Dawn believed Rachel now. She gaped at her like the rest of the camp as she came around. Finding herself sitting on the stool, she sighed.
'Another prophecy, huh?'
'Yeah, but this time it wasn't a Great Prophecy. It was a quest prophecy,' Percy said.
'What did I say?' Rachel asked.
'Well, it was like this..' He recited the prophecy she had just said.
Rachel looked at the campers, who were all looking shellshocked.
'You know what this means,'she said calmly. 'You know the hero in the prophecy. It's all there....the search, the fifth since the curse, the hero sought after since war.'
Pandemonium broke out. The flames in the campfire shot up as everyone began to shout and argue and cheer, most at the same time.
Annabeth stood up. The campers shut up as they looked at her.
'Yes, we do know,' she said to Rachel. 'But do you know which girl from the Apollo cabin-sunlight's daughter-it will be?'
Rachel shook her head.
'No, but something tells me it will be someone who hasn't been at camp very long. Someone new.'
The campers all looked at the new demigods there. Dawn found herself being studied hopefully too.
'She looks nothing like an Apollo camper!' Someone said, and they all nodded, moving their sights to another undetermined girl in front of her.
Dawn looked at the Apollo cabin. It was true, they were all blonde, most of them with light-colored eyes too-blue or gray. She had dark hair and dark eyes. These couldn't be her brothers or sisters. She glanced at the Aphrodite cabin and shuddered. They were all gorgeous but she didn't want to spend most of her time looking in mirrors, re-applying lipstick and flirting.
There was a girl in the front though, who looked a lot better than the rest. She was no less beautiful than her sisters but she wasn't checking her make-up and was actually paying attention to what was going on. She had dark hair, like her, but it was cut choppy and uneven, giving her a bold sort of look. She wore a denim jacket and a respectably worn pair of jeans. Her eyes, which were constantly shifting color, were sparkling like Annabeth's did. Dawn decided she wouldn't mind being in the Aphrodite cabin if she could be like her.
'Who's that?' She asked Travis but he was too busy arguing with Connor and someone from the Demeter cabin about whether the new girl in the Apollo cabin was 'the one' or not to answer her. She caught the words 'Leo', 'Giant War' and 'find him' but they made no sense to her so she got up and left the campfire. She was tired after her first day and she didn't see what she would get out of sitting there while people examined her and argued about something she didn't understand.
'Could you guys at least explain to me who you're talking about?' Dawn asked, frustrated.
Her cabin didn't appear to hear her but continued to argue amongst themselves about whatever they were talking about last night. All through the night, before breakfast and now at breakfast they had been talking about some Leo and how he had to be found.
Finally Dawn lost it.
'WILL YOU JUST SHUT UP FOR A SECOND?' She shouted. Half the people in the mess hall turned to look at her but she didn't care. 'AND TELL ME WHAT'S GOING ON?'
Her cabin stared at her.
'Wow...' Connor shook his head.'You can be pretty fierce when you want to.'
When she made an exasperated sound, he hurriedly continued,'To answer your question, what's going on is that since the Giant War a month ago, we've been trying to find one of our campers. He disappeared in the middle of the war to finish off Gaea-Greek Mother Earth, turned evil, long story-but we think he might be alive since he had this potion which could bring a person back to life-'
'Okay, okay, what was his name?'
'Leo Valdez.'
Dawn choked on a sip of her coffee. Travis thumped her on the back and she sprayed it out all over him.
When everyone had finished laughing,Travis had mopped himself up and Dawn was done apologizing, they all asked what had happened.
'It's just-I-I know Leo Valdez. Or at least knew.'
Her cabin's jaws dropped open.
'But-how?'a girl spluttered. She was the new one the campers had turned to last night after ruling Dawn out.
'At my last orphanage-or the one before my last, whatever-I met Leo. He was practically my only friend. I still cried a lot about my mom's death but he'd get me to forget about that and crack up instead. He was like my brother. But he wasn't happy at the orphanage, I could tell. He got picked on a lot. He'd told me he'd run away from countless orphanages but I didn't think he would do that with me around. He did, though. He ran away one night and left me alone.'
'And you had no idea he was a demigod?'
'No idea at all! How could I know? Percy and Annabeth introduced me to demigods only days ago!'
Everyone looked sympathetic.
'But he'll be found soon, right? By 'sunlight's daughter', whoever the prophecy means. Then you'll get him back,' Travis said encouragingly.
'Yeah...' She finished eating in silence. Everyone else started talking again, although a few curious looks were directed her way. She was too busy thinking to notice, though. She HAD to find Leo. She didn't care about 'sunlight's daughter.' It was her job to get her friend back. And she was going to do it as soon as possible. Then a thought struck her.
'You all seem so sure it was Leo the prophecy was talking about,' she said suddenly. 'But how do you know it was? The search and the hero sought after since war..okay, but what about 'the fifth since the curse' and 'the one who conceals'?'
The Stolls and the girl who has asked how she knew Leo both frowned.
'You're right,' the girl admitted. 'We didn't pay a lot of attention to those lines. Better ask someone from the Athena cabin. They'll know.'
Dawn and the Stolls nodded.
'What's your name, by the way?' Dawn asked the girl.
'I'm Star Black,' the girl smiled at her.'And, yes, it's my real name.'
'No, no, it's cool,' Dawn said. 'I wish I had a name like that instead of just plain old Dawn McCarthy.'
Star smiled again. She had a dimple in her left cheek, hazel eyes flecked with gray and dark brown hair which stopped just above her shoulders. She was also kind of small, at least six inches shorter than Dawn was. But she could tell that this was not someone to mess with in battle, no matter how easygoing she seemed now.
She was right. In sword fighting, Star had no equal (except maybe Percy),new or not. That day, during practice, she actually disarmed an Ares girl, who gaped at her.
'How did you do that?'
Star shrugged. 'It wasn't easy but I'm good with a sword.'
'Too right you are,' the girl said, picking up her sword and looking her over with a newfound interest. 'Let's try it again.'
They continued fighting, unaware that everyone in the arena had forgotten practice and was watching them. Dawn could see beads of perspiration forming on Star's forehead. Then-the audience held their breath-Star's sword's point twisted and knocked the Ares girl's sword to the floor.
Everyone gasped but it wasn't just at the disarming. Something had appeared above Star's head. It was a glowing red-boar's head? Dawn blinked. Then she remembered to kneel. Everyone else knelt only a second after her.
The Ares girl stepped forward.
'Hail, Star Black,' she said, as Chiron wasn't there. 'Daughter of Ares, god of war, weapons, bloodlust and violence.'
Frankly, that seemed pretty disgusting to Dawn but the Ares girl was grinning like this was a great honor. Star seemed to agree with Dawn. She looked slightly sick but quickly covered up with a smile.
'Come on, I'll take you to the Ares cabin,' the girl said as the sign faded.
Dawn leaned back against the wall. She had only been here a few days and she had seen two people be claimed. She wondered if she was next. And, if so, who would her godly father be? Would she even like him?
Hazel interrupted her train of thoughts.
'Should we get on?'
'Huh?' She started. 'Oh, yeah...'
Dawn snuck into the stables, looking around cautiously in case anyone saw her. It was the day after Star had been claimed and she thought it was time to start putting her plan into action.
She walked over to Carrie's stall and slipped in. Carrie whinnied welcomingly and nuzzled her as Dawn fed her a sugar cube.
'I guess not all horses prefer donuts over sugar cubes,'a voice from nearby said. Dawn whipped around, her heart hammering but it was just Percy, closing Blackjack's stall door behind him.
'I guess not,' Dawn agreed because she didn't know what else to say.
Percy grinned. 'Carrie says her all-time favorite is chocolate-chip cookies. I couldn't agree more. But I doubt she liked hers blue.'
Dawn wasn't sure she'd heard right. 'Blue?!'
'I like blue food.' Percy didn't offer an explanation so Dawn nodded and changed the topic. 'So you can talk to all horses?'
'Yeah.'
Dawn was wishing she had that ability. It would come in useful in her plan. She suddenly wondered if she could trust Percy. He sure seemed a trustworthy guy. And if he was good enough for , well, he was good enough for her.
'Can you keep a secret?' She blurted out.
Percy looked surprised. 'Sure.'
'I mean, like, from everyone. Even Annabeth.'
Percy considered but his curiosity got the best of him.
'Okay.'
Dawn exhaled. Then she told him her bizarre plan.
