When you first met Lena, you knew that you would likely come second to her work, however you never quite realised how true that would be. She spent all of her time in her office, lab or just doing work from home and sometimes it would be weeks between when you would see her. You understood how important work was to her and you knew what she did was rather important but that didn't mean it didn't hurt when you always came second to her career.

After months of it being stuck on your mind and building up the courage to talk to her about it, you had sat her down when you had a moment with her. You told her about how it hurt you to never see her, and that you understood how much her work meant to her; you explained everything to her through tears that were fighting to fall. She sat in silence until your words seized.

"I love you so much Y/N," she assured you, holding onto your hands. "But my work is very important to me too. I'm sorry that I made you feel unloved, but my career and my love are equally as important to me."

You nodded your head, understanding that fact but it didn't help all the previous heartache that you had felt.

"I understand that you need to work and how much you love it but sometimes, I think I'm going to fall, and you won't be able to catch me," you whispered. "I don't want to spend weeks without seeing you, not knowing when I can even get a phone call with you. I knew that I would be okay with you working long hours and not being home often, but I don't know how to cope without you with me at all."

Lena offered you a gentle smile, realising how important time with her was for you. It was something that she hadn't thought about before and never really considered everything in such a state before.

"I'm sorry for putting you in that position, I never really thought of it as abandoning you but I understand that is how it would feel for you," she said softly. "I promise that I will put more time into our relationship and whenever you need me, you can actually get a hold of me without an issue. I am happy to put the work in to make sure that you feel how loved as you actually are."

You couldn't help the tears that brimmed in your eyes. "That's all I want."
