This was one of my fav oneshots to write, hope you guys like it! :) <3
Starfire's eyes fluttered open, her emerald eyes catching the red glare of the clock beside the bed, 2:00 am. She turned over, moaning, the sheets rustling above her. Her husband, Dick Grayson, was sound asleep. Starfire smiled gently and deciding that she would not go back to sleep for a while, she propped herself up with her arm, leaning her body back against her headboard. Lately, for some unknown reason, she had been getting up early in the morning, and she couldn't go back to sleep. It had been affecting her performance in crime fighting, her mood, and her energy. For some reason, she had been having sharp pains in her stomach area and her back had been sore, causing her to wake up around 2:00 in the morning for about a week now.
She moved her hand to the small of her back, pressing her palm flat against it. Starfire's hand began to heat up, almost as if she was going to form a starbolt, but she held it back, allowing the warmth to spread through her skin. The ache began to fade, the heat soothing her tight muscles. But just as quick as she started, she pulled her hand away, knowing that if she left it on her skin too long it could easily burn her. Though the pain in her back was subsiding, the agony in her stomach increased, its cutting shoots of pain randomly jabbing her in different abdominal areas. Her throat let out a sigh as she let her head bang slightly against the headboard behind her, closing her eyes. A stirring next to her caught her attention, and she reopened her eyes to see Dick Grayson moving under the covers. His eyes opened, their blinding blue piercing the darkness around them.
"Hey princess, what are you doing up?' He asked her, rising up to meet her position on the headboard.
"Richard, I told you that you do not have to call me that." Starfire playfully teased his endearing name towards her.
"I know, but you are mine, so I feel it is only right to address you as so, your highness." Starfire smacked him gently, as he wrapped her in a hug, letting her place her head in the crook of his neck, gazing out into the blackness of the room. She sighed as she felt safe, home, in Dick's arms. Dick pressed his face into her hair, finding her ear.
"Are you going to tell me what is wrong, Star?" He asked her.
"Well," She began, moving to fit more comfortably. "I have been doing the thinking."
"Yeah?" Dick pressed.
"I do not want him to worry..."
"Have you ever thought about children?" She asked abruptly, the first thing coming to her mind for some reason. Dick looked shocked, as he was taken aback.
"We aren't hav-"
"No, no."
He exhaled, relieved. Then his voice became serious, "Star, you know we can't-"
"I know, I know. I just thought... it is nice to do the thinking about." She decided and Dick put his chin on top of her head.
"Well, what are you thinking?" He inquired softly.
"How you would be the great father for the starters..."
Dick chuckled softly. "That would be nice."
"I think so too." Starfire shifted slightly as she laid her hand on her husband's chest, snuggling closer.
"What would you name them?" She asked.
"Hmm?"
"I mean, if we had the children, what would you name them?"
"Um..." Dick moved an arm, unconsciously scratching his disheveled black hair. "Well, for a girl, I really like the name Astra."
"I like Mary."
Dick stiffened at that name, and Starfire pulled away quickly.
"I am sorry, I just thought- to honor your mother- that was the dumb, I should not-"
"No," Dick soothed, pulling her back into him, petting her thick locks. "No, I was just... surprised, that's all. But I do like name. Maybe you could put a Tamaranian spin on it, with spelling and pronunciation."
"What? Like M-A-R-' I?" Starfire laughed.
"Yeah, that sounds beautiful."
A comfortable silence fell between them. After a few minutes, Dick spoke up.
"What about a boy?"
"A boy?"
"Yeah."
Starfire bit her lip in thought, "Well, I do like the name John, you know, your dad."
Dick nodded, thinking about how his dad himself would feel about another person named after him.
"What about your brother's name, what was it again?" Starfire's green eyes that lit the darkness dimmed.
"Ryand'r." She said with longing. "His name was Ryand'r."
"I like it." Starfire turned her head in shock.
"You do?"
"Yeah, it's unique... and it honors someone. Which seems to be the pattern of our ideas." Dick told her with a laugh and she giggled along with him. After a moment of fleeting laughter, she sighed.
"I wish that, this could be real, that we could..." Starfire trailed off and burrowed herself deeper in Dick's embrace.
"I know, Star, I do too." He kissed the top of her head, then pulled her back, looking her straight in the eyes.
"But I believe that miracles can happen. No matter what happens, I will always love you." Starfire smiled, her eyes watering. She leaned in, kissing him.
"I love you, too."
"And maybe one day, one day, we'll be parents."
And in that moment, Starfire's stomach pain ceased.
