Chapter 9: Daddy Issues

"So, let me get this straight, you ripped my little brother's poster off of his wall because you got daddy issues?"

An eye opening question for me really. What was really more soul awaking, was meeting Ky's older sister. Head cheerleader Katerina. She had us seated on the floor in front of her after running in and seeing my and Ky's current situation.

"And, Ty having daddy issues excites you?" Katerina asked as she signed the question to Ky.

Ky looked mortified as he tried to hide his current situation under a pillow. Ky frantically stated to speak to his sister through sign language. His sister on the other hand speaks when she uses sign language.

"I will say what I sign because he has the right to know the conversation." Katerina ranted.

I felt bad for Ky. It looks like he gets bullied at home and at school. I feel even worse knowing that I played a part in it.

Ky must have noticed that I felt bad because he hit me in the face with his pillow. I must have shown my anger on my face, because Ky started laughing at me.

"I forgot, fighters communicate with their fist." Katerina said while signing. "Ky go talk to him about his daddy issues."

Ky was already on his feet as he removed two sets of boxing gloves from his closet. He attempted to hand me a pair.

"I don't box."

"He isn't asking you to box. He is asking you to talk to him." Katerina said as she left the room.

I grabbed the gloves and followed Ky outside. Fighters communicate with their fists. What does she mean by that? Why did she say fighter? Ky is a boxer.

When we made it outside Ky nodded at me. I knew at that moment that the match was about to start. I nodded back to start the match. Ky's movements were slow as he began to circle me. I tried not to trip over my feet as I struggled to stay parallel to Ky.

Boxing isn't just fighting, it's more like a dance. My father's voice echoed in my head. Why am I thinking about this now? I paid for my thought process when Ky charged in and punched the soul out of my body when he connected to my rib cage.

Focus Ty. You have to defend yourself. Go away old man.

Ky delivered a blow to my back before I was able to jump back.

"That was an illegal hit." I whined. Ky let out a light laugh before slowing down his movement and circling me again. He didn't have to hear what I said to know that he messed up.

Do you know why your mother called me T-Rex? It was because everything I did was slow. I walked so slow my dude. Even when I fought. My movements were slow. She meant it as an insult I swear, but in the end I fought like a Tyrannosaurus Rex.

Ky fights like my dad. He'll charge in and make you pay for your mistakes. Man this kid is annoying. He is preparing me to face my father.

"Dude, I am not going to fight my father." I said.

I don't know why I continue to try to talk to Ky. The kid can't hear me and just gave me this confused puppy dog look. It was kind of cute but mostly annoying. I want to hit him.

I lunged in and tried to punch Ky, however he easily dodged it. Every swing I took after that was dodged. Not even deflected.

Ky's speed picked up as his fighting style changed. Ky delivered quick jabs that connected every time. I felt defenseless as every technique I tried failed.

Every time I tried to change I failed.

You stepped in right? My father's voice echoed in my head.

Ky was delivering blow after blow into my body. Why would I want to step into that?

I told you not to pick fights. A T-Rex only strikes when their prey is close.

I stepped into one of Ky's punches. The look of fear came across his face. I only saw it for a second as I hit him as hard as I could.
