TW: Blood
--
Hobi shoved yet another tree branch out of his face. "Who the hell picked this place?" He was sweating, it had been a perilous journey through the woods to get to their camping spot. All of the members were being wacked with random branches, tripping over rocks and stumps, and Taehyung had even gotten his foot stuck in mud at least three times by now.
"Jimin did." Yoongi pointed to Jimin, ready to release full blame on him for picking this place.
"Hey! I just wanted something away from the public, and this was the most secluded place I could find!" Jimin defended his choice. "Once we get there it won't be so bad. Being off the grid will be good for us!"
"If we even make it there!" Jin was pulling leaves out of his hair. "How has this trail not been maintained at all, yet they expect people to camp here?!" He had the most right to complain, considering he was carrying the majority of the heavy camping equipment.
"I think it's cool," Jungkook smiled. Jin stopped and stared at Jungkook with an annoyed expression. He dropped all of the camping equipment on the ground and gestured to it while speaking to Jungkook. "Alright, then, if it's so cool then it's your turn to carry all of this stuff!"
Jungkook backed up. "Did I say cool? I meant to say this is a really tough and difficult journey. My legs hurt. My arms hurt. Everything hurts. I can't lift a thing, hyung." He widened his eyes and puffed out his bottom lip to Jin.
Taehyung, Jimin, and Yoongi were all standing behind the maknae trying to hide their giggling.
Jin glared at the youngest as he slowly picked up all of the equipment again. He whispered under his breath as he continued walking. Be the oldest, they said. It will be fun, they said.
Through a clearing in the trees, an empty space was finally visible. Namjoon stopped suddenly and everyone bumped into him. "I see it!"
"Then keep going! Why stop?!" Yoongi scolded as he had to fix his shoe after stumbling backwards. Bumping into Namjoon was like bumping into a giant boulder.
They made their way to the clearing and were relieved to finally be able to breathe for what felt like the first time since stepping out of the car. The journey through the woods was a disaster. With the trail not having been maintained they could barely even see three steps ahead of them because the brush was so thick. They only found the clearing because Taehyung had a really good sense of direction and always found all of the trail markers that guided their path.
They set up camp. They had brought one main tent that they'd all share, since it fit 10 people anyway, there was more than enough room in it. Yoongi got a fire started in the fire pit, as it was fall and the temperature tended to drop at night and the day was slowly coming to an end. There was firewood set up right next to the pit, so thankfully nobody would have to go out and find some, even though doing that would be impossible anyway.
Once the tent, cooking supplies, and chairs were set up the members finally had time to relax and enjoy their stay. As soon as the three maknae's sat down by the fire Jin walked over and pointed at them.
"I know how adventurous you three like to get, especially when we go camping. However," Jin gestured to the dense woods surrounding them. "No adventuring in this. It's too dangerous."
"But hyung-" Jungkook frowned. He very much wanted to adventure in this.
Yoongi stepped over and immediately backed Jin up before Jungkook could get another word in. "No, not but hyung. You heard him. You three are to stay here where we can all keep an eye on you. No venturing off into these woods. Who the hell knows what's out there. Got it?"
"I have no plans of exploring that mess." Taehyung looked to Jimin and Jimin agreed. The walk to the sight was enough exploring. Now all four of them were staring at Jungkook, waiting for him to accept the rules.
"Okay, fine. No exploring. Got it." He crossed his arms and sat back in his chair, smiling.
"What?" Jin raised an eyebrow.
"I'll just come back here on my own another time to explore the place!" Jungkook told his hyung.
Yoongi turned to Jin. "Who gave him to us and why did we decide to keep him?"
Jin started running at Jungkook, and the maknae got up and sprinted away as he was being playfully chased by his hyung. His favorite thing in the entire world was to make Jin's life a living hell, but all in good fun. Jin wouldn't have it any other way either.
Most of the time.
Namjoon and Hobi started shouting for everyone to get started on cooking.
"I don't want to starve to death in the middle of nowhere, thank you very much." Hobi was already filling pots with water to boil. The others got to helping and they had tasty ramen and pork for dinner.
The time passed quickly as the boys had fun playing games, telling stories, and cleaning up a bit before all heading into the tent and curling up to fall asleep. With the journey to the camp site that they had taken, everyone was pretty exhausted and passed out quickly. The tent was set up not too far from the fire pit, so it kept them warm for the most part.
However, in the middle of the night, Jungkook woke up freezing. Even sandwiched between all his hyungs, he found himself shivering. The blankets were not helping all. He grabbed a flashlight and saw that Hobi and Yoongi were both shivering under their blankets, so he took his and put it over them. He noticed how dark it was outside and knew the fire had gone out.
I'll put a few more logs in to warm everyone back up!
He quietly ventured out of the tent. It was freezing out. He walked over to the fire pit ready to throw some logs into it to get the fire going again to realize there wasn't enough left to get the fire restarted.
He instantly panicked.
There's not enough wood. But it's so cold out we need the fire. Hyungs will all freeze to death in their sleep if I don't get it started again. I need more wood.
He shined the flashlight into the woods. Jin hyungie and Yoongi hyung said not to go in the woods, but I'm sure I can get some stuff from the wood line.
He made his way over to the line of trees that surrounded the campsite. He pointed his flashlight to the ground hoping that he'd discover a few logs he could throw into the fire pit, but all he was finding was tiny little branches and twigs that wouldn't work at all. He started to shiver, as being even further from the small embers burning in the pit was already taking it's toll on him.
Shit. There's nothing here.
He then figured just a few steps into the forest, he'd surely find some wood. He kept his flashlight on the ground, kicking aside more branches and stones to try and find some nice big logs for the pit.
He wasn't paying attention to just how far into the woods he was actually walking.
There's got to be something here somewhere. Aish.
He finally picked his head up and lifted his flashlight to see nothing around him but dense forest. He quickly spun around, trying to figure out which way he'd just came from.
Oh..oh no... no no no...
He didn't recognize anything and had no clue which way was the correct way back to camp.
Shit. Shit. Shit.
Panic set in quickly. He gripped his chest and sucked in a big breath, the cold night air stinging his lungs. He didn't know what to do. He didn't want to move in case he got more lost, but also knew he couldn't stand there all night. He decided to scream for help, hoping he was still close enough to the camp that the others would wake up and hear him. He clasped his hands around his mouth so his voice would travel farther. "Hyungs!"
He waited in silence but heard no response. "Hyungs! Help!"
Still nothing.
He waited for a few minutes but there was no sign of anyone hearing him and coming to find him. His heart rate got even faster as he started to hyperventilate and cry. Then, as if being lost wasn't scaring the hell out of him enough already, he heard something rustling in the thick of the woods and he knew it was not one of his hyungs coming to his rescue. He heard a low growl and fight or flight kicked in.
For him, it was flight.
He took off as fast as he could through the woods in a desperate attempt to escape from whatever the hell it was he just heard. Running was difficult. He had to fight against the dense trees and bushes. He felt thorns smack him in his face and could feel small traces of blood mix with the stinging air. I don't want to die. I don't want to die. That was all that was running through his head. He had no destination. His only goal right now was to outrun whatever he heard. He didn't hear anything chasing him but he wasn't willing to take chances.
Due to the fact he could see barely two feet in front of him, as the flashlight wasn't much help in these woods, he failed to see the slope that he'd ran out on, and his body dropped and started tumbling downward. It wasn't a far fall, but he tried to desperately grab at whatever he could on his way down. More branches caught him, but when he landed he'd slammed into some trees that broke apart. One of the branches fell on top of him, pinning his entire body face down into the dirt. His breath left him as he felt the weight of the branch land on his back and crush his ribs into the ground. He felt rocks digging into his ribs and chest with every breath he tried taking.
He was completely panicking. He tried squirming out from beneath it but it wouldn't budge at all. He tried clawing at the dirt around himself to get free but everything hurt too much. He couldn't do it. He felt his tears and blood soaking his face. His body was trembling uncontrollably as pain shot through him.
"No, please no," he whimpered to himself. "I...I can't be stuck. No. It hurts. Ahh!" He couldn't move. Any movement sent excruciating pain through his ribs and stomach. He knew one of his ribs had to be cracked, at the least. The weight of the branch was pressing so hard onto him that his ribs were too constricted against the ground for him to suck in any good amount of oxygen.
"H....h...help..." He coughed and gagged. He could feel something wet seeping from underneath him and he knew it was his stomach bleeding. He could feel the sting of it being scratched up from the rocks and branches he'd landed on.
"H...hyungs..." He couldn't get enough air in him to scream loud enough. It hurt too much but he also knew that not at least trying to muster enough strength to scream would mean certain death. He knew everyone was sleeping which tore his heart apart because deep down he knew that meant that nobody was looking for him.
He tried to suck in as much air as his body would allow. "Hyungs! Help! Jin! Yoongi! Jim-" he had to stop as he ran out of breath. Then he tried again. "Joonie! Tae! Hel-" he fell into a coughing fit and whimpered at the continuous sharp pains. He felt like the pain alone would kill him. It hurt way too badly.
He dropped his face into the dirt and didn't care about it mixing with his tears and blood. I'm going to die here. I'm sorry Jin and Yoongi for not listening. I just wanted firewood. Stupid. Stupid maknae! Why can't you ever listen to anyone?! But...hyungs looked cold...I was trying to help..
He felt lightheaded as he cried harder. The air started to feel different. He couldn't breathe. He knew he was going to pass out soon. He figured he'd use the last remaining strength left within his soul to try one more time to scream for help. As loud as humanly possible.
This is it. This is the last one. If it doesn't work, I'm sorry for getting myself into this, hyungies.
With all the oxygen he could get into his lungs he tried one last time.
"HELP!"
His face dropped back into the dirt as he became even more disoriented. He knew he wouldn't be able to scream again. He knew all there was left to do was either be saved soon, or die here like this.
--
Taehyung and Jimin both woke up to a loud noise coming from the woods. Taehyung whispered to Jimin. "Did I just imagine that noise or did you hear it too?"
Jimin knew that the two of them weren't hallucinating. Something had woken them both up. "It sounded like someone screaming..." Jimin could hear the rest of the members snoring and sleeping peacefully. He grabbed his own flashlight and turned it on to look at his members to make sure everyone was okay.
Taehyung and Jimin both noticed immediately that Jungkook wasn't in that tent with them.
"Where...the hell.." Taehyung started to whisper, but he and Jimin both paused and stared at each other when they had the same question race through their minds. Was it Jungkook that just screamed?
They both raced out of the tent, and the first thing they were hit with was the insane cold. Jimin and Taehyung both looked around the site to see if maybe Jungkook had simply gone to the bathroom. When they couldn't find him, that's when the real panic started.
"Hyungs!" Taehyung screamed as he ran back into the tent. "Hyungs wake up! Problem! We have a big problem!"
All of the hyungs were woken up in a slight panic with how badly Taehyung was freaking out.
"You better have a damn good excuse for waking me up! It's the middle of the night!" Jin scolded.
Jimin was now standing right next to Taehyung, panic written all over his face. "Jungkook is missing! We heard someone scream and it woke us up, and Jungkookie is missing!"
Jin was then the first one to shoot right out of the tent, the others running out behind him. They all grabbed flashlights.
"What the hell do you mean Jungkook is missing?!" Yoongi screamed. He looked around to see that his maknae was nowhere in sight. "We specifically told him, well all three of you, not to go anywhere! Where would he have gone?!"
"Don't look at us hyung, we were asleep! We don't know where he went or why!" Taehyung defended his and Jimin's innocence. For once they weren't involved in their usual maknae line shenanigans. They didn't know anything more than the rest of the hyungs. All they knew was that someone had screamed, and their youngest was missing. Two terrifying things to have happening at the same time.
"Maknae?!" Namjoon yelled out into the woods. "Jungkook-ah?!"
"Jungkookie!" Jin screamed next. "Oh, my baby. Please be okay!"
All of them were running around in a frenzy with nothing but flashlights. It was freezing and with every scream they could see their breath in front of their faces. They were shivering and it only scared them more to think that if Jungkook was lost in the woods somewhere, and had screamed, they knew he had to be scared, freezing, and hurt.
"Jeon Jungkook!" Yoongi screamed and his voice echoed through the woods so loudly they could actually hear animals start to scatter.
"If you can hear me, answer your hyungs right now Koo! Where are you?!" Yoongi kept screaming. "If that was you screaming, scream again!"
The hyungs listened silently but heard nothing.
Hobi took a deep breath and turned to the others. "We...we have to go in...we have to find him..if he's hurt.." He gulped. He clenched his jaw to try and hold back his tears but it didn't work. The tears flowed anyway.
The hyungs all furrowed their brows at each other. They knew it was dangerous but they knew Hobi was right. They didn't have a choice in this matter. They had to go in and find Jungkook. Taehyung grabbed a pocket knife and said he was going to use it to make marks on the trees so they'd be able to find their way back to the campsite.
"We don't even know which way he could have gone...he could be anywhere." Namjoon screamed for Jungkook again and they listened silently.
And they heard another scream.
Jungkook had heard them. He hadn't completely passed out yet, and although he thought he didn't have anything left to give after that last scream, once he heard Namjoon's voice shoot through the woods it had brought him back to slight consciousness and a new sense of survival coursed through him. He gathered his strength to scream again.
"Jungkook!" Jimin shouted. "Jungkookie we're coming!"
They all booked it into the woods in the direction the scream came from.
"Keep yelling, maknae! Hyungs are coming to you! We're coming! Can you scream again for hyungs?!" Jin's adrenaline had him running through the dense forest in overdrive. He would find and save that boy.
"Help!" The shouting from Jungkook was quieter and weaker, but the hyungs were getting so close to him now that Jungkook was able to get away with not screaming so loudly.
Finally, they found him.
Jungkook tried reaching his hand out but he could barely move. His voice was shot now and his breaths were shallow. He couldn't even feel his body anymore. Even his ribs and stomach had gone numb and he couldn't feel the sensation of his stomach bleeding or the rocks and sticks digging into him. "H...hyungs..." he faintly whispered.
"My baby!" Hobi screamed. He dove down next to Jungkook. All of them were freaking the hell out seeing their maknae trapped under a giant tree branch and being covered in tears and blood. Hobi wiped Jungkook's face. "Oh. Oh our baby. We're going to free you. Okay? We're going to get you out of here!"
The hyungs wasted no time. All six of them grabbed different parts of the branch and were able to lift it just enough. Taehyung let go to get down and pull Jungkook out from under it before the others lost their grip from the weight and dropped it again.
Taehyung pulled Jungkook up into his arms but the youngest screamed and withered in pain.
"Hey, be careful with him! We don't know what might be broken!" Yoongi lightly scolded. He was in overprotective mode now.
Jungkook's entire shirt was caked with blood and they could all see the scrapes and punctures that he'd sustained. He was hyperventilating badly now, as if he needed to suck in all of the oxygen in the world to refill his lungs.
"H..hyungs..." he gasped.
"Shh, no. It's okay, just breathe." Namjoon wiped the caked hair from Jungkook's forehead. The members gathered around him and did their best to wipe off the blood and dirt. Jin leaned in and rubbed Jungkook's chest. It was clear he was having too hard of a time breathing. The youngest clutched his chest and ribs and wined in pain, screaming and crying.
Jimin lifted Jungkook's shirt more. He thought he was going to be sick. All of them gasped and felt sick to their stomachs when they saw that Jungkook definitely had a broken rib...because they could see it piercing out of his skin.
"What..what do we do...we need to get him out of here.." Taehyung was a mess of tears. He felt useless as a hyung. He wished he could take Jungkook's pain away. He wished it could have been him.
Namjoon stood up. "Well there's only one thing we can do. He needs to get to the hospital." He knelt down in front of Jungkook. "I'm sorry to do this to you, this is going to hurt really badly, but I'm going to carry you. All the way back to the car."
All of the members stared at Namjoon, but nobody protested. It really was all they could do. There was no service to call for help way out there. They'd worry about their stuff later. The leader scooped Jungkook up into arms and lifted him in the air. He felt terrible hearing the maknae scream and cry out in pain. It broke his, and everyone else's, heart. He knew he had to do this in order to help. Thankfully, Taehyung kept his word and had marked all the trees with his knife, so they were able to trail their way back. Everyone went ahead of Namjoon so they could clear the branches and things out of his way as he carried their maknae. Once they made it back to the actual campsite, they continued and Taehyung found the trail markers once more, even in the dark, to get them back to the car.
Namjoon felt Jungkook's body go limp in his arms. The boy had become increasingly cold the longer they had walked. They all panicked more now that Jungkook had passed out. He wasn't breathing well and he was losing a lot of blood. Jungkook's blood was dripping all over Namjoon. The leader was caked in it.
They finally had service and called for help. The members all sat there and cried while waiting for an ambulance to show up. Rubbing Jungkook's arms, his head, anything to try and keep him warm. Namjoon kept the maknae curled up against him in order to offer as much body heat as he could.
"Please be okay," Yoongi whispered into Jungkook's ear.
When the ambulance got there, the members barely had time to explain what happened before the youngest was, what felt like stolen, away from them. Jin hopped in the drivers seat of the car and they sped in behind the ambulance.
They weren't allowed to see Jungkook right away. He had to be taken into surgery immediately. A doctor informed them that he did have a few broken ribs and one of his lungs had been punctured. He'd also lost a lot of blood.
Hobi and Taehyung both dropped to their knees hugging and crying together. "Our poor maknae!" Taehyung cried into Hobi's chest. None of them understood how something this terrible had happened so quickly. Jungkook had gone to bed with everyone. They wanted to know what the hell that boy was doing in the woods in the middle of the night to begin with, especially after being told not to venture off. Jin and Yoongi couldn't be mad though. At least not right now. They were way too worried and heartbroken.
"Is he going to be okay?" Jimin asked as he wiped his own tears away.
"We will have to see." That was the only response the doctor gave before departing the waiting room.
The members sat around, sulking.
"I don't understand what the hell he would have been doing." Jimin was staring at the ceiling, not particularly talking to anyone.
However, Jimin's statement caught Namjoon's attention. The leader then turned to Jin and Yoongi. "I know it's not my place to tell you two what to do. But...please don't be angry with him when we see him. Okay? I know you told them all not to go anywhere, but..please...hyungs...don't be angry. You're not the ones sitting here drenched in his blood." Namjoon looked down at his clothes. Dried and caked with all the blood Jungkook had lost. He felt as if he'd stolen it from him. He wished there was a way he could offer it back.
Yoongi and Jin turned to each other and didn't even have to exchange thoughts.
"Believe it or not, we weren't planning to. I'm sure he had his reasons. I just want him to be okay," Jin replied. All he wanted to do was hug Jungkook in his arms and kiss his head and offer comfort. Not being able to do that right now was the most troubling thing for him.
Yoongi said he was going to the bathroom, but he was actually going out to ask a nurse if they had extra clothes somewhere so Namjoon could change. He knew how much it was killing his leader having to sit there in the soiled clothes, and truthfully, none of them wanted to see the blood anymore.
Yoongi walked back in with some sweatpants and a hoodie and offered it to his leader. Namjoon ran to the bathroom, ecstatic to finally change. When he got back to the others, they were being given a positive update.
Jungkook was out of surgery and it went well. It would take a while for his ribs to heal up but they were able to fix them and they repaired his lung. "He's going to have to use some breathing treatments for a few months to help get his oxygen levels back to normal while the lung heals, but he'll get there. His blood level has also stabilized."
"So are you saying he's going to be okay?" Hobi asked with hopeful eyes.
The doctor smiled. "Yes, he's going to be alright. You guys saved him in time. If he had been outside any longer he would have stopped breathing and bled to death at the same time."
The members really didn't want to hear that, but they were thankful that wasn't the outcome. Yoongi turned to Jimin and Taehyung and grabbed both of them, pulling them into his chest. He started crying. "Thank God you two heard him scream. If you guys hadn't...if you hadn't have heard him...we wouldn't have..we wouldn't.." The rapper broke down before finishing his statement. We wouldn't have our maknae anymore.
All of them came together to hug and squished Taehyung and Jimin between them. Thanking them a million times over. They both said they didn't know why it woke them up so easily, it just had.
They had to wait a few more days before being able to see Jungkook. In the meantime they had actually called the camping company to retrieve their stuff for them. They told the camp owner what happened and he was more than willing to help out. He also offered to help pay for Jungkook's medical expenses but they politely declined. They appreciated the gesture but they could handle it.
When they were finally told their maknae could have visitors, they sprinted to him. He was laying there all wrapped and wired up, a heart breaking sight, but it beat the other outcome this could have had.
"My baby!" Jin screamed as he ran to Jungkook's bedside.
Jungkook smiled, glad to finally see his hyungs. He'd been in and out of consciousness wondering where they were. He also was subtly scared of a scolding from Jin and Yoongi for having ventured off into the woods after being told not to. He hoped they would understand why he'd done it and not be too angry.
"H..hi hyungs.." he whispered. It still hurt his ribs and stomach to talk, so he kept things brief and quiet.
The hyungs smothered him with gentle hugs and light pecks all over his face. He had bruises and scratches on his cheeks too. Hobi caressed one of them with the back of his hand. "Oh, our poor kid."
Jungkook couldn't help it. He was feeling emotional from all the meds and everything that had happened, and he completely burst into tears. He was overwhelmed and finally seeing his hyungs again after all of this had really gotten to him. He covered his face with his hands as he cried. "I'm so sorry."
"What? Sorry? Why are you apologizing?" Jimin asked.
Jungkook looked to Jin and Yoongi. "I'm so sorry, hyungs. Please don't be too angry with me."
Yoongi and Jin both started crying as they both hugged him. "Nobody is angry." Jin kissed the top of Jungkook's head. "Okay? Hyungs aren't angry. No way. We're just glad you're going to be okay. Never scare the hell out of your hyungs like that again!"
Taehyung couldn't stand the suspense anymore. "I've been dying to know what the hell happened. How'd you end up out there? What were you doing out there in the middle of the night?"
It took a while for Jungkook to explain himself because he kept having to catch his breath. Once he had informed them what he was doing and why, everyone felt even worse.
"You were doing all that for us?" Jimin frowned.
"Of course." Jungkook played with the hem of the blanket that was covering him. Still nervous and hoping that nobody would be angry with him.
"Oh, maknae." Jin wrapped his arm around Jungkook's shoulders. "You sure know how to make our hearts hurt!" The oldest smiled and laughed, trying to ease some of Jungkook's pain. The maknae smiled to see that no matter what happened, Jin really cared. He was glad that they all did. They told him they were grateful he was thinking of them and that's he'd gone into the woods, but to be more mindful of dangers like that.
--
A few weeks had gone by and Jungkook was finally released from the hospital, but he had to remain on bed rest for a while until his ribs and lungs got a little better. The hyungs spoiled their maknae day in and day out. Every day they told him how lucky they all were over and over. Jungkook had already thanked Jimin and Taehyung a million and a half times too, knowing if it weren't for them hearing him he'd have been dead before dawn.
He'd heal up just fine, and he also promised himself to listen better and seek out his hyungs more often when he felt the need to help them somehow.
'Cause if I do end up dead, I think hyungs would actually be pretty mad about that. He laughed to himself. And I already make Jin hyungs life pretty hard.
