Chapter 2

“What do you think she’s doing?” One of the teachers, the hero known as Waves, asked curiously as she and the other teachers watched a small, white haired girl climb up one of the buildings in Battle Center A.

All the teachers had been keeping a close eye on her as she easily took out the robots one by one before. She had even stopped a couple times to help a few struggling students. It was interesting to watch seeing as one would never guess such a seemingly frail girl to be capable of such power.

“She’s probably trying to get a better vantage point,” The principal, who already knew the girl’s quirk, told the others as he also watched curiously. The zero pointer had finally appeared, and the other students were all running away. “I’d suggest you watch carefully.”

**********

All the students looked around in confusion as all the robots in the area seemed to freeze up. They had been running away from the zero pointer, not even paying attention to the other robots around them. They weren’t so foolhardy to think that they could take such a monstrosity down. However, the students nearly froze themselves when they noticed that the zero pointer had frozen as well. In fact, now that they stopped to take a good look, it almost looked as though the robots were being slowly crushed. Meanwhile students that had been trapped underneath bits of rubble were freed as they were lifted up into the air before being set gently on the ground. And yet, they had no idea who could possibly be the cause of such a feat. Well, there was one person that noticed the cause.

It was the black haired boy.

He had been keeping an eye on the seemingly frail girl ever since the exam started. While she didn’t seem outwardly powerful or interesting in any manner, her aura seemed to draw him in. It was strange. She seemed to practically radiate power. At the same time, though, she seemed to radiate just as much frailty. He had convinced himself that making sure she didn’t get hurt was the only reason he was watching her. After all, out of everyone, she seemed the most likely to injure herself in this sort of exam. Unfortunately, his excuse didn’t seem to hold up too well as she easily destroyed robot after robot.

And now, she was destroying all of them at once. Yes, he had noticed her on the top of the building she had scaled. It was only after she outstretched her hand that everything had frozen. Though, it was a bit concerning when he noticed blood begin to dribble down the side of her mouth. Whatever her quirk was, it clearly had some dangerous side effects.

And soon enough, the timer rang out as the ten minutes had finally passed.

Everyone could only stare in amazement as the exam finally ended. None of them were able to get any more points after all the robots were crushed. However, they wouldn’t have been able to anyways considering they were all frozen at the sight before them. They were only broken out of their stupor by Recovery Girl who had come to heal anyone who may have been injured.

Thankfully, there weren’t very many who had been injured. And, despite not being injured himself, the black haired boy went up to the hero when he noticed that the white haired girl had yet to come down from the building. There was a possibility that the side effect of her quirk had gotten even worse whilst he had been looking away for a few seconds. Either way, he didn’t have a visual on her, so for all he knew, she could have collapsed or worse.

“Are you injured?” Recovery Girl asked the boy as he came up to her.

“Not at all,” His voice wasn’t overly deep, but it had a monotone to it that made it seem deeper than it actually was. And his blank stare made him all the more unnerving. Either way, he pointed to the top of the building that the one girl had been on. “But there was a girl on top of the building over there. She didn’t appear to be in the best condition.”

“Ah, you must be talking about Fujikawa Nozomi,” Recovery Girl knew exactly who the boy had been talking about. After all, her and the rest of the teachers had watched in surprise and concern as the girl had destroyed all of the robots. It was a magnificent feat, but what concerned them was the blood dribbling from her mouth as she used her quirk. It was even more concerning when she ended up collapsing after the exam ended. “Another teacher has already gone to retrieve her. She should be fine.”

Honestly, Recovery Girl had no way of knowing whether or not the girl would be fine seeing as she had yet to fully examine her condition. However, she decided it would be best to reassure the boy instead of giving the truth.

“I see,” That was all the boy needed to hear before he walked off. He supposed that the girl now known as Fujikawa Nozomi would be fine as long as she was with the heroes.

Meanwhile, with Nozomi, she had collapsed on top of the building and was breathing heavily as she tried to calm her heart rate. Every couple seconds she gave a small cough and spit out a bit of blood, and eventually, she wound up losing consciousness. It’s safe to say that the hero that came to get her was more than concerned when he saw the state the girl was in. He had never seen such a terrible side effect for a quirk. In any case, he made sure to get her to the infirmary as quickly as possible. It was there that Recovery Girl finally found out about Nozomi’s condition.

It was a couple of hours before she finally woke up. She let out a light groan as she sat up in the bed she had been placed in within the infirmary. At first she was a bit confused as to why she was in an unknown room. The blood had been cleaned off her mouth, and she felt a bit exhausted. Though, she supposed that it was a plus that she didn’t appear to have anymore injuries that she would have to cover up for her parents.

“You shouldn’t be in a school for heroes with a condition like that.” Nozomi nearly jumped at the sudden voice. Granted, her eyes also narrowed a bit at the statement. Whoever this was, they were treating her just like everybody else. “There’s a chance that you wouldn’t even survive until graduation if you keep on using your quirk in such a manner.”

It was then that Nozomi finally noticed the speaker. It was a little old woman sitting at a desk in the corner of the room. Nozomi recognized her almost immediately. The woman was, after all, the only reason why UA could go through with such a risky exam. She was the hero known as Recovery Girl, and Nozomi always had a high respect for the woman. Though, that respect was starting to dwindle after Recovery Girl’s previous statement.

“I know,” Recovery Girl seemed a bit surprised that Nozomi just smiled at the slightly forceful suggestion despite her having just basically shot the girl’s dream down. “That’s why I want to become a hero in the first place. I realize that I don’t have much time left, but being a hero is something I’ve always wanted to be. And if I have the power to become one, then I’ll be damn sure to become one. After all, if I’m going to die young anyways, I’d like to have done at least one worthwhile thing with my life.”

“...” Recovery Girl just gave the girl a strange look for a few seconds before finally sighing. “Well, you’re already as stubborn as any other hero. I’ll give you that…”

Nozomi grinned at that. If there was one thing that has helped her in life, it was definitely stubbornness. She had no shame in admitting how stubborn and tenacious she was. In fact, she deemed them to be her redeeming qualities. Unfortunately, her grin soon dropped as her face twisted to that of horror.

She had just thought of something rather terrifying.

“If I’m in the infirmary…” Nozomi gulped slightly as a bead of sweat ran down the side of her face. “Does that mean that you called my parents?”

“You can’t call somebody with a fake number on the records, now can you?” Nozomi sighed in relief with a sheepish grin at the accusatory look Recovery Girl was her.

“Sorry about that,” The pale girl rubbed the back of her head sheepishly as she apologized to the woman. “But I didn’t exactly tell my parents where I was going today. I had to sneak out of the house in order to come here.”

“Which means that your parents aren’t negligent to your condition at least.” Recovery Girl sighed once more. She wasn’t sure how kids could be so stubborn…

“Heheh,” Nozomi jumped out of the bed with a grin. “I should actually try and get back before they end up sending a search party… Thank you for helping me after I passed out!”

Recovery Girl didn’t have a chance to reply or stop the young girl as she quickly jumped out the window. The hero could only shake her head as she looked out the window to make sure Nozomi was okay. Despite being on the third floor, Nozomi had somehow managed to land without injury and was now dashing out of the school like she hadn’t just been laying in an infirmary bed for hours.

“Kids these days…”
