CHAPTER 3

Avery's POV

Maria and I gathered the children from the orphanage and some of the caretakers for our long-awaited trip to the park. The excitement in the air was palpable as we boarded the bus that would take us to our destination.

The park was a sprawling green space, with tall trees providing shade and colourful flowers blooming in every corner. The sound of children's laughter and the chatter of families filled the air. The scent of freshly cut grass and blooming flowers filled my nostrils as I stepped off the bus, a wide smile spreading across my face.

With a contagious energy, the children eagerly bounded towards the playground. I followed closely behind, cheering and laughing with them. The warmth of the sun on my skin and the softness of the grass beneath my feet made it all the more enjoyable as I joined the children on the swings and slides.

"Look at me, Avery!" Sarah called out, her eyes sparkling with excitement. She climbed up the ladder to the slide, her small hands gripping the rungs tightly.

I watched as Sarah slid down, her laughter echoing in the air. "That was amazing, Sarah! You're such a brave girl," I said, giving her a high-five.

Sarah beamed with pride, her dimples showing. "This is so much fun!"

Glancing around the park, I took in the sights and sounds. Families were scattered throughout, enjoying picnics and playing games. The smell of freshly cooked food wafted through the air, making my stomach growl.

Maria, with the help of the caretakers, had set up a picnic area under a large oak tree. The children eagerly gathered around, their eyes widening at the sight of the delicious spread before them. Sandwiches, fruits, and homemade cookies were laid out on the checkered blanket.

I sat down beside Sarah and Maria, taking in the vibrant colours of the food and the aroma that filled the air. "Maria, everything looks so delicious. Thank you for organizing this," I said, my mouth watering.

Maria smiled warmly. "It's my pleasure, my dear. Seeing the children happy brings me joy."

As we ate, the children laughed and chattered, their voices mingling with the sounds of birds singing in the trees. I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment as I looked around at the happy faces. I knew that this day would be one that the children would remember for a long time.

After the picnic, the group spread out across the park, engaging in various activities. I found myself near a small pond, where a group of children were feeding the ducks. Their giggles and squeals of delight filled the air as the ducks quacked and splashed in the water.

I joined them, taking a handful of bread crumbs and tossing them into the pond. The children imitated my actions, their eyes wide with wonder as the ducks eagerly gathered around, nibbling at the crumbs.

"Look, Avery! The ducks like us!" one of the children exclaimed, pointing at the feathered creatures.

I laughed, my heart filled with joy. "Yes, they do! It's because you're all so kind and gentle."

The children beamed with pride, their eyes shining with innocence. As the day wore on, we explored the park further. We played tag, kicked around a soccer ball, and raced each other down a grassy hill. The park was alive with laughter and happiness, and I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the opportunity to be a part of it.

As the sun began to set, casting a warm orange glow over the park, I gathered the children and their belongings. The day had been filled with unforgettable moments and cherished memories. The children's faces were flushed with happiness, their tired but content expressions reflecting the joy they had experienced.

On the bus ride back to the orphanage, the children chattered excitedly about their favourite parts of the day. I listened intently, savouring their animated stories and laughter. I couldn't help but feel a deep sense of fulfilment knowing that I had been able to create a day of magic and happiness for them.

As we arrived at the orphanage, the other caretakers greeted us with warm smiles. They helped the children off the bus, their cheerful voices filling the air. I watched as the children ran towards them, eagerly sharing their adventures at the park.

Walking over to Maria, my heart overflowed with gratitude. "Thank you, Maria. Today was truly special."

Maria smiled, her eyes shining with happiness. "It was a team effort, Avery. We all wanted to give the children a day they would never forget."

I nodded, my gaze lingering on the children who were now engrossed in conversation with the caretakers. "I believe we succeeded," I said softly.

The sun had started to disappear beyond the horizon, casting a soft glow over the orphanage. The children and I returned inside, their energy from the day slowly subsiding. We gathered in the common room, where the caretakers joined us, their tired but content expressions mirroring those of the children.

I couldn't help but feel a lingering sense of tranquillity as I observed the room filled with laughter and shared stories. It was moments like these that reminded me of the true essence of the orphanage—a place where love and belonging intertwined, creating a haven for those who needed it most. I knew that the memories created today would remain etched in the hearts of those children, reminding them that happiness and joy could be found in the simplest of moments.

Just as the evening settled into a calm rhythm, a shadow of concern crossed one of the caretaker's faces. Sophia, a compassionate woman with a gentle demeanour, approached me with a grave expression.

"Avery, there's something I need to discuss with you," she said softly, her voice tinged with worry.

My brow furrowed, sensing the weight of Sophia's words. "What is it, Sophia? You seem troubled."

She took a deep breath, her eyes filled with a mix of sadness and apprehension. "It's about the orphanage, Avery. I overheard a conversation today between Maria and the new landlord. It seems we are facing a grave challenge."

My heart skipped a beat, the sense of impending doom weighing heavily upon me. "What do you mean, Sophia? Please, tell me."

Sophia hesitated for a moment, gathering her thoughts. "The landlord intends to sell the property if we can't meet the demands for a higher rental. It's been an ongoing problem for several months since the previous landlord sold this property to someone else."

My breath caught in my throat, the news hit me like a punch to the gut. The sanctuary I had known all my life was under threat, and the children's haven hung in the balance.

"How... how is this even possible?" I whispered, my voice filled with disbelief. "We've worked so hard to create a home for these children."

Sophia's voice trembled with emotion as she spoke. "I know, Avery. We've all poured our hearts into this place. But it seems we are facing an uphill battle. The landlord is determined to sell, and without meeting the new rental terms, we might lose everything."

A wave of sorrow washed over me, my mind racing with thoughts of the children's uncertain future. The walls of the orphanage, once a fortress of hope, now felt fragile, vulnerable to forces beyond our control.

"We can't let this happen," I said, my voice filled with determination. "We have to find a way to save the orphanage, for the sake of these children and all the love and support it represents."

Sophia nodded, her eyes reflecting both the weight of the situation and a glimmer of hope. "I couldn't agree more, Avery. We need to rally everyone, come up with a plan, and find a solution before it's too late."

My gaze moved across the room, taking in the faces of the children and the caretakers. Their dreams, their laughter, their shared moments—everything was at stake. I couldn't bear the thought of them losing their home, their sense of belonging.

Later that night, as the children settled into their beds, a lingering worry weighed heavily on my mind. The conversation with Sophia mentioning the looming threat of losing the orphanage had struck me like a bolt of lightning, and I couldn't bear the thought of the children losing their haven.

Unable to shake off my concerns, I stood outside Maria's room. I took a deep breath and knocked firmly on the door. After a brief moment, Maria opened it, her face reflecting a mix of surprise and weariness.

"Avery, is everything all right?" Maria asked, concern evident in her voice.

I hesitated, searching for the right words. The gravity of the situation weighed heavily on my tongue. "Maria, I heard something today that troubles me deeply. Sophia told me about the possibility of losing the orphanage. She said the landlord is trying to sell it unless we agree to pay a higher rental."

Maria's eyes widened in dismay, and a pang of worry crossed her features. She invited me into her room, sensing the need for a private conversation. As I entered Maria's room, my eyes immediately fell upon Maria's diary resting on the desk. Its worn pages spoke of Maria's thoughts and emotions. I glimpsed at it briefly, but quickly averted my eyes, respecting Maria's privacy.

Maria noticed my brief glimpse at the diary and swiftly closed it, placing it out of sight. She gave me a reassuring smile, understanding that I had seen the diary but didn't dwell on it. I, too, didn't mention it, knowing that Maria's diary was a personal space for her thoughts and reflections.

Returning my focus to the pressing matter at hand, I took a deep breath, mustering my determination. "Maria, I want to help. I want to do whatever I can to save the orphanage. I've been thinking, and there's an opportunity for me to work at a bookstore I know. The extra income could make a difference."

I stood before Maria, my heart pounding with a mix of trepidation. The room seemed to hold its breath as I prepared to lay out my heartfelt plea. The burden of responsibility pressed heavily upon me, knowing that my next words could shape the fate of the orphanage I held dear.

"Maria," I continued, my voice steady but tinged with urgency, "I cannot bear the thought of losing the orphanage, the only home I've ever known. These children, their smiles, their laughter—they are the heart and soul of this place. But without adequate support, their sanctuary may slip through our fingers."

Maria's face contorted with concern, mirroring the weight that I carried. "Avery, my dear, you have already given so much. You've dedicated your time and energy to taking care of the children, even setting aside your own studies. I worry that the weight of these responsibilities will crush you."

My eyes met Maria's, filled with unwavering determination. "Maria, my studies can wait. The orphanage cannot. These children deserve a future, a chance at a better life. And I refuse to let them down. I have been blessed with the love and care of this place, and it's time for me to give back. Let me take on the job to contribute financially and ensure the orphanage's survival."

Maria's brows furrowed, torn between admiration for my selflessness and a motherly instinct to protect me from the burdens of the world. "Avery, my sweet child, your devotion is remarkable. But you are still young, and I fear the toll it will take on you—physically, emotionally, and academically."

I reached out and gently took Maria's hands in my own, my touch warm and reassuring. "Maria, I understand your concern. But I am willing to make sacrifices. I believe in the strength of our bond and the collective power we possess. With the job, I can alleviate the financial strain and create stability for the orphanage. It won't be easy, but together, we can overcome any challenges that come our way."

Maria's eyes welled with tears, a testament to the deep love she held for me and the children under her care. She knew the weight of responsibility had settled on my young shoulders long before this conversation, and now, she saw the indomitable spirit that burned within me.

"Very well, Avery," Maria finally conceded, her voice laced with a mixture of pride and resignation. "If your heart insists on this path, who am I to stand in your way? But promise me this... Promise me that you will never bear this burden alone. Lean on me, lean on the staff, lean on the community that surrounds us. We are here to support you."

My eyes glistened with gratitude as I embraced Maria, feeling profound relief and determination. "Thank you, Maria. Your trust means the world to me. Together, we will find a way to save the orphanage."

With a final embrace and a shared look of determination, Maria and I concluded our conversation. My heart swelled with gratitude for Maria's understanding and support. I felt a renewed sense of purpose and an unwavering commitment to save the orphanage. As I retreated to my room, a mix of excitement and apprehension filled my thoughts.

Sitting on my bed, I reflected on the weight of the responsibility I had taken on. Despite the challenges ahead, I knew I couldn't turn away from the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the children I cared for deeply. Taking a deep breath, I closed my eyes. In the stillness of my room, a flicker of hope burned brightly within me, illuminating my path toward saving the orphanage.
