Chapter 21 - The Early Bird Learns New Tricks
Dawn's POV
- 3 Days Later -
Lucy and I were sitting at the table in the main training room munching on some bread we had quickly snatched from the Dining hall on our way down here.
We were doing good so far, showing up early for training like Max had said for the past few days. I didn't get why we couldn't just show up on time though, we were always here before Max.
"I've been thinking," Lucy said as she swallowed her last piece of bread. "And I'm starting to wonder why we have to be here earlier than Max," she said basically reading my mind.
I shrugged as I took a bite. "Beats me."
We were silent for a moment before I remembered to ask about Alyson.
"Hey, how's Xavier doing with Alyson?" I asked Lucy before taking another bite of bread. "Is she still...."
Lucy laughed before standing up to stretch her legs. "Oh yeah, she's still pissed off at him," She said before sitting back down in her chair.
The afternoon Kaiden took me up to his office, I did actually end up going back to the dorm before everyone fell asleep. It might've been the look on my face, but they avoided questioning me about it all together and just skipped to telling me about what had happened with Xavier.
Parked and Lucy told the the vivid story version of it, seeing as Xavier was in bed under the covers moping about it. They told me the entire thing in crazy detail.
Apparently Alyson actually found the jokes funny and started to get flirty with him, thinking he was hitting on her. Xavier kept telling really bad jokes, and when she wanted to talk about something else, she got mad at him because he had to keep telling the jokes. Long story short, she stalked off pissed off beyond belief cussing about how irritating he was.
Lucy frowned as she took her last bite of bread. "Poor Xavier has been moping around. Must have been too embarrassing for him or something." she said before chewing.
"OH MY GOD," I shouted as I jumped out of my chair.
I startled Lucy causing her to jump out of her chair as well. "What is it!?" she said slightly panicked.
Turning to her I shook my head realizing how blind we'd been."I think Xavier has a thing for Alyson too." I said excitedly.
Her eyes widened and her mouth dropped open. "Dawn you genius, I think you might be right about that!" Lucy looked around before sitting back down in her chair. "We definitely need to get to work on that."
I smiled with a laugh as I sat back down in my own chair. "He's going to think that we're psychic or something."
Lucy laughed at that and I finished off the rest of the bread I had in my hand, just as Max strolled into the room whistling with his hands in his pockets.
"Good morning you two, glad to see you here early." he said with a smirk.
Lucy and I just grunted in reply, not exactly happy about it at all.
Max chuckled as he walked over and pulled some papers out of a drawer in the table that I hadn't noticed.
"I hope you ladies are ready for training today," Max said while examining the papers and then looking up at Lucy and me. "I'm sure you'll like it."
The last few days of training had been all speed related, so I assumed that we would be moving on to agility today. I mean, there was only eleven days until our next test.
"I might need you two to help me set up some things in the next couple days," Max said while glancing back up from his papers again. "Make sure you're here extra early."
Lucy and I groaned in annoyance and shared equally annoyed glances with each other.
Max rolled his eyes as he put the papers back into the drawer. "Don't sass me you two, I'm only kidding," He paused with his hands still in the drawer, "And get up off my chairs, I didn't say you could sit at my table."
Lucy and I both stood up rolling our eyes. "What are we doing today then?" I asked while crossing my arms.
Max was organizing the drawer, and I felt like he was trying to waste time.
"You'll see soon enough," was all he said in reply without even looking back up at us.
I was about to say something else because he was really getting on my nerves, but the loud voices of the other trainees were coming into the room from the stairwell, and I decided it was best to keep my mouth shut for now.
The first person to walk in was Xavier, he still looked kind of sad. I felt bad for not realizing he had feeling for Alyson before, but I was going to be sure to fix that with the help of Lucy.
Next came in the rest of the guys, including Parker, and then the other girls who were following a still pissed off Alyson in with confused looks on their faces.
Parker broke off from the other guys and started walking over to Lucy and I with a smile.
"Glad to see you all finally made it down here!" Max's voice loudly said as he finally shut the drawer he was messing with. "Now get in line and lets get started."
I frowned as Parker had to turn around and get in line, but I quickly followed, With Lucy right behind me, and I slipped into place next to him towards the middle of the line.
"Why are all the girls following around Alyson like they're confused?" I quietly whispered to Parker as Max began his morning speech.
Parker leaned towards me a little. "She won't tell them what's been wrong," he whispered back just as Max walked by us towards the other end of the line.
I slowly nodded at him. Typical Alyson. Prolonging her anger to gain attention. As much as I hated her, I'll still do the right thing and try and help out Xavier. Who knows? Maybe he could help turn her into less of a bitch....
"Alright then," Max breathed out while clapping his hands. "Time for agility training."
I heard some groans from down the line on both ends, but they were barely audible.
"You will be giver further directions once we get to the correct facility." Max instructed as he started walking to the door on the left side of the room. "Please follow me."
We all complied and followed Max through the doorway. He headed right down the hall instead of left this time though, and to my surprise we walked down a few steps before stopping directly in front of a massive door on the left.
Max waited until all of us had stopped moving before he nodded and pushed open the massive door.
I was momentarily blinded by a bright light, causing me to shield my eyes. I blindly followed as we all filed through the doorway. Once my vision cleared, I was in awe as I looked around.
We were in a huge courtyard that was bordered by buildings. The top was completely open, showing off the cloudless blue sky today. There was an enormous structure that stretched across the entire courtyard, and I could only assume it was an agility course.
"Whoa," I heard someone breath out behind me.
"That's crazy," I said to Lucy who was next to me.
She just nodded with wide eyes as we continued to follow Max closer to the structure.
"This," he said with a pause. "Is where we will be training the next few days." Max explained with a smirk as we stopped a few feet away from the structure. "This agility course is called Adroit, and to complete it takes great skill and focus."
"All of which you will learn in the next few days," said a female voice from somewhere above us.
We all glanced up to see who the voice belonged to. I smiled a little when I saw Karla sitting on the edge of one of the platforms above us with her feet hanging down.
She jumped down and landed in a crouching position before standing back up. "Good morning trainees." she said.
"Good morning ma'am," we all greeted back.
Karla walked over to Max and she gave him a slight nod before he turned back to us. "Karla will mostly be taking over the agility part of your training. I will be here to help, but from now on she is your trainer in command."
We all nodded as we waited for Karla to tell us what to do next.
She smiled as she crossed her arms. "Well first off, I don't like my trainees in blobs. Line up!" she called sternly.
Everyone scurried into a straight line facing her. I ended up next to Levi and Lucy.
"Now," Karla said as she started pacing up and down the line in the exact same way Max does. "Lets go over the rules."
She paused and looked us over before continuing. "First things first, from now on you are to meet here at 7:35 am for training," she paused and smiled. "Don't be late."
She turned around and started walking back down the line. "Second, the Adroit will be open for your use after training, but you still must be in your rooms by curfew. No exceptions."
She stopped walking when she was at the middle of the line, and turned to face us all. "Any questions so far?" she asked.
Nobody said anything, so Karla smiled and continued. "Good. Now last but not least, let us go over the Adroit its self."
Everyone started mumbling, but we were quickly shushed by Karla.
"There are four sections to the Adroit," she started to explain. "Within each part, there are two sub-parts I will go over once we start to practice them"
I was starting to get excited. I loved a challenge, and I could even use the Adroit in my free to make sure I was good and ready for our Exam. It wouldn't all be weighted on something that we didn't get the opportunity to practice.
"Each day we will practice one part, and on the very last day of agility training, you will have what you can call an exam." Karla continued to explain. "You will have to complete as much of the Adroit as fast as you can."
I started to wonder how hard the Adroit would be. I may be one of the fastest trainees, but that's not I'm one of the most agile of people.
"I will get more into that when the time comes, but for now, lets head over to part one of the Adroit and start training for today." she said while turning towards the course.
Karla lead us over to a nearby metal ladder leading up to a platform and I watched the trainees climb up one by one. Eventually it was just Lucy and me on the ground with Max. I let Lucy climb up first before me. Lucy slowly climbed up, and I had my foot on the ladder ready to climb up myself when I felt a hand on my shoulder.
I turned to see Max and I froze waiting to see what he wanted.
"Remember to lay low a little Dawn," Max quietly reminded me. "You have your final tests to do the best you can."
I nodded thankful for the reminder, and I slowly made my way up the ladder to the platform.
