Chapter 9

Stingray shuddered at the cool water. Her skin felt amazing; not dry and itchy like it had been.
Whale chuckled. He let go of her hand and watched her swim around in glee, seeing her pale, dry scales now turn into a striking and almost neon blue. Some awful sand also released themselves from the cracks of her skin- there was a cloud of sand now floating to the bottom of the ocean floor that came from her body.
Feeling better? Whale flashed.
Yes, yes! Much better! The sand is all gone! My skin isn't itchy! I feel....good! Stingray signed with energy as she did a twirl in the water. Something a deep purple caught her eye.
     A fish!
Stingray darted after it, her wings flapping which gave her an extra boost in speed.
She snatched the fish in her talons, and could feel it squirming and thrashing.
   Daddy! I caught one! I caught a-
She was about to repeat the second sentence when the purple fish darted away, not taking one single look back at the scary dragons. Stingray frowned.
Darn...
Stingray looked a bit frustrated as she swam back to Whale. He smiled.
Listen, Stingray, there is kind of an art to catching small fish. Too much of a grip, and it will probably shoot out of your claws due to its skin being rather scaly. Too less of a grip, and it will simply get away. Now, watch me.
Whale got down low in the water, flattening his deep green wings with the ocean floor. He stood there until a small clownfish swam by.
He jumped up and caught it in his mouth; scrunching his face up when it started to squirm on his tongue. He bit down, and the squirming stopped slowly.
Stingray's stomach growled again. Whale blinked and remembered he was also kind of hungry. But he had eaten this morning. She had eaten weeks ago.
     Whale sighed.
Come to the beach, Stingray. I'm going to try and catch as many fish as I can for you and me.
Stingray's eyes sparkled. Daddy was the nicer one of the two, and she loved him.
Whale swam up to the surface and opened his mouth on the metal floor of her cage. The purple fish slid out and landed with a quiet splat.
He smiled at Stingray. She looked at him, then the fish. She stood there.
Whale tilted his head, "Um....Stingray, you can eat it when you want..." He said.
Stingray blinked. Ray would slap Stingray if she ate the food she caught.
No! Stop thinking of Ray! This is daddy! Not Ray!
Stingray looked up with awe at Whale.
     "R-really?" She asked.
Whale nodded and stepped off to the side.
Stingray bolted over to the fish as fast as she could and clamped her jaws over it as hard as she could, chewing it for 2 seconds before swallowing the fish abruptly. The hunger in her stomach desired more. She looked at Whale with a begging look.
Whale blinked and sighed, semi-wishing that Ray was here to summon a huge pile of fish so he wouldn't have to do anything. He decided to play dumb.
"What...?" He asked her.
Stingray just wagged her tail expectantly, hungry still. She slid in closer to him.
He sighed. There was no getting out of this one.
He nodded and she bounced up.
"Yay!" She cried. Whale sighed as he strode into the water, Stingray paddling behind him.
"Are we going to catch a yummy fish, daddy?" She asked him out of hunger and curiosity.
"Let's hope we even catch one fish." Whale said nervously, diving under to look at a rather breathtaking coral reef, with fish of assorted colors, crabs, sea urchins, anemones, and seaweed. It was like a feast in one.
     Let's dig in, Stingray!
