The Issue of Money.
((The one good part about this section of the book is that my Dad owns his own business so I know exactly how self-owned businesses like Freddy Fazbear's work.))
"Well, this is it!" Scott stood on the Show Stage, looking out over every member of the (not all that large, he realised) Freddy Fazbear crew. "I'm sure we're all aware of the short time limit we have to make this nightmare of a place every little kid's dream, and I'm even more confident that if we all stick together, we can do it in half that time!"
"Excuse me!" Mike called out, "Do we have to call you 'Boss' now, Scott?"
Scott looked at Mike, "Yes, Michael, you have to call me Boss." He pointed over at Vincent without breaking eye-contact, "Except for Vincent. He has to call me 'sir'."
Mike's eyebrows raised, and he chuckled, "Damn. Someone got a whole lot sassier since they became Boss..."
"Thank you," Scott straightened back up, turning front on again to address everyone. "Right! What we will be doing today. Security guards: that's Jeremy, Mike, and Vincent, you will first of all clean up that godforsaken Office. I want all that rubbish gone."
"But, Boss!" Mike protested, "That cup of half-empty lemonade is part of the security guard code! It's been there since 1990. Nobody remembers who put it there, and nobody is rude enough to finish it." He shook his head, "Legendary."
A Rare Photo:
Scott winced, "It was you, Mike. The rest of us had a rule that we weren't going to pick up your rubbish for you, so we were waiting for you to throw it out... instead, you just ended up believing it was sacred."
"Aw..." Mike's shoulders slumped.
"Sorry, Mike," Scott frowned apologetically, "Oh well, we have to move on. You three will be making sure that Office ends up a night-shift man's dream, and that's because from now on there will be a night-shift every night, so I need all of you to be prepared to be called in to stay between the hours of midnight and six am! After you finish the Office, I want you to do the same to the Dining Hall, and the bathrooms-- no complaints, Mike!" Scott clapped his hands together, "Next! Fritz! You will be on animatronic duty. I'm afraid we only have one official technician here but you are not to carry the animatronics by yourself. You are to deactivate Freddy, Bonnie and Chica and with the help of Vincent, move them into the back-stage. Then..." Scott paused, breathing in and out, "Then you are to come and get me, and together, we'll deactivate Foxy. Got it?"
Fritz nodded at Scott from within the crowd, "Got it, Boss."
"Good. Kitchen ladies," Scott turned to face them, "Today is all about you. I want you all to go into the kitchen and take down everything. I want the kitchen to be completely bare. Then I want you to go through every piece of equipment and put everything that needs to be replaced aside. We're going to make your kitchen the best place to cook pizza in the world. That is, all of you except for Kayla. I need to talk to you, Kayla, so come see me in my office after this."
Kayla blinked up at him, looking somewhat concerned.
"And if anybody needs me? You know where to find me. I'll be contacting all our suppliers and banks and starting the long process of changing every aspect of the business over to my name. Are we all clear?"
The group of staff nodded at him.
"Good!" Scott jumped off the Show Stage, "Then go!"
The crowd burst into mutters, Scott could hear Mike very loudly complaining about having to scrub the female toilets, and Jeremy stuttering helplessly at Mike to calm down (God bless him, the poor child). He could hear the kitchen staff all ranting to each other about finally being paid some attention, saying that maybe this new boss would actually listen to their requirements. Everybody moved off to their respective chores, and all that was left in the Dining Hall was Scott and Kayla.
Kayla swallowed, "You, uh... wanted to see me, Sc-Boss?"
Scott smiled, "Just follow me into my office. We can talk there." He turned around and started towards the frosted glass doors beside the Show Stage that read 'Management'.
"Um..." Kayla's gentle voice piped up, as she skipped to catch up with Scott, "Uh, this is a stupid question, but... I'm not... in trouble, or anything, am I?"
Scott laughed, "In trouble? Of course not. I just thought you'd prefer if our conversation wasn't overheard by Micheal Jake Schmidt!"
"Oh, screw you, Boss," Mike called out from where he'd been hiding in the entrance to the bathrooms, waiting to listen in. "And don't use my full name. You know I hate it. Don't make me use yours."
Scott rolled his eyes and stopped outside the office to turn to Mike, "For your information, I think Keegan is a perfectly fitting middle name."
"Heh. I didn't say middle name. I said full name, Robert." Mike smirked mischievously, and disappeared back into the bathroom stalls.
Kayla blinked, "Scott Keegan Robert Adams?" She sniggered, "Robert? As in, Bob?" Another helpless giggle, "Scott Keegan Bob Adams."
Scott's face flushed. He pointed a warning finger, "I said you weren't in trouble, but you might just be if you continue like this."
"Yes- Yes, okay, Boss, but," Kayla snorted, "First, one question... does... Vincent know?"
"Oh, heavens," Scott's eyes widened, "Of course not! Who in his right mind would date Scott "Bob" Adams? Sometimes I wonder what my parents were thinking."
Kayla burst into laughter, "Oh my, it doesn't suit you at all!" Her shoulders shook, oblivious to Scott's face, which was turning redder and redder every second. "Bob! Oh, I'm going to call you that from now on!"
Scott huffed indignantly, filled with embarrassment and a sudden hatred for his parents. This had gone too far. "How's Oliver, Kayla?"
Kayla's giggling turned into choking in record speed.
Her face burned bright red, and whether entirely from the embarrassment or because she was actually choking Scott wasn't sure. He was suddenly struck with a fear that she might genuinely be unable to breathe.
"Oh, goodness gracious!" He patted her back, watching her with wide eyes, "I can't kill someone on my first day as manager!"
"No, I'm-" she coughed into her fist, clearing her throat, "I'm fine! You just- You caught me off guard, is all, um-" She coughed again, "What made you think I've been in contact with-"
"I think we better finish this conversation in the office," Scott interjected quickly, and Kayla nodded. She stepped inside the management office, and Scott followed her in, closing the door behind her.
Scott smiled at her, "Please, have a seat." He walked around the other side of the desk and sat down in William's old chair. It was almost as though he were a child again, sitting in this very seat when he could barely see over the desk, pretending to be the Boss.
No more pretending anymore.
Kayla sat down opposite him, "Um, so, like I said, what made you think I've been in contact with Oliver? We-We, it's not like we've been... talking, or anything!"
Scott just smiled, "Yes, well, next time you see him, could you let him know that I think I've got a position open for him? That is, of course, unless the idea of being stuck with Oliver in a kitchen for eight hours, 5 days a week is unappealing."
Kayla's eyes widened, "Uh- W-well, I-" She shook her head. And then nodded. "I mean, well- Now that you mention it, I do think I have his phone number somewhere. But, um... couldn't you have contacted him directly?"
"Ah, well..." Scott shrugged slightly, "I thought it would be nicer if you told him."
Kayla tilted her head, "But- How could you have known that... I've been... hanging out with him recently?"
Scott laughed. He leaned in to her across the table, "Kayla, honey, there's a way that Oliver looks at you that I've only seen him look at one other person with. Me." He smiled, "He may think I'm naive, but... I do notice when he gives those little puppy-dog eyes. I haven't talked to him about it because... sometimes, it's just... better to let someone come to their own terms with how they feel, and who they're really in love with, not do it for them."
Kayla nodded, her face tinging with pink, "You're such a good person, Scott. I can see why Oliver fell in love with you so easily."
Scott just smiled again, leaning back into his chair, "So, you think you could tell Oliver what I said, next time you two, uh, 'hang out'?"
Kayla giggled shyly, "Yeah. I'll let him know. He'll be super excited."
"Thank you. That's all I wanted to talk to you about," Scott said. He watched as Kayla stood up from her chair and straightened out her kitchen-staff uniform (a green shirt and skirt and a white apron). She started to walk towards the door when Scott decided on something. "Kayla?"
"Hmm?" She turned to look at him, "Yeah?"
Scott bit his lip, meeting her eyes. He stood up, out of his chair, and walked over to her. "There are plenty of better partners, better boyfriends, better husbands out there in the world than me, and Oliver is one of them. He's loyal, he's supportive, and once you've gained his trust, he would die for you. Don't let an old crush get in the way of a wonderful future."
Kayla's eyes widened. She blinked at Scott in silence for a moment. "I... I... won't. Thank you."
Scott grinned, "Keep your head up, Kayla. There are so many brighter things waiting for you in the road ahead, and I'll always be here for you. If not as a boyfriend, then at least as a best friend." He pulled her into a hug and she collapsed into him, the top of her curly head of hair just reaching Scott's nose. When she pulled away again, there were tears in her eyes.
"Thank you, Scott," she whispered. And then she sniffled, and muttered, "The ladies will be wondering where I am, I better..." her voice trailed off and she nodded, opening Scott's office door and stepping through.
"Thank you, Scott," she said once again, and then the door was closed.
Scott let out a deep breath, leaning against his desk. "Poor kids," he mumbled to himself. "I hope they'll be alright."
