"Jack!" North exclaimed as Jack landed on the grass. "Where were you?" Jack opened his mouth to answer but no words came out. North's shoulders sagged defeatedly. "The nightmares attacked the tunnels. They smashed every egg, destroyed every basket. They took Dia". North sighed heavily.

"Jack!" Tooth exclaimed as she flew over. She went to hug him but fluttered back in surprise upon noticing what was in his hand. "Where did you get that?"

"I was... it's..." Jack fumbled for words.

Tooth interrupted him. "Where's Dia? He's gone missing. Where's baby tooth?" She looked around as if both of them would appear in the air next to him. Jack dropped his head in guilt. Tooth seemed to read his reply from his expression. Her hands came up to cover her mouth and she fluttered back even further. "Jack", her tone was shocked. "What have you done?"

"That is why you weren't here?" North asked angrily. "You were with pitch?"

"No!" Jack waved his arms desperately. "Listen, listen. I'm sorry. I didn't mean for this to happen".

"He has to go", Bunny's cold voice sounded from behind him. The tall rabbit was glaring down at the white haired boy furiously. "We should have never of trusted you! Or that skull boy! Jack jumped away from Bunny, face torn with horror.

Bunny sighed, anger fading into sadness. "Easter is new hope. New beginnings. New life. And now it's gone". His ears dropped and he walked away.

Jack turned to North and tooth in hope they would say something but they too turned rather than face him. Jack pulled the little wooden baby north had given him from his pocket. He looked at the big blue eyes of wonder, then he tossed it onto the grass and flew away.

——

"Arrrgggghhhhh!" Jack's angered cry echoed over the mountains as he raised his arm to throw the box into the sea. The artic wind wailed around him. At the highest point of his curve, his arm dropped and Jack sighed. He stared at the golden baby tooth box of memories with mixed feelings.

"I thought this might happen. I was just trying to show you that", Pitch spoke from behind him. Jack groaned and turned to see the boogeyman standing in the snow a few feet away. "But I understand".

A bolt of frost came pelting to wards him. Pitch deflected it with a wave of black sand. Jack took the opportunity to flip up in the air over him and attack him from behind. Pitch deflected that one too. "You don't know anything!"

"Don't you think I don't know what it's like to be cast out?" Pitch Shouted. He sent two waves of black sand which Jack nimbly dodged. Jack screamed as he sent sparking bolts of frost hurtling at his enemy. "To not be believed in?" The combination and ferocity of the short battle sent snow billowing up around them. Jack landed, unable to see where pitch had gone.

"To long for a family..." Jack whirled and pointed his staff at the boogeyman. Pitch raised his hands pleadingly. But something made Jack hesitate. Pitch continued talking. "All those years in the shadows. I thought that no one else knows what this feels like. But now I see I was wrong", Jack's staff lowered and Pitch stepped forwards.

"You don't have to be alone Jack. I believe in you. And I know children will too".

"In me?" Jack repeated numbly.

"Yes! Look at what we can do", Pitch exclaimed excitedly. He gestured to a towering spiky sculpture of frost and black sand. The result of their combined attacks. "What goes together better than cold and dark? We can make them believe. We'll give them a world where everything, everything is"-

"Pitch black?" Jack asked.

Pitch faltered. "And Jack Frost, too", he added. "They'll believe in both of us".

"No", Jack replied firmly. "They'll fear both of us and that's not what I want. Now, leave me alone". Jack turned to walk away, missing how pitch's expression hardened.

"Very well, if you want to be left alone. I'll leave you alone. But first". He waved a hand in the air and a shadow formed. Dia fell through it, sprawling in the snow with a thud. Jack turned and felt his heart stop.

"Dia!"

"Uh uh", pitch smirked as Jack raised his staff. Pitch grabbed Dia by the hair and pulled him onto his knees. Dia groaned, green eyes only partially opened. He was a mess. Clothes dirty from black sand, two purple scarves hanging in tatters round his wrists. His makeup was partially rubbed off. The white paint smudged round his face and his green eyes were droopy. "You don't want to be doing that Jack".

"Let him go!" Jack commanded.

"The staff Jack!" Pitch shouted. He tugged harder on Dia's hair and the boy gasped lightly in pain. He shifted and something gold shone in his pocket.

"You have a bad habit of interfering. Now hand it over and I'll let him go". Jack hesitated, grip on the wood becoming weak.

"Don't", Dia coughed. His voice was horse and dry, lips cracked. Destroying his spiritual weapons, part of his power, had taken a hug toll on him. Jack gritted his teeth. For a minute, him and pitch were at an impasse. Then Jack lowered his arms and held out his staff. Pitch reached forwards with his spare hand and snatched it out of his grasp. It was like giving away a piece of himself.

"Alright", Jack said, trying to breathe evenly. "Now let him go".

Pitch smirked smugly. "No I don't think I will". Jack's eyes widened.

At that point, Dia chose to kick Pitch's feet out from under him. The dark robes man went sprawling in the snow. His grip didn't loosen and Dia was pulled harshly after him. Pitch exclaimed angrily and he got to his feet. "You annoying little child!" He snarled. Jack could do nothing but watch and black sand enveloped Dia and threw him into the cliff face behind him. Dia hit the stone then fell as limp as a rag doll, disappearing into a ravine.

"Dia!" Jack called. He made to move towards Pitch but the man held up his staff. There was a clean snap as the wood broke and Jack crumpled, feeling like he had been punched in the gut. A second wave of black sand swept him up and threw him too into the wall of ice. Jack hit it with a painful crack before he was falling. He landed next to Dia in the snow. Both boys limp and broken.

Above them, Pitch chuckled as he threw down the broken pieces of Jack's staff.

They clattered to the floor.
