iv. Elsewhere
The world had changed. Eddie Kaspbrak stood, cold, silent, weightlessly. He absorbed the everything around him. But everything had changed. It was still his world, the world he knew. He saw the world he had lived in for fifteen years. He saw the school he attended, the water-tower he fell from, he even saw his limp body lying on the ground in a pool of his own blood.
It was unreal and Eddie wanted to scream. Could he scream? He didn't know.
"Fuck!" Eddie screeched. There was his answer. He very well, could scream. Though, who could hear him? He continued to look absorb his surroundings. It wasn't until he heard sirens in the distance, did he notice a hoard of his classmates exiting the building, only yards from his stiff body. He called out to them, fearing the worst.
Nothing. Their indistinguishable yelling and chatter was completely uninterrupted. They continued on, living. And Eddie didn't know what he was anymore. He wanted to panic but he couldn't seem to let out any of the things he knew he should've been feeling. He could only make noise and move. The rest, he'd have to figure out later.
He began moving through the street with ease. He felt light and empty but whole. It was all bizarre and he wanted to find his mommy. He didn't go to her, though. Couldn't bear the thought of any of this.
"Fuck, shit, and fuck," he let out, walking towards the only place he could think of — Bill's house. He knew it was still early in the day and Bill would still be in school but he needed help somehow. He just needed it.
"Where's my fucking spirit guide? Don't I get a reaper or an angel or something? For fuck's sake," Eddie screamed. He hates cursing so much alive but at this point who was going to notice.
In other words, (narrator clears throat) Eddie said fuck it.
Eddie could pin every thought in his head. His mind was clearer than it had ever been in his life. He understood so much about himself and his own subconscious and he felt the knowledge flow through him the more he moved. This had him feeling like he was on the right track for whatever it was he was supposed to be doing in the faded realm. He let the feelings and memories flood his being as his foots drifted just above the ground. He swore he could hear a song playing in his head and it got louder with each sway of his limbs.
Eddie began adding a hop to his step, enjoying the music for a second, thinking it might be heaven. His arms moved along with him and before he knew it he was dancing. Dancing along the sidewalk he ran down year after year, in avoidance of Henry and his goons. He pirouetted in the middle of the road as his earliest days came back to him.
His dancing proceeded as he saw flashes of his father's face in memories from when he was only a year old. What was this magic he had stumbled upon? Eddie was terrified to his core and yet he was dancing and a buzz had filled his soul. He knew he was alone and gone but he felt like the star of a movie. The earth in his reach was the set and the music was loud and clear. He was amazed at what the afterlife seemed to be offering him but he had questions. Was this all there was left? Would he continue to go on and see a light? A door? He had no way of knowing but he let himself bounce to the beat of the song, all the way to his best friend's home.
