fourteen

The eye-blinding screens around Davina's slumped form started to blur as her eyelids drooped gradually. She glanced over to her left to see Steve's head resting on the desk, soft snoring sounds escaping his exhausted body.

Well at least one of us is getting some sleep.

Steve and Davina hadn't left their office in 57 hours, she was running on 3 hours of sleep, 6 bathroom runs and 19 cups of coffee. Steve wasn't doing much better either.

Davina felt like she was studying for her exams again, like when your in the working mindset and can't bring yourself to stop.

She squinted her eyes and smacked the back of her healing hand against her cheek, desperate to keep herself from sleep.

Ever since she had started working to help Bucky, the girl had refused sleep. If she slept, it seemed like she was failing him, like she was giving up on helping Barnes. Well, that's what she told herself anyways.

She sipped at a cup of luke warm coffee as her eyes scanned over Bucky's brain pattern graphs, laid out across the screen before her drained eyes.

The most frustrating thing was that they looked... Normal? Everything about the soldiers brain looked the same as an average persons brain.

She let a deep sigh escape her lips and her eyes found the digital clock in the corner of the sceen.

10.27pm

Davina's mind pondered slightly, it wasn't too late.. Maybe Bucky's still awake.

She forced her frazzled legs up from the chair and put her coffee down on the table before she sauntered out of the room.

Bucky wasn't far away, Steve and Davina had taken over a room close by so they wouldn't have to travel far to get to him.

Davina stopped by a small hospital wing and grabbed some supplies for her research. The girl wasn't really aware of what she was doing, but she just needed something to go off, something to kick start her research.

She ignored the complaints from the few nurses as she gathered supplies to extract a portion of blood. If his brain didn't show anything unusual, perhaps his blood might.

Davina's clothes clung to her withered frame as she walked towards Bucky's cell. Wanda had given her a change of clothes once she found out the girl was going to be here for a while. Wanda Maximoff's loose black jeans and tight fitting long sleeved white shirt now occupied her body. Davina was thankful for the clothes, anything better than the grey tracksuit she had been made to wear before was a win.

Davina's feet made little sound as she walked down the brightly lit empty hallway. She had abandoned her shoes by the 10th hour of research, now the only thing covering her feet was a pair of pink socks. She had laughed when Wanda handed them to her along with a pair of black boots. The Maximoff girl had said that as long as she wore happy socks, she wouldn't loose her spirit.

God I love that girl.

Davina slowed as she entered the observation room connected to Bucky's cell. She had tried not to call it a cell, Steve referred to it as a room... It was a cell, there was no denying that.

She reached the window and Bucky's head snapped up, his expression settling once he saw it was her.

"Hello Barnes." She yawned. "Mind if I come inside?" Davina wasn't supposed to enter the cell, especially not alone. But the only security footage of Bucky went to their office, and she didn't think Steve would mind.

Bucky raised an eyebrow in response. "Won't you get in trouble?"

"Ah what are they going to do? Through me in a cell? Been there, done that, don't really care." She smirked.

"Please, come inside, i'll put the kettle on."

Davina's smirk grew as she unlocked the door and stepped into the room. She closed the door behind her and walked slowly towards the man before sitting herself against the wall opposite him.

"To what do I owe the pleasure Ms. Penton." He smiled slightly.

Davina glared and rolled her eyes. "Just doing a checkup Mr. Barnes."

Now was Bucky's turn to roll his eyes. "Couldn't have visited me sooner? It's been weeks."

"It hasn't even been 3 days, Jesus when did you become such a drama queen Buck?"

"Since I haven't been able to see my fourth favourite person." Bucky grinned.

"Fourth?! Well excuse me Mr Barnes! I'm afraid you've just lost out first name basis allowance." Davina gasped.

"Well you could maybe argue for third, any higher than that would be a bit of a stretch." His grin only grew the more he spoke. Bucky's eyes softened as he opened his mouth to speak again. "I remember my sister Vina..." His voice was soft.

Davina eyes glistened with happiness. She brought out the small notebook she always kept in her pocket and rested against her thigh. "Can you tell me about her Buck?" She spoke softly, awaiting his words.

Bucky opened and closed his mouth a few times. "Her name was Rebecca, but I called her Becca."

Davina wrote Bucky's words quickly, her eyes darting between her notes and Bucky's changing expression as he spoke.

"She- She looked like me.. I think, her hair was like mine, brown... but longer. A-and she had pretty eyes, they were blue." His voice stuttered slightly.

Bucky rested his head against the wall behind him and closed his eyes.

Davina waited a few minutes after Bucky stopped talking before she spoke. "Do you remember anyone else Bucky? You mother-"

She was cut off by Bucky speaking again, his voice was louder now, he seemed more certain of his own thoughts. "I remember Peggy."

Davina couldn't help but gasp slightly, she had heard about Peggy, Steve had mentioned her a couple times when the pair were discussing Bucky's past.

"Who was Peggy Bucky?" Davina pressed slightly, trying to get as much information out of the man without pushing too hard.

"Steve loved Peggy." He smiled slightly at the words that rolled out of his mouth. "Peggy loved Steve too... I'm sure of it." He paused slightly between words, straining his mind to remember as much as possible. "I didn't know Peggy that well, I saw her a few times, she was always looking at Steve... Steve was always looking at her."

A wave of stillness seemed to rush over Bucky. "That's all I remember, I'm sorry Davina." His eyes lowered towards his lap and towards his gloved hand.

Davina had told him that it was okay to take off the glove, she had told him not to worry about anyone seeing his arm. Bucky had refused instantly. Davina hadn't seen his arm yet, he didn't want the way she looked at him to change, he didn't want her to look at him like he was some kind of monster.

Davina cleared her throat. "Thank you Bucky, that's really good. Your memories should start coming back in little snippets, whenever you remember anything at all, I want you to write it down here. She handed him a pencil and a notebook, like the one she was writing in.

He hesitated before reaching out with his right arm and taking the notebook and nodded slightly in thanks.

The two sat in silence for a little while before Davina cleared her throat again. "Um Buck, I actually came down here to collect some blood."

His head shot up at her comment, Davina swallowed, his eyes seemed to burn holes through her skull.

"What?"

She held up a bag containing a needle, disinfectant, and cotton pads. "I need some blood."

Bucky rolled his eyes. "Do you even know how to take blood? I mean, no offence Vina, but you seem like the kind of person to accidentally eat a pile of dirt instead of chocolate cake... Or suck out my kidney's instead of blood with that needle."

Davina sneered as she stood up and sat down next to him. "Mhm, very funny, roll up your sleeve asshole."

Bucky rolled up his right sleeve and held it out to Davina. She added disinfectant to a cotton pad and grabbed his arm to rest it on her lap.

Bucky saw her visibly hesitate as she hovered the cotton pad above his arm. He rolled his eyes and scoffed before pointing to a spot on his arm with his left hand. "You take blood from here dumbass."

She sneered again and roughly wiped the cotton pad on the spot Bucky had pointed to. "I knew that, I was just.. Testing you.. To see if, you knew that?" She stammered and Bucky laughed.

"Uh huh, yeah that's totally what just happened doll."

Davina felt her cheeks go warm at the nickname, she lowered her head slightly to hide the pink colour forming on her cheeks as she pretended to be focused of disinfecting his arm.

Bucky's head lowered as well and he moved his right arm from her lap and used his hand to pull her chin up, exposing her face.

His eyes widened slightly and a smirk danced against his lips. "Did I make you blush?"

Geez this guy has no filter.

Davina didn't say anything, instead attempted to pull her face away from his hand, he didn't let her. Instead, he asked the same question "Did I make Davina Penton blush?" His smirk grew wildly.

"No." Her voice wavered. "It's just, really hot in here." Her voice, unfortunately was extremely unconvincing.

Bucky's smirk somehow grew even more and he let go of her face. "Your adorable, you know that?" His smile softened as he spoke.

Davina didn't say anything, her cheeks only became redder at his words and she looked down again to prepare the needle.

Bucky grinned and his lips separated slightly. "I made you blush again-"

His words were cut off as Davina stabbed the needle's point into his arm with no mercy.

"Jesus you suck." Bucky winced.

"Thank you.. Doll." She grinned and removed the needle.

Bucky rolled his eyes and scoffed as she placed a bob the builder sticker over the small dot of blood on his arm.

"Seriously? What the hell is that Vina?" His icy blue eyes stared straight into her own eyes.

She grinned once again. "It's Bob the Builder dumbass." She laughed.

Her laughter turned into a gasp of outrage and shock at the confusion plastered across his face. She smacked his chest with her palm, receiving a sound of anger erupting from Bucky.

"OW! Stabbing me not enough for you Davina?!"

"You haven't watched Bob The Builder!?" She yelled in his face.

"Your a psychopath, what the hell is Bob The Builder?"

Davina smacked him again against his chest, harder this time.

"Vina!"

"We're watching Bob The Builder." She crossed her arms and stared him straight in the face, determination written all over her expression.

"What? Okay great?" He questioned, squinting his eyes.

Davina turned her attention back towards the blood filled needle. She took it into her hands and filled a small vial with the blood.

Bucky's voice became more serious as he watched her. "What are you going to do with that?" He questioned.

Davina yawned, much to Bucky's amusement. "You brain scans didn't show anything unusual, I was hoping I might find something off about your blood."

Bucky furrowed his brows in question.

"No! I mean- Shit, I didn't mean I was hoping something would be wrong with you blood- Jesus."

Bucky cut her off by putting his flesh hand again her cheek, forcing her to face him.

Davina tried to fight the heat rising against her cheeks.

"i know what you meant Vina." His expression changed to a smirk at the sight of her cheeks. "Davina Penton." He grinned wickedly. "Am I making you blush again?"

Davina scoffed and pushed his hand from her cheek whilst rising from the floor.

Bucky grabbed her bag and rose as well.

He handed her the bag and grabbed her wrist. Davina looked up at his in shock, awaiting an explanation.

"Thank you Davina." He whispered, his thumb stroking the palm of her hand softly.

The girl smiled and wrapped her arms around his waist for the second time since they met. This time, Bucky didn't waste any time before wrapping his arms around her shoulder and smiling into her hair.

Davina pulled away, much too soon for Bucky's liking.

"I have to go back to Steve, he fell asleep at his desk and might get worried if he wakes up and i'm not there." Davina explained.

She turned around and started to walk to the door before she stopped at Bucky's words. "Vina.. Sleep, you need it."

She paused slightly and nodded, her back still facing him.

"Goodnight Bucky." She spoke softly as the door closed behind her and automatically locked.

Davina's smile remained on her face as she walked down the empty corridors, her heart fluttering quickly against her chest.
