dazed (conscious)
"Hyojun-ah?"
"Please, wake up."
"I miss you so much."
"Please..."
"Nobody else thinks you'll wake up but me."
I slowly open my eyes, groaning as sunlight overflows my vision. I cover my eyes in attempt to escape the blinding light.
"Hyojun? Hyojun!"
I look between my fingers at the lady beside my bed. She looks somewhat familiar, but I can't remember why. She has messy brown hair and obviously hasn't gotten much sleep.
"You're finally awake. I've been waiting for so long."
I sit up, wincing at the pain in my head. "I'm sorry but... who are you? Where's Minji?"
Her smile quickly fades. "I'm your mom. And I don't know any Minji. Who is she?"
I look her up and down. She doesn't look like the mom I remember. My mom always has a comforting smile on her face. My mom looks slightly younger, and much more put together. In fact, the more stressed she was, the more she would make herself look presentable.
"If I'm a mess on the inside, why be a mess on the outside as well?" she would say.
This woman is not the mother I remember.
"Minji. My twin sister."
She seems to grow even more upset at this. "You don't have a sister. You have a brother, but that's it."
A doctor comes in. "Ah, you're awake?"
They run a few tests on me. Apparently, I'm experiencing amnesia, and all my memories were replaced by my "dream".
I don't really feel like bringing up how that felt far too real to be a dream.
•••
This lady is strange. She gets upset far too easily. Whenever I mention anybody from my "dream", she pouts and scolds me. Apparently, I have to only focus on my actual life, so that I can remember her.
I don't really like her. I miss the woman I consider my mom.
I think the lady has a grudge against her husband. She still wears her ring, but she always seems to fight with her husband over the phone. I definitely don't like her.
•••
I have a brother as well. He is supposed to come see me tomorrow.
The lady decided to tell me about her husband finally. Apparently, they just have "lovers quarrels" more frequently than the average couple.
I was only in my coma for 4 months. Apparently, I was in a car accident. Things were bad. I was drifting in and out of life frequently. Right at the end of the second month, I actually had died, but they used those things that they electrocute your heart with. I guess that's about when I had "time traveled" back.
The lady is scary. She makes me want to go back to my coma. Even if I had died twice there, it was better than it is here. She's obviously not cut out to be a mom. Ah, that's probably rude to say, isn't it.
I haven't said a word in three days. Not since she told me to stop talking about my dream.
It wasn't just a dream. I'm sure of it.
•••
Today I met my brother. He's nobody familiar. Obviously hates my guts, which tells me that these people really are my family, and the lady wasn't just making it up. But why would he hate me? What did I do to him?
I don't like my family one bit.
Tomorrow I'll get discharged. Then I'll run away. I can't stay with them, definitely not.
•••
I'm free.
I ran away from them. I guess now I'm on the run.
There. Someone catches my eye. It's only for a brief second, but it's enough to make me follow them through the crowd. He goes into an alley. I crouch down, watching them.
"He's back."
"He just doesn't know how to die, does he?"
"What, do you want him to die, Jay?"
"Of course not, Sunoo. How could I ever wish death upon our little protagonist?"
Jake sighs, leaning on Sunghoon. A cigarette sits in between their interlocked fingers. Complete opposites, connected by a single forever unlit cigarette. That was always their relationship when I saw them before. Even now, when I'm out of my coma.
Heeseung twists his ring around his finger. The one I gave him. "Have the others been located yet?"
Niki shakes his head. "I believe that they should all be close together. I think Junseo and Nabi have Kangmin captive, and I might know where Minji is."
Heeseung nods. "And... Jungwon?"
"Still no clue. He's the hardest of all to find. I just hope that we can find him soon."
Sunoo takes a sip of his drink. A margarita, of course. "And where's Hyojun?"
"Behind me. Eavesdropping on us. I didn't think it would be this easy to find him."
I come out, since my cover is blown. "The lady who claims to be my mother is weird. I don't like her or my brother, so I ran away. Saw Niki, and here I am."
Heeseung stares into my eyes. It's easy to get lost in his. I wonder if he finds it easy to get lost in mine. "Well then, do you want in on the plan? We're not gonna lose this time. We can't afford to."
I look at them all. Because of them, I've died twice. Been through love, heartbreak, pain, happiness, and so much more.
If I turned it down, I could go back to my "real" life. Ignore this dream and come back to reality.
"I'm in. What's the plan?"
"Well, let's just say that it involves a few margaritas and a big chance of a third death. And this one isn't one we come back from."
