Chapter 20 - His Soul Might Not Be Black Like His Name

Dawn's POV

I followed Kaiden into his office, feeling no better about the thought I previously had. I was actually really nervous about what he could possibly have to say to me.

Kaiden was standing by his big window, looking down at the people below him. He almost seemed deep in thought, so I stood in front of his desk silently waiting for him to start talking.

He sighed quietly before speaking. "Do you know why I needed to talk to you Dawn?" he said before turning around to face me. "Why I brought you up here?"

Thousands of thoughts raced through my head all at once. Because I did something wrong? I didn't do good enough in training earlier even though I was one of the fastest runners? I made him mad? Our little game we created broke some secret unspoken gang rule?

None of those thoughts that came to mind were pleasant, and I was desperately hoping that none of them were actually the real reason.

I realized he was staring at me, those piercing blue eyes watching and waiting. I figured I should give him a simple answer.

"No I have no Idea," I said quietly. I started to put my head down when I remembered what both Jake and Kaiden had said and I looked up to see that Kaiden had moved closer to me.

"Always keep your eye on the enemy" went through my mind as I pictured Jake and I in the alleyway the first night I met him.

"Look your leader in the eye," Kaiden's voice actually rang out. "I admire how fast you learn Dawn," He said as he walked over to the chair behind his desk and sat down. "It's not easy going from living a life not having to follow someone else's rules to having to follow a whole system of them."

"Thank you," I said quietly as my cheeks started to feel a little hot. Kaiden admired something about me? My leader? Somehow Kaiden almost didn't feel like my leader though.

Kaiden slowly sighed again and It was making me start to wonder if something was seriously wrong.

"Now I don't normally do this...." Kaiden started to say before he paused. He seemed to be thinking of the right words to say. "But I brought you up here so I could apologize."

Time seemed to slow down as I looked at him in shock. Apologize to me?

"Yes, yes I know," he said with a small chuckle. "The all mighty Mr. Black, as you put it earlier, is apologizing."

I chuckled a little at him reusing my words but then returned to all seriousness. "What are you even apologizing to me for?"

Kaiden sighed yet again as he stood up and walked over to the front of his desk and took a seat on the edge. "For how I acted earlier," He said with a little regret. "I was just..."

I put my hand up and cut him off. "Kaiden you don't have to apologize to me."

He raised a brow at me and stopped talking. I know it probably wasn't the smartest thing to do to one of the three most powerful men in Gainsville, but it almost didn't seem right for him to apologize.

"You're my leader and you don't have to justify your actions to me," I said causing him to look at me with surprise. "You can act however you want."

"Dawn that may be true but earlier I was just....." Kaiden started to say again.

"No, Kaiden you're the boss and the leader to this gang." I continued to rant at him to get him to stop. "You're my leader and i'm just a trainee. The lowest rank and I should be almost worthless...."

Kaiden quickly stood up and put his hands on my shoulders causing me to stop talking. I gazed up at him and into his blue eyes that happened to be staring right back at me.

"First off Dawn, never say that you're worthless to me because you aren't." Kaiden paused and closed his eyes for a moment before re-opening them. "And i'm not apologizing to you as your leader, i'm apologizing to you as just a person." An amused look flickered in his eye. "So will you let me just speak please? I've been trying to do this for the past few hours..."

He trailed off and I chuckled a bit at him. The past few hours huh? That was a little odd considering he probably had tons of other things to be doing. But I quietly nodded and let him speak.

Giving me a small smile, he removed his hands from my shoulders. "I just wanted to apologize to you for getting angry when we were talking earlier. And how I sort of stormed away without saying much." I paused to chuckle. "I was just mad at myself for letting something happen that I didn't want to happen."

I nodded at him before I laughed. "Let me guess, I'm not allowed to know because I'm still a trainee right?"

He smirked at me and crossed his arms. "I guess you could say that."

I smiled at him. "Well thank you for apologizing Kaiden the person, now will you please turn somewhat back into Kaiden the leader? This is a little odd for me, especially when I have to act so differently around other people," I asked him after I started to feel a little weird about the whole situation.

Kaiden started laughing, his deep voice reverberating around the room. "I think we just blew this up into more of an event than it should have been," he said thoughtfully.

I started laughing along with him. "Yeah I think we probably did." I agreed with him

We nodded at each other and I knew that all was well between us. An almost awkward silence fell between us as we stared at each other for awhile.

"So uh..... was that all you needed from me Kaiden? Or was there something else?" I asked curiously.

I saw him glance at the door before he walked back behind his desk and sat down on his chair again. He had a straight face with almost no emotion on it.

"No, you may return to your dorm now. I'm sure your friends are wondering what happened to you by now." He said coldly.

Confused as to where the Kaiden I was with a few seconds ago went I just nodded knowing not to stir anything up. I turned around to leave when I was surprised to see Jake standing in the doorway.

"I didn't mean to interrupt anything....." Jake said as he took a step backwards. "I can just come back later if..."

"No," Kaiden practically barked. "Dawn and I were finished discussing a few matters. She was just leaving."

Turning around I looked at Kaiden and saw he had the same emotionless face on. Quietly sighing I turned back to face Jake who was staring at me.

I smiled at him and pretended like I wasn't completely confused. "Yeah I was just leaving to head back to my dorm."

Jake nodded at me with a smile. "See you later then Dawn!" he happily said as he walked farther into the room towards Kaiden's desk. They dove right into conversation.

I started to walk back towards the door when I looked over my shoulder to take another glance at Kaiden. His eyes quickly flickered to mine before returning to Jake's. The look that he gave me..... something was weird about it and it made me curious.

Realizing I had probably stayed in the room too long, I quickly walked through the open door, shutting it behind me. I looked to my left and Corvo still wasn't standing there.

Feeling that was weird too, I walked down the hallway and out onto the metal platform in The Crater. I wanted to stay and lean on the railing but I figured it'd be odd considering they could watch me from Kaiden's office.

I quickly walked around to the stairs and climbed down them until I felt I wasn't directly visible from Kaiden's office. I stepped off the stairs and onto a platform that was only a few stories above the ground.

Shuffling a few feet away from the stairs I leaned my back against the wall and slid down the the ground. I didn't feel like going back to my dorm yet, or being questioned by Lucy, Parker and Xavier. I sighed and let my body relax, even putting my hands down on the platform.

The cold metal felt good on my hands. I looked up and could see that the sky was just starting to turn the flame colored orange that I loved. Sighing again I decided that I would stay out as long as I could so I could avoid questioning and think about things.

Why had Kaiden suddenly switched moods like that when he saw Jake in the room? Did Jake see something that Kaiden didn't want him to see? Maybe hear something?

I watched as a few people trickled up the stairs, not even noticing I was sitting there. Did something happen between Kaiden and Jake? I shook me head to that thought. When Kaiden seemed void of emotion, Jake seemed unaware of it and still pretty happy. I leaned my head against the side of the wall in wonder.

There was definitely something weird going on with the two of them.
