dan was a mess.
he was slumped against the wall, his hair a mess, tangled and falling around his face. pale skin, red eyes. he felt stupid, and helpless.
jarvis had come by a while before and gave him a shot in a suspicious red syringe, and dan figured that was why he was so weak. he had said 'just in case', and dan's mind was whirling as to what that meant. just in case what? dan wasn't a threat, he was a little boy who left flowers when he walked, and that was all he'd ever been.
he couldn't possibly be dangerous to a whole government system.
phil and eliza had arrived a while ago. dan wasn't sure how he knew, but he did. he could feel them.
dan's mouth was dry. his eyes traveled blankly down the path that led right to the crack under the door. dead flowers.
dan had attempted to do something with his powers to reach them, or at least let them know he was okay; he had been lying on his stomach as close as he could get to the door, his hands pressed against the cold ground. it had worked, slightly... a trail of roses had begun. but they hadn't gotten very far, falling apart and dying right before his eyes.
that's when dan had started to cry.
he cried harder than he had in ages, or possibly ever. he felt completely helpless, useless, and right then he let it out, even though he knew there was likely someone watching him one way or another. because he was hurt. his chest and head were aching and he felt so emotionally unstable that he had no idea what mood his flowers would display.
the answer was all of them.
dan stopped crying when he saw something happening from one of the teardrops that had landed on the floor, watching in awe. a small daisy sprouted from the concrete, but it looked healthy. it grew to full size in a matter of seconds. and then there was another, and another. full grown flowers of all colors were leading right to where he wanted them to be; the door.
he shifted to watch them, willing them to find his friends, praying it would work. if it didn't, he had no idea how he was going to get out of this place.
the flowers had died since then, and dan felt increasingly useless, and weak. he sighed, resting his head against the concrete, closing his eyes. there was just no point.
"eliza, for the last time, shut the fuck up."
dan sat up, his eyes widening. "phil...?"
the voice paused, and so did the footsteps that had been getting closer. finally, he spoke.
"dan?!"
more footsteps, jangling on the door. dan figured it was locked but there was a clicking noise, and it swung open. sure enough, phil and eliza, who was holding a bobby pin and rolling her eyes, were standing there.
"you would think a government establishment would have better locks..."
dan could hardly hear her. her voice sounded like it was underwater. his eyes were trained on phil.
phil nearly ran to him, dropping to his knees beside him. "oh m-my god, dan, are you okay-?"
dan nodded, staring at him. his heart felt like it could beat right out of his chest.
"i'm okay," he whispered. phil looked relieved.
"thank god."
phil met his eyes, grabbing his hand and squeezing gently. warmth spread from his fingertips through dan like an electric shock.
dan turned to eliza. "hi," he muttered shyly. phil made a face.
"don't say hi to her," he muttered, scowling. "she's a traitor."
dan's eyes widened, glancing between them as eliza scoffed.
"don't be dramatic."
phil whirled on her, glaring fiercely. "i'm not being dramatic. you gave dan to them, look at him. he's hurt. because of you."
dan blinked, surprised. he tugged on phil's sleeve until he looked at him.
"w-what...?"
phil sighed, biting his lip. he squeezed dan's hand again. "jarvis was paying her for information and stuff like that."
eliza huffed, approaching. "it seemed innocent. just stuff about your relationship, and how dan was doing..."
phil's jaw visibly tightened. "did you ever think that the fact he was paying you was suspicious enough?"
dan whimpered, and his chest ached again. "please don't fight."
both of their eyes turned to him. he bit his lip.
"we need to focus on getting out of here," he continued, glancing between them. "they're already giving me drugs..."
there was silence, and phil nodded. "alright," he said, his voice increasingly soft. "you're right."
before anything else could happen or anyone could say anything else, the metal door that phil and eliza had entered through slammed shut with a loud clang. dan jumped, and phil cursed.
this might be a bit harder than dan would have thought.
