Dawnstripe's Path
Darkness. Blackness. The absence of light. Nothing. But she knew there had to be something. Something out there. She could feel the ground beneath her. She felt her mother's warmth beside her. Yet she saw nothing. Without her eyes open, she had no idea what anything looked like. Her mother, her brother, her father, her whole "clan", as she heard her mother say. She didn't know what a clan was, but she guessed that it was where she lived. At least her ears were open and she could hear. There were so many things to hear. The faint breeze rustling outside. The soft loving meow of her mother as she tells the small kit to stay close and rest. The sound of other cats walking around. She started to wander away from the nest she lay in, feeling the different textures beneath her tiny paws, but before she could get very far the sound of another cat walking in made her stop where she stood.
"Hello Greywhisker," She heard her mother say. "Hello Crystalheart." Crystalheart? Was that her mother's name? It was, and it was beautiful.
"Look at you, Greywhisker. You look as if you're going to pop if you don't have your kits soon."
"Yes, I know. But they'll come when they're ready. Has Dawnkit opened her eyes yet?" Dawnkit? That was her name! She loved it even more than she loved her mother's. "She'll have to open them sooner or later."
Another cat walked in. Smaller, Dawnkit sensed, than Greywhisker. "Mom! When can I play with Dawnkit!" Her brother? It had to be.
"Icekit, you can play with her when she opens her eyes. Until then, why not play with Spottedkit?" Crystalheart said with the loving tone she always had in her voice.
"But she's five moons older than me and she never plays fair!" There was a nagging tone in his voice.
"When your sister is ready, you can play but not now. Now go outside and play." Her voice was a bit more stern. There was an edge to it. But her mother was right, she would open when she was ready. But that wasn't now, and as she felt the tug of sleep try to pull her away, she squeeked a loud meow of protest. But eventually she could not resist falling into a warm deep slumber.
