Prologue
"I'm afraid your daughter is unlikely to live past the age of 20."
The mother of a small, white haired girl covered her mouth in shock while the father wrapped an arm around his wife in an attempt to comfort her. However, anybody with good eyesight could tell that, he too, was in shock. They both glanced at the door where their daughter was waiting on the other side. She was only four years old. She was their little girl. So why...?
Why did she have to be cursed with such a quirk?
"Isn't-" The mother swallowed as a lump formed in her throat as she struggled to get the words out. "Isn't there anything we can do?"
The doctor gave her an apologetic look at the sound of her desperate tone.
"I'm sorry," He apologized as softly as he could when tears began to well up in the woman's eyes. "It appears that whatever is affecting her is a side effect of her quirk. All I can recommend is that she doesn't use her quirk as much as possible. Any form of strenuous activities or activities involving her quirk could possibly shorten her lifespan. I can offer some medicine that will help with the pain, but that's about it. I really am sorry about this."
"What are we going to tell her...?" The woman looked at her husband with a tear stricken face and it was all he could do not to cry along with her.
"I don't know..." He looked down as he hugged his wife. "I really don't know..."
"Her dream... She can no longer be a hero..."
"Who can't be a hero?" The parent's eyes snapped to the door at the sound of their little girl. The small, white haired girl seemed confused as she had walked in mid conversation, so she had no way of knowing they were talking about her. And she only frowned at the sight of her parents in tears. "What's the matter? Why are you guys cryin'?"
Another wave of tears swept over the mother as she scooped her child into a hug.
"I'm sorry..." She cried out. "I'm so sorry..."
"That's right! You shouldn't be saying that somebody can't be a hero." The young girl clearly didn't understand the situation yet. She was still completely oblivious and her innocence seemed to shine throughout the room as she 'scolded' her parents. "Anyone can become a hero if they put their minds to it! Though, I'll still be the best hero there is!"
At this, the girl's father could no longer hold on his tears as he also enveloped the girl in a hug. They just couldn't understand why it was their daughter that had to go through this. She was so young and innocent and kind. And yet, they were cursed with the knowledge that they would most likely end up outliving her. They'd watch her grow up only to watch her die while still young.
How were they going to handle this?
That was the only question running through their minds. However, they did know one thing as much as it broke their hearts. And, they knew that it would break their daughter's heart even more. But they just couldn't afford not to do this. They wanted to spend as much time with their daughter as possible.
So, they would never let her become a hero.
