Nineteen

Dia couldn't bare the way Jack's face fell in that moment. The joy of being believed in fading as he realised that the belief didn't extended to Dia too. The winter spirit's eyes turned sad. The blue darkening and Dia had to tear his gaze away. "I.. it's"- Jack stuttered as he looked between Jaime and Dia. His face faltering as he tried to think of something to say.

Dia smiled softly and floated up to land next to him on the bed. He took Jack's hands and rubbed his thumbs in soothing circles across the cool skin. "It's okay", he reassured. "I am so happy for you". Jack opened his mouth as if to interrupt but Dia continued. "I didn't expect him to believe in me anyway. My holiday, my being, is based on culture. Jaime is of a different culture to mine, with different beliefs. It would be like you expecting to be believed in down in Rio where there is no snow. I don't expect him to believe in a holiday he does not celebrate".

Jack frowned. He raised one hand to cup Dia's cheek. The dark haired boy nuzzling into the touch. "But I want you to be happy. I want you to be believed in as that others can see you like I do. I want to share this feeling with you".

Dia smiled and pressed a kiss to Jack's palm. "And someday I will be believed in. That day is just not this one".

"Jack who are you a talking to?" Jaime asked. "Is there someone else here?"

Jack blinked and his hand dropped from Dia's face. He turned to Jaime nervously. "Uh yeah", he nodded. "There's another guardian here. You just can't see him because you don't believe in him".

Jaime frowned. "What's his name? I can believe in him!"

"Tell him it's okay if he doesn't", Dia said.

"Hey Jaime. It's okay. He doesn't mind if you don't believe in him". Jack placed a hand on Jaime's shoulder. The little boy looking crestfallen at not being able to help.

"But I want to see him too", he pouted.

Jack chuckled lightly. "I'll just describe him for you then. Maybe that will help". Jaime perked up and grinned. He seated himself down on the bed, Jack crossing his legs opposite him. Dia curled up next to him, head resting on Jack's shoulder. The touch a grounding comfort. Jack reached up and ran his fingers through Dia's fluffy dark hair.

"What's his name? Is he like you? Or is he more like the Easter bunny?" Jaime questioned excitedly. Dia pulled a face at being compared to Bunny. Jack snorted at the expression.

"No, he's definitely like me. He is a human boy, a bit shorter than me"-

"We are the same height", Dia interrupted.

"-Only a few centimetres shorter than me", Jack continued with a wide smirk. "His name is Dia De Los Muertos. The day of the dead. But we just call him Dia".

"Oh!" Jaime perked up. "My friend Caleb's family celebrates that. They have a orfrenda". His tongue stumbled over the unfamiliar word.

"Ofrenda", Dia corrected. Jack repeating the correction.

Jaime nodded. "Yeah. That's it. Where they put candles and photos of family who have died. Caleb's mum decorates it with rose petals".

Dia smiled. "That's so their loved ones can visit. It's nice but such a pain for the ghosts who deal with the boarders. Every year is have to walk around the world to create the path. It's a long walk but fun. Afterwards La Muerte throws a big party. She's the ruler of the dead. I'm just a envoy by comparison. She can't be on this world much so I was chosen to fill out her duties here by opening the boarder and creating the path". He broke off in the silence. Jack was listening to him with a slight smile but Jaime looked confused.

"Jack?" Jaime asked. "Was Dia speaking? What did he say?"

"He was explaining about La Muerte to me", Jack replied. Jaime nodded.

"What does Dia look like?"

"Well", Jack turned and looked Dia over slowly. Dia fidgeted as Jack thought. "He is wearing a baggy white shirt tucked into purple trousers. Like me, he is not wearing shoes. There are probably about fifty purple and gold scarves tied round his waist".

"I only have eight", Dia grinned. The bells of one jingling as he shifted.

"And they sound like ringing bells when he walks. His skin is a warm copper and he has fluffy black hair that comes down to here", Jack mimed the cut of Dia's hair. Jaime giggling. The boy listening intently to every word. "And he has these beautiful green eyes. They look like emeralds!"

Dia flushed at the praise. He poked Jack in the side. "Stop. Jaime doesn't need petals all over his room", he warned jokingly. Jack blinked, eyes lighting up with an idea. Dia wasn't sure if he liked the look on the white haired boy's face.

"As I was saying", Jack continued after a brief pause. "Dia is really pretty. He travels around the world to attend funerals and offer the mourners warmth. It's really amazing".

"That's so nice!" Jaime exclaimed. "Can he do other cool stuff too?"

"Yeah! He ties his scarves around his hands and they catch fire! Also he can make rose petals appear! And sometimes when he is not concentrating, his whole body glows like a star! It's so pretty!"

Jaime giggled. "You like him", he sang in true child fashion.

Jack nodded, grin widening as his eyes darted back to Dia. "Yes I do".

"I like you to", Dia replied softly. Jack opened his mouth to say something else when a crash sounded outside. Instantly Dia was on his feet and sticking his head out the window. Jack and Jaime on his heels. "It's North! Jack bring Jaime!" He exclaimed as he climbed out of the window.

"Ready to meet the others?" Jack asked.

"They're here!" Jaime shouted. "Yes!" Jack scooped the boy up and they were soon flying out of the window to the road after Dia.

The sleigh had collided messily with a telephone pole on the way down. The reindeer running off as the wooden contraption creaked and groaned. "It's official", North groaned loudly as he stumbled out. "My powers are kaput". He leaned heavily on his sword, using it as a cane. At his side, Tooth perked up upon seeing them.

"Jack! Dia!" She exclaimed. She tried to fly towards them but her wings gave out and she fell to the ground. Dia caught her and helped her to her feet. Her legs unsteady from lack of use.

"Are you okay." He asked worriedly.

"Are you okay?" Tooth returned. "You were gone! Did Pitch get you?" She scanned him over for anything wrong.

Dia smiled, her concern warming him. "I'm okay Tooth. Jack saved me".

"Jack", North grunted at the winter boy. "What are you doing here?"

Jack grinned. "Same as you". He turned and revealed Jaime standing behind him.

Tooth and North visibly straightened, faces lighting up with relief. "The last light".

Jaime was beaming as he ran forwards. "It is you! I knew it wasn't a dream!" He turned to Jack and tugged on the sleeve of his hoodie with excitement.

"Jack!" North breathed. "He sees you!"

Jack's face fell slightly. "He can't see Dia though". Tooth shot him a sad look but Dia shrugged it off.

"It's cool", he smiled. "He doesn't celebrate my holiday, so I didn't expect him too. He knows I'm here anyway". He grinned at them then frowned. "Where's Bunny?"

North and Tooth grimaced. "Loosing Easter took its toll on all of us", North spoke. "Bunny most of all". At his words a small grey rabbit hopped out of the sleigh. Dia recognised the distinct patterns on the fur and covered his mouth as not to laugh. Jack sighed but Dia could tell that he was trying not to giggle.

Jaime had no such worries and gave a chuckle. "That's the Easter bunny? But he's so fluffy".

Bunny kept up onto two legs and glared. "Now somebody sees me! Where were you about and hour ago mate?"

"What happened to him?" Jaime asked. "He used to be huge and cool but now he's cute". He reached out and scratched Bunny's fur. The rabbit thumped his legs a few times at the attention before regaining his senses and nocking Jaime's hand away.

"Did you tell him to say that?" He accused Jack. He hopped agilely down onto the floor and kicked his back legs threateningly. "Come on, let's have it. Me and you". Dia was sniggering behind his hands now and Jack was fighting a smile.

"No, actually he told me you were real. Just when I was starting to think that maybe you weren't".

Bunny blinked at Jaime then at Jack and Dia. "He made you believe? In me?" Then he smiled. Jack and Dia smiling back.
