his best to lift her so that we can take her to the hospital.

"Please, don't do that Gravit, you will end up hurting yourself"

"I don't care" Tears streamed down his cheeks as he cried out, "I just want my mom to be okay."

"Wait for me, here" I instructed him.

Wiping my tears, I went straight to my room to retrieve the phone. The only person that came to my head at that moment was Shravan. He had assured me that I could call him whenever I needed help. I know it is too late to disturb him, I had no other option left.

"Didi!" Garvit's panicked voice echoed from the hallway, breaking through my thoughts. Without hesitation, I rushed out of the room, my heart pounding with a mixture of fear and dread.

My eyes widened in horror as I reached the hall. My breath caught in my throat at what I saw in front of me. Mother was vomiting blood.

Time seemed to stand still as my hands shook, and my phone was about to slip from my grip. I have very limited time and I have to react quickly.

My hands shook when I dialed Shravan's number. I was continuously praying for him to pick up the call and thankfully he did after a few rings.

"Shravan," my voice trembled, the tears I had been holding back now streaming down my face, "we need help. It's an emergency. Please, please come to my home"

A loud sob escaped my lips.

"What happened?" He asked concern audible in his voice

"My mom, I am sorry to bother you at this time but we need to take her to the hospital urgently and the cab drivers are on strike. I am really sorry..." The cries made it hard for me to say anything clearly.

"Shh, Advika, it's ok... I am coming"

Before he could cut the call I could hear him running. I just hope that he comes before it gets too late.
