xv. snow days and lost toys
One day, Mommy and Daddy didn't wake me up for school. When I got up, it was 8:30 and I was scared. What if I was late for school? I got out of bed and Daddy had already made me hot cocoa and pancakes. "It's a snow day," he said. "School's canceled."
"School's canceled?!?" I said. I had never heard of school being canceled because of snow before. Then again, it didn't snow much last year. I looked out the window and there was frost all over it. I rubbed my hand over it and some of it came off so I could see. There was snow all over our backyard. "Daddy, can we play outside?" I asked.
"Sure," Daddy said.
"Yay!" I ran to get my coat, hat, and gloves. I wanted to buy a purple coat, but Mommy wouldn't let me. "Noah has to have it when you outgrow it," she told me. "I'm sure he won't want to wear a purple coat." I asked Mommy why, and she told me that purple was a girly color. I didn't really get that either, but Mommy said to stop asking questions. So I was stuck with an ugly brown coat.
I put on my ugly brown coat and grabbed Bronto. Noah put on his coat and we both went into the backyard. I picked up some snow and made a snowball. Then, I threw it at Noah.
"Hey!" he shouted. "That was mean!" He took some snow and threw it at me. I brushed the snow off of my coat and started taking big chunks of ice to build a fort. That would protect me from the Evil Noah Monster. I took Bronto and put him on top of the half-built fort. He would protect me in the meantime.
"Hey McKenna!" I heard someone shout. I looked in that direction and it was Aaron. He had a great big snowball ready to throw at someone. I ducked, but he threw it at Noah. Then he ran behind my fort. Noah kept throwing snowballs, but they all hit the fort. "Cool fort," Aaron said.
"Thanks," I said.
"I have a really, really good knock knock joke," Aaron said.
"What?" I asked.
"Knock knock," Aaron said.
"Who's there?"
"Grr."
"Grr who?"
"Are you a polar bear or an owl?"
I laughed. "Good one Aaron." It really wasn't that funny, but I'd never get Aaron to stop telling me knock knock jokes. Aaron made a few snowballs and tossed them over the fort at Noah. I did the same. Then I looked over the fort. Bronto wasn't there.
"Where's Bronto?" I shouted. I jumped over the fort and started digging through the snow. Noah kept throwing snowballs, but I kept looking. I needed to have Bronto.
"What does Bronto look like?" Aaron asked.
"Remember the dinosaur in Mrs. Stumph's room last year?" I asked.
"Yeah?"
"Just like that."
"Is this it?" Aaron asked. He pulled Bronto up from under the snow. Bronto was dirty, wet, and covered in snow, but I was glad he was alright.
"Yes! Thank you Aaron," I said.
"You're welcome."
"Are you okay, Bronto?" Bronto nodded. "Maybe we should go inside."
"Okay. See you later McKenna," Aaron said. He waved and left. Noah and I went inside.
"Wow, looks like you two had fun out there," Daddy said.
"We sure did," I said.
"Yeah! It was fun!" Noah said.
"That's wonderful," Daddy said. "Now how about some hot chocolate?"
Daddy gave us both hot chocolate. I smiled and wished that we could have snow days more often, because this was really fun.
