chapter three.
TW: self harm
— the quarry
Adelaide through a tang-top and shorts on. She was going to the quarry with her friends and Ben. She pulled up to the edge of a cliff and saw the rest of them there.
They were having a spitting competition. "Gross, really?" She said as she walked up behind them.
The boys looked down from the cliff "So who's jumping first?" Richie asked.
"I will," a voice said behind them, they turned around seeing Beverly. Her hair was shorter now, like a lot shorter.
Beverly ran and jumped off the cliff "What the fuck!" Richie yelled, "Ah holy shit! We just got shown up by a girl!"
"Excuse me?" Adelaide questioned.
"Do we have to do that now?" Stanley asked.
"Yes!" Richie insisted.
Bill turned to Adelaide "How are you going to get down?" He asked, he knew she refused to go in water... they all did.
"I'll find a way down, trust me," she answered, "Go have fun,"
Beverly yelled for them to come down and the boys jumped. Adelaide watched before walking around to soon find a path leading down to a small area covered in rock, by where they were swimming. Adelaide had a bag against the side of her ribs as she sat down on the rock.
"Are you not swimming?" Beverly yelled over in Adelaide's direction, with a small frown on her face.
Adelaide shook her head, "No, not my thing," she said and watched her friends and Beverly swim together, splashing each other.
Bill eyeing the red-head newbie quite often. Adelaide watched, for some reason it upset her. Did she like Bill? No way... they'd known each other for so long.
After awhile everyone moved up by Adelaide, Beverly laid out a towel and laid down. Which caught the guy's attention as they stared at her, music blaring.
Adelaide rolled her eyes, resting her hands carefully in her lap. Her mind was on the situation from earlier that day. With the water... and her room.
Beverly began to roll over making the boys quickly turn away from Beverly. Richie began digging through Ben's backpack, "Books?" Richie exclaimed, "Ben, school's out for the summer!"
Richie pulled a few things out glancing at it. Ben sighed "Oh... that's not school stuff," Ben said politely, looking at Richie.
"Who sent you this?" Richie asked.
Ben groaned with annoyance and ripped it out of Richie's hands "No one!" He snapped, shoving whatever it was back in his backpack.
Richie continued to go through Ben's stuff, "Richie cmon that's his stuff," Adelaide told him.
Richie rolled his eyes and opened a green folder, catching Eddie's eye, "What's with all the history stuff?" Eddie asked.
"Oh well- when I first got here, I didn't really have anyone to hangout with," Ben explained as Richie passed it around. "So I just started spending time in the library,"
"You went to the library?" Richie asked, "On purpose?"
"Oh I wanna see," Beverly interrupted as she stood up and walked over. She took a seat on the other side of Bill as Adelaide finishes glancing at the newspaper. Beverly glanced at the paper as the others began to talk about the black spot.
Adelaide watched Bill's eyes raise up to Beverly, "Y-your hair," Bill said, Beverly blinked slowly and stared at Bill.
"You're hair's beautiful, Beverly," Ben finished and Bill turned to look at him.
"Oh," Beverly said, moving her red hair out of her face. "Thanks..."
"Here pass it over," Richie said, sticking his hand out and Bill handed him the stuff.
"What now?" Adelaide asked.
Richie ignored her, "Why is it all murder's and missing kids?" Richie asked.
Ben shook his head slowly, "Derry's not like any other town I've ever been in before," Ben said, "They did a study once and it turns out people die or disappear 6-times national average..."
Adelaide looked down at her hands in her lap, pulling her sleeves down, mumbling under her breath.
"You read that?" Beverly asked.
Ben nodded, "And that's just grown-ups," Ben added, "Kids are worse... way worse. I've got more stuff, if you wanna see it?"
Eddie quickly shook his head, but they ultimately agreed to go the Ben's house.
The group gathered their stuff together and began walking up to where they left their bikes. Beverly had walked there, so they had to walk their bikes back.
Adelaide trailed behind, Stanley slowed down to match her pace. "Hey..." he said quietly, glancing over at her.
"What?" She asked, "Oh hey," she looked up to see him.
"I've been trying to talk to you, but we're never alone," Stanley told her, glancing ahead at the rest of the group, who was out of earshot from them.
"Oh?" Adelaide questioned, "About what?"
"What you do... to yourself," Stanley said nervously.
Adelaide bit down on her lip, worried. "I uh, what?" She questioned.
"Don't play dumb Addie," Stanley told her, "I've seen your wrists, at school, during class... or while we park our bikes. I'm not oblivious,"
Adelaide looked up at him "I don't know what you're talking about," she said quickly and pushed past him to meet up with the rest of the group.
Stanley knew... who else knew?
